TALENT BEYOND LIMIT: Stacking Many Talents

The registered Root-testing hall looked far less impressive than its fee suggested. The three-story building stood on a busy commercial avenue between a private clinic and an office handling martial contracts. Pale stone covered the lower floor, broad windows admitted the morning light, and a row of official seals beside the entrance indicated that certificates issued here were recognized throughout Ashbourne State.

Inside, however, there was little ceremony. Clerks worked behind long counters while families waited on wooden benches, many with children young enough that their feet did not reach the floor.

Edwin accompanied Joe through registration. The clerk checked his identification and began filling out the assessment form.

”Age?”

”Eighteen.”

”First registered Spiritual Root assessment?”

”Yes.”

The clerk asked about any known birth phenomenon, previous informal tests, and Joe’s place of origin. Green Hollow meant nothing to him until Joe mentioned Blackwood, at which point the man merely nodded, collected the gold fee, and passed over a numbered token.

Nothing about the process suggested that the question being answered could determine the course of someone’s life. Joe waited less than half an hour. When his number was called, Edwin remained in the public hall while an attendant led Joe into a smaller assessment room. A table and recording instrument occupied one wall. In the center stood a translucent stone sphere mounted on a waist-high pedestal.

Joe sensed it before reaching the pedestal. The sensation was faint, but after Greyspine he recognized it immediately as something separate from Blood Energy. The six spirit stones had felt denser and less controlled. Whatever energy rested within the testing sphere seemed weaker but deliberately contained.

The examiner reviewed Joe’s form. ”You have never cultivated qi?”

”No.”

”Have you deliberately attempted to draw external spiritual energy into your body?”

”No.”

”Good. Place your palm flat against the sphere and don’t circulate Blood Energy into it. The instrument will do the rest.”

Joe rested his hand against the cool surface. Nothing happened at first. Then the energy within the sphere moved.

For the first time, Joe could feel spiritual energy interacting directly with his body rather than simply existing nearby. He still could not explain the sensation, but the distinction from Blood Energy was unmistakable.

A thin line of light appeared inside the sphere. A second followed, then a third, a fourth, and a fifth. The examiner waited a few breaths longer before making a notation. No additional light appeared.

”That’s enough.”

Joe removed his hand, and the lights slowly faded.

The examiner returned to his desk. ”Spiritual Root confirmed. Five attributes.”

Joe looked once more at the now-clear sphere. Five Attributes was not an exceptional result, but the most important part of the assessment had already been settled. He possessed a Spiritual Root.

The examiner seemed to expect a stronger reaction. ”Are you currently following the martial path?”

”Yes.”

”Then there’s something you should understand before deciding what to do next. Beginning true qi cultivation permanently closes the possibility of Root Kindling. The opportunity also ends with age, whether you’ve begun cultivating qi or not. At eighteen, you still have time to consider both paths.”

”I understand.”

The examiner stamped the certificate and passed it across the table. Joe read the result once. Joe Vale. Age: 18. Five-Attribute Spiritual Root.

The assessment had cost one gold, but the document would be useful far beyond this room. More importantly, the question that had followed him from Blackwood was finally answered.

He thanked the examiner and returned to the public hall.

Edwin read the certificate while they walked outside. ”Five Attributes.”

”Yes.”

”You seem to be taking that well.”

Joe accepted the certificate when Edwin handed it back. ”Yesterday I didn’t know whether I had a Root at all. This is better than none.”

”True.” Edwin waited until they had cleared the entrance. ”Does the result change your plan?”

”Not immediately. I still intend to remain on the martial path for now.”

”Because of Kindling.”

Joe nodded.

”Then your real problem hasn’t changed either. You need enough resources to make staying martial worthwhile.”

”Exactly.”

They stopped for breakfast at a restaurant several streets away. The morning crowd filled most of the tables, and their food took long enough to arrive that Edwin waited until they were eating before returning to the subject.

”You were deliberately vague yesterday about what level of resources you’re looking for. If I’m going to introduce you to people who supply established martial families, I need to know what I’m actually asking them to consider.”

That was reasonable.

”I already have a method that takes me through Internal Organs.”

Edwin’s attention settled fully on him. ”Where did you obtain it?”

”I’m not ready to discuss that.”

Joe expected resistance, but Edwin only studied him for several seconds before accepting the boundary.

”All right. If you already have the method, tell me what you need.”

”Medicine appropriate for Internal Organ cultivation, concentrated nutrition, reliable physicians or martial experts who understand the strain involved, and access to materials that aren’t normally sold to inexperienced practitioners.”

Edwin’s expression became more serious. ”Ordinary Internal Organ cultivation?”

Joe shook his head. ”Repeated tempering.”

That changed the conversation.

Edwin set down his chopsticks. ”How far have you repeated the earlier layers?”

Joe had already decided how much he was willing to reveal.

”Far enough that the foundation won’t be the limiting factor if I attempt the third Internal Organ tempering.”

Edwin remained quiet. Anyone familiar with the requirements for Acquired would understand the implication.

”Skin, Muscle, and Bone?” Edwin asked.

”Yes.”

”At least twice each?”

Joe neither confirmed nor denied an exact number. ”Enough to satisfy the requirement.”

Edwin leaned back and regarded him more carefully than before. Joe’s registered cultivation still said Muscle Completion. Edwin had known for years that the official figure was unlikely to tell the whole story, but this gave him a much clearer sense of the difference.

”Can you demonstrate it?”

”Enough for a qualified examiner to confirm the minimum I’m claiming.”

Joe had no intention of allowing anyone to determine the full depth of his foundation. He did not need to. A controlled assessment only had to establish that Skin, Muscle, and Bone had each been tempered beyond the ordinary single-pass path.

That would be unusual enough at eighteen and give Edwin something credible to take to his contact.

”If you can prove that much,” Edwin said, ”people will take the resource request differently.”

”That’s why I’m willing to show it.”

In Blackwood, revealing unusual progress would mostly have created questions, attention, and pressure. Ashbourne was different. Here, carefully chosen attention could provide access to things Joe actually needed.

Edwin considered him for another moment before returning to his breakfast. ”Then I know what to tell my contact.”

After the meal, Edwin drove them to the medical consortium where he worked. Joe had passed large medicinal businesses the previous day, but the consortium operated on another scale entirely. Several buildings occupied the compound, with processing facilities toward the front and warehouses covering much of the rear property. Animal carts shared loading areas with small trucks, while workers moved sealed containers between buildings under the supervision of clerks checking destinations and batch numbers.

The air carried the familiar scents of herbs, alcohol, oils, and processed medicine, but in quantities that reminded Joe of Edwin’s old Blackwood workshop multiplied many times over. Near one loading area, crates were marked according to martial use. Some contained ordinary Skin-stage support medicines. Others were labeled for concentrated Muscle recovery. Smaller containers farther inside were handled with noticeably greater care and recorded individually rather than by crate.

”Higher-stage medicines?” Joe asked.

Edwin followed his gaze. ”Mostly Bone and above. Those are the products that start becoming expensive enough for people to track individually.”

”Internal Organ preparations too?”

”Some of them.”

That was the part of Ashbourne Joe had come to find. His inheritance told him what the body needed to do. The city could provide the materials required to survive doing it.

Edwin had work to finish, so Joe spent several hours observing the processing floor with permission to watch but not interfere. The operation was more sophisticated than anything available in Blackwood. Extracts were filtered and concentrated before being measured into standardized containers. Mechanical presses produced tablets with consistent weight. Finished tonics were inspected by batch, while nutritional concentrates combined ordinary food-derived material with medicinal components dense enough to support much heavier martial training than ordinary meals could sustain.

The spirit stones in Edwin’s guest room returned to Joe’s thoughts. He had already dismissed direct absorption as something he did not understand well enough to attempt. Watching medicinal processing suggested a different question. Medicine routinely altered substances to make them easier for the body to use. Extracts concentrated useful components while removing unwanted material. Other preparations diluted ingredients that would be harmful at full strength.

If spiritual energy could not be tolerated directly by a martial body, perhaps the important question was not whether it could be absorbed unchanged. Perhaps it could be transformed first, degraded, diluted, or incorporated into something the body could tolerate. Joe had no evidence that such a process would work, and using spirit stones for experiments without understanding their value would be wasteful. He had six stones. There was no reason to sacrifice one until he knew considerably more.

Near the end of the workday, Edwin found him reading the label on a Bone-stage nutritional concentrate.

”I sent the message.”

”To your contact?”

Edwin nodded. ”I told him the Root result and enough about your martial foundation to get his attention.”

”What did you tell him?”

”That you’re eighteen, formally registered with a Five-Attribute Root, and claiming a lower-body foundation capable of supporting the Acquired path.”

That was more useful than simply describing him as a rural Muscle Completion practitioner.

”Did he believe you?”

”Not immediately. Once I told him you’re willing to undergo an assessment, he agreed to come by tonight.”

That was all Joe needed. They returned to Edwin’s house after work. The visitor arrived after sunset. He was well dressed without displaying the kind of wealth visible elsewhere in the East District, and his manner suggested that he was accustomed to moving comfortably among people of greater status than himself.

Edwin received him in the sitting room and poured drinks before making the introduction.

The man’s attention remained on Joe. ”Edwin tells me you’re eighteen.”

”Yes.”

”And you tested this morning with Five Attributes.”

Joe handed him the registered certificate.

The man read it carefully before returning it. ”Your formal martial record says Muscle Completion.”

”It does.”

”But Edwin says you’re claiming a foundation prepared for the Acquired path.”

”I said my earlier layers are sufficiently tempered to support the required Internal Organ progression.”

The distinction caught his interest.

”What exactly are you claiming?”

”Skin, Muscle, and Bone have each undergone repeated tempering. I’m willing to demonstrate enough for a qualified examiner to confirm at least the foundation required before attempting the third Internal Organ refinement.”

The man stopped turning his glass between his fingers. ”At eighteen?”

”Yes.”

His skepticism did not disappear, but it became focused rather than dismissive.

”Do you already possess the Internal Organ method?”

”I have a method sufficient for my cultivation.”

”Where did it come from?”

”That’s private.”

The answer did not please him, but Joe had expected that. After a moment, the man moved to the question that mattered more.

”If you already have the cultivation method, what do you want from my wife’s family?”

”Access. I need medicines and high-density nutrition suitable for repeated Internal Organ tempering, experienced supervision when the risk justifies it, and a reliable route to materials that ordinary shops don’t keep available. I’m not asking the family to give me its inheritance.”

That eased one obvious concern.

”If the assessment confirms what I’m claiming,” Joe continued, ”I’d also prefer to establish a legitimate relationship rather than purchase everything anonymously through unrelated merchants. I’m new to Ashbourne. Your family already has suppliers, physicians, and people who know which resources are worth buying.”

The man considered that much more seriously. ”You understand that those resources aren’t free.”

”I expect to pay.”

”Money helps. It doesn’t guarantee access to everything.”

”I understand that too.”

That was apparently the correct answer. The man leaned back and looked toward Edwin before returning his attention to Joe. His position suddenly made more sense. As someone who had married into an established family, he lived close enough to its resources to understand their value, but not so securely within the lineage that bringing something useful to the family would be meaningless.

If Joe’s foundation was real, the introduction would benefit him as well.

”What exactly would you be willing to show during an assessment?”

”Enough to prove that Edwin did not waste your time.”

The man studied him, then set down his glass.

”I can arrange a private assessment tomorrow evening. It won’t be with the main line. If the result is ordinary, the matter ends there. If they confirm repeated tempering through Bone at your age, then someone above me can decide whether the family has any reason to continue the conversation.”

That suited Joe. He was not looking for immediate acceptance into an established Ashbourne family. He needed a first door to open.

”I’ll be there.”

The man stood to leave, then hesitated. ”One piece of advice. If I bring you in claiming that foundation, don’t conceal so much during the examination that they conclude I exaggerated.”

”I’ll show enough for them to verify exactly what you’ve been told.”

That seemed to satisfy him. After Edwin escorted the visitor to the door, Joe remained in the sitting room. The Root test had confirmed that immortal cultivation was available to him. The rest of the day had clarified something more immediate: Ashbourne possessed the resources Blackwood lacked, but the best of them moved through relationships rather than storefronts.

Joe did not need to reveal everything about himself to enter that network. He only needed to reveal enough to make access worthwhile. Tomorrow’s assessment would test whether that balance could be maintained.
