TALENT BEYOND LIMIT: Stacking Many Talents

Edwin’s friend arrived shortly after breakfast looking considerably more formal than he had the night before. The relaxed clothes he usually wore at Edwin’s house had been replaced by a fitted dark coat, and even his hair had received more attention than usual. Whatever standing he possessed through his wife’s family, he clearly intended to present Joe properly when they arrived.

”We should leave soon.”

Joe finished his tea and collected the registered Root certificate from the table. ”Your wife agreed to the assessment?”

”She agreed to meet you. What happens after that depends on what you can actually show.”

That was reasonable. Joe had no intention of asking anyone to take Edwin’s word for his foundation. They left the house and travelled farther into the East District than Joe had yet gone. Edwin’s neighborhood had been prosperous without separating itself completely from commerce. Physicians, merchants, offices, and workshops still shared the surrounding streets. Farther east, the properties widened until high walls enclosed grounds large enough to contain several buildings.

The compound they entered was not extravagant. It was simply substantial. A two-story residence faced the main courtyard, but much of the property behind it was devoted to business. Two long workshop buildings stood beside a medicinal storehouse and several covered loading bays. A training yard occupied one corner of the grounds, partly screened from the commercial section by a low wall.

Workers crossed the courtyard carrying sealed crates bearing apothecary marks. A small truck waited near one loading area while an animal-drawn wagon stood behind it for its turn.

”What does the family produce here?” Joe asked.

”Mostly medicinal goods and concentrated foods. Some physician supplies as well.” Edwin’s friend glanced toward the workshops. ”There are other businesses now, but this was what the family built itself on.”

That explained why he had thought of them when Joe asked about martial resources. Their connection to the Montclairs had come later. Edwin had already given Joe the abbreviated history. A woman from this family had once saved an injured collateral Montclair descendant. The relationship that followed eventually became marriage. Because the man was distant enough from the ruling line to carry little political importance while still possessing the Montclair name, the marriage had not transformed the woman’s family into nobility.

What it had provided was access: better introductions, stronger credit, protected suppliers, favorable contracts, and occasional assistance when a commercial problem reached beyond what an ordinary Ashbourne family could handle. Over decades, those advantages had accumulated into the compound Joe now walked through.

Connections rarely created wealth by themselves. They changed which opportunities became available. The woman receiving them was working when they entered. Three ledgers lay open across a side table, and an assistant stood nearby while she checked a column of figures. Joe and her husband waited until she finished the line she was reading and made a correction in the margin.

Only then did she look up. ”Joe Vale?”

”Yes.”

Her husband indicated a chair, and Joe sat opposite her.

”I was told you completed a registered Root assessment yesterday.”

Joe handed over the certificate.

She checked the official seal before reading the result. ”Five Attributes. Eighteen years old.”

”Correct.”

Her attention moved to the martial information Edwin’s friend had provided beforehand. ”Your registered cultivation is still Muscle Completion.”

”It hasn’t been updated.”

”What would an accurate public assessment show now?”

”Bone Completion.”

That earned more attention than the Root certificate had.

She set the paper down. ”And the repeated foundation my husband mentioned?”

”Second refinement completed through Skin, Muscle, and Bone.”

Her husband glanced toward him, though the woman continued watching Joe.

”You’re familiar with why that matters?”

”It leaves the lower foundation required for a third Internal Organ refinement. If the later stages are completed properly, that keeps the Acquired path open.”

She considered him for several seconds before turning to the assistant. ”Ask Uncle to meet us in the training yard.”

The assistant left without comment. That was the entire reaction. Joe preferred it. No declaration of talent was useful until someone had confirmed what he claimed.

The older man who joined them in the training yard appeared to have been interrupted from other work. He asked only what needed to be examined and showed no interest in Joe’s background.

The equipment was better than anything Joe had used in Blackwood. An articulated testing frame occupied one side of the yard, built to apply resistance from several directions rather than measuring simple force alone. Adjustable supports could be shifted along the limbs and torso, allowing the examiner to watch how the body distributed stress under changing loads.

Joe spent a moment studying the mechanism before stepping into position. The difficulty was not producing enough strength. It was deciding exactly how much of his body to reveal. Years of refinement had changed far more than the amount of force he could generate. His balance, recovery, structural alignment, and control had all improved alongside raw strength. Displaying only a second refinement therefore required more than simply holding back.

Joe allowed enough inefficiency into his movements to resemble an exceptionally well-developed young Bone practitioner rather than someone whose body had undergone nine complete refinements. The examiner began with Skin, then Muscle, then Bone. Pressure increased gradually. Resistance shifted across different angles while the older man checked the body’s response, occasionally repeating a measurement when something interested him.

Joe gave him precisely the foundation he intended to show. Two complete temperings of Skin. Two of Muscle. Two of Bone.

Nothing beyond that.

The examiner eventually stepped back from the apparatus. ”The repeated foundation is genuine.”

The woman had remained beneath the covered edge of the yard. ”Second refinement through all three?”

”Complete.”

”And Bone?”

”Completion.”

That was enough for her. The older examiner returned to his previous work, and the others went back inside. This time the woman left the ledgers closed.

”Bone Completion at eighteen, Five-Attribute Root, and a verified second refinement through the lower three layers. That’s a good foundation.” She regarded Joe for a moment. ”It also isn’t unique.”

Joe had not expected it to be.

”Our family is already supporting someone younger than twenty with a similar martial foundation. Four-Attribute Root. She entered Internal Organs recently after completing the same minimum repeated foundation below.”

That comparison was useful. Joe now had a better idea of what an established Ashbourne family considered a strong young prospect. His public profile was competitive with such people without being so extraordinary that it demanded an explanation.

The woman seemed to be watching for his reaction.

”Is she being prepared for Acquired?” Joe asked.

”Eventually, if her progress continues. Internal Organs still has to be completed properly, and the third refinement is not something we assume simply because the lower foundation exists.”

Joe agreed. A viable road was not the same as reaching its end.

”Your Five-Attribute Root lowers your value compared with someone equally talented who possesses a stronger Root,” she continued. ”But your age and martial foundation still make you worth considering. At minimum, you have a plausible route toward Acquired.”

That mattered far more than praise.

”What kind of consideration?”

”That depends on what you’re looking for. My husband said your immediate interest is cultivation support rather than another inheritance.”

”Correct. I already have a method.”

She did not ask where it came from. ”What resources?”

”Internal Organ medicines, concentrated nutrition, access to reliable physicians, and eventually materials appropriate for repeated refinement. I’m not expecting the family to provide those for nothing.”

”Those things can be arranged if there is enough reason to arrange them. Some you would buy normally through our businesses. Scarcer materials are different.”

”Because supply is limited?”

”Supply, relationships, and priority. A family does not give its best medicines to every customer simply because he can pay.”

That matched everything Joe had learned since arriving in Ashbourne.

”Your foundation is enough that I would be comfortable introducing you to the same channels we use for promising younger practitioners,” the woman said. ”Whether you receive preferential access later would depend on progress and whatever agreement you make with us.”

”What kind of agreement?”

”None is required for ordinary purchases. If the family begins subsidizing rare resources, providing private physicians, or spending political capital on your behalf, then we would discuss terms.”

Paying market price for resources did not bind him. Serious family investment might. That was manageable. Joe was about to ask which resources could be purchased immediately when the woman shifted the conversation.

”There may also be another opportunity.”

Her husband had been waiting for that subject. Joe could tell from the slight change in his posture. The woman opened one of the ledgers and removed a folded notice tucked beneath it. The Montclair crest appeared at the top.

”We were already preparing a recommendation for the next Decennial candidate pool.”

”For the Four-Attribute practitioner?”

”Yes.”

”Through the Montclairs?”

”Our connection is distant, but sufficient for preliminary recommendations.”

She unfolded the notice on the table without passing it to him.

”The previous Decennial produced poor results for Ashbourne. The State Prince expanded the early search this cycle. Affiliated households have been encouraged to submit more viable rooted martial practitioners for preliminary review.”

Joe understood the distinction. ”More names are being considered, but that doesn’t mean more people receive serious support.”

”Exactly.”

The Montclairs were widening the search, not lowering the final standard. More candidates could enter the early stages, allowing the state to examine a broader pool before deciding who justified meaningful resources.

”Does your family gain anything if someone you recommend advances?”

”Of course. Successful recommendations strengthen the household’s standing with the branch handling the program. They can improve future allocations, introductions, and commercial relationships. How much depends on how far the candidate goes.”

Joe glanced toward her husband. Now the man’s interest made complete sense. He had not brought Joe here purely because Edwin had asked. If Joe proved useful, everyone involved gained something.

That was safer than charity.

The woman followed his glance. ”My husband normally brings commercial opportunities into this room. This is the first martial prospect he’s brought me.”

Her husband remained quiet, which told Joe the introduction carried some personal significance for him as well.

”Your Five-Attribute Root is ordinary by the standards of serious rooted families,” she continued, ”but the rest of the profile is sufficient for preliminary consideration. Bone Completion at eighteen with a verified repeated lower foundation gives the Montclairs something worth examining.”

”Would your existing candidate and I be competing for one recommendation?”

”No. We aren’t given a single seat. Our Four-Attribute candidate remains the stronger recommendation. Adding your name does not remove hers. The Montclairs decide later how many people they wish to examine or support.”

The family lost little by sending another credible prospect and gained another chance to benefit if that prospect performed well.

”What obligation would the referral create for me?”

”None by itself.”

”And if the Montclairs offer support?”

”That would depend on their terms. You would be free to accept or refuse.”

”What does your family expect if I accept the referral?”

”Nothing beyond accurately representing what we’ve verified. If we invest additional resources in you afterward, that would be a separate agreement.”

Clean enough.

”Then I’m interested.”

The woman did not reach for paperwork immediately. ”Before we submit anything, we need to confirm you aren’t already bound to another family or organization. No exclusive service agreement?”

”No.”

”No martial inheritance contract requiring future service?”

”No.”

”No marriage arrangement or household sponsorship that gives another party rights over your cultivation?”

”None.”

That was all she needed. Joe had received help from several people over the years, but none possessed contractual claims over his future.

”Then we’ll add your assessment to the next recommendation batch.”

Joe had expected more questions. Apparently his expression showed it.

”What is it?”

”I expected you to ask where I trained.”

”Why?”

”Bone Completion at eighteen with repeated tempering isn’t common.”

”No, but you’ve demonstrated it. That’s what I’m recommending.”

Her answer was simple enough that Joe realized he had been expecting complications that did not yet belong at this level. She was not deciding whether the Montclairs should invest heavily in him. She was deciding whether his current cultivation was credible enough that attaching her family’s name to a preliminary recommendation would be reasonable.

”If Montclair wants to investigate your teachers, finances, childhood, or how you built the foundation,” she continued, ”they have people for that. I don’t.”

That settled the matter. The paperwork was prepared before noon. The family’s existing candidate occupied the first entry. Her record was considerably more detailed than Joe’s, with her Root classification, age, current realm, repeated foundation, physician, training supervisor, and existing resource allocation already documented. Her cultivation had clearly been managed for years.

Joe’s entry was shorter. Joe Vale. Age eighteen. Five-Attribute Spiritual Root. Bone Completion. Second refinement of Skin, Muscle, and Bone verified by household examiner. Lower foundation suitable for continued Acquired-path development. Below that came his current address, contact information, and the name of Edwin’s friend as the introducer. Nothing about Green Hollow was required. Nothing about his childhood training, the Black family, Theodere, or when he had formally discovered his Root appeared on the recommendation.

Those details had no relevance to the household’s immediate purpose. They were certifying what they had personally verified. The clerk placed Joe’s assessment with several recommendations waiting for delivery. There was no ceremony attached to it. A family with a distant Montclair connection had been asked to identify viable young rooted martial practitioners. They already had one strong prospect under their care and had now encountered another worth forwarding.

Joe’s name disappeared into the stack with the rest. For the moment, that was enough. He had come to Ashbourne looking for resources. Within days, carefully revealing only a small portion of what he could actually do had already opened a path toward them.
