Rebirth: The Courtyard Bride Is Cool and Radiant

Chapter 943: Chapter 945: You Are Absolutely Right

Yunyi asked Sister-in-law Lü to find a basin, add fresh water, and soak the chopped salted fish in it. To help draw out the salty flavor, she added a pinch of salt to the water.

After that, the two began chatting as they wrapped dumplings.

Sister-in-law Lü was responsible for rolling the dough, while Yunyi was in charge of filling them.

Yunyi placed the finished dumplings on a nearby tray: ”Sister-in-law, I’m new here, and I don’t really know much about the situation in the family compound. Why don’t you share some of your experience?”

Sister-in-law Lü liked Yunyi’s straightforward nature; she wasn’t the pretentious type: ”Our family compound is quite large, you know. Our section is all composed of camp-level, deputy regiment level, and regiment level personnel, and the housing structure is the same for all of us.

Over there, it’s occupied by company-level and platoon-level personnel, and their houses are one room less than ours, but otherwise the same.

The newly built apartments on the west side are in quite a mess; there are some with three rooms, some with two, and some with just one, and they’re allocated based on rank.

Actually, in my opinion, living in an apartment might be cleaner, but it’s not as comfortable as living in this compound, at least the space is more generous.”

After saying that, she looked up and asked: ”As you applied for housing later on, why did you also choose a single-story house?”

Yunyi smiled and said: ”I’m like you; I prefer the spaciousness of single-story houses. Besides, nowadays the apartments don’t have good soundproofing; to be blunt, you can even hear a sneeze from next door. There’s absolutely no privacy.”

Sister-in-law Lü didn’t expect Yunyi to say that and laughed outright: ”You’re absolutely right, sister.

Initially, I also thought about moving into an apartment, but I couldn’t bear to leave the compound, afraid that there wouldn’t be a place to keep the chickens we have at home. Looking back now, I’m glad I didn’t apply to move; otherwise I’d probably regret it terribly.

Previously, it was Deputy Regimental Commander Zhang from the Second Group who lived in the backyard. I got along well with Sister-in-law Shi from Deputy Regimental Commander Zhang’s family; she was among the first to apply for a housing change. She later told me that we were wise not to apply for a housing change, as her next-door neighbors often quarreled or fought every few days, which was a real nuisance to them.

The military did try to mediate, but after a few days, it was back to the same old, which was really frustrating for them.”

Upon hearing this, Yunyi asked: ”Jingrui mentioned there were still vacant houses in this compound. If they’re bothered by the noise, why don’t they apply to move back here?”

Sister-in-law Lü sighed: ”She wanted to, but Deputy Regimental Commander Zhang didn’t agree, saying this isn’t a vegetable market. They just moved into an apartment not long ago and now want to move back to a single-story house; it wouldn’t look good to the leaders.

So she can only endure it for now.”

It’s true, if everyone frequently applied for housing changes like this, it would cause chaos.

Then, the conversation shifted to Commander Gong’s family from the Fourth Group: ”Sister-in-law, Commander Gong’s wife has given birth a few days ago, what’s up with her family?”

Sister-in-law Lü sighed: ”Commander Gong’s wife, Chen Lili, is really unlucky. Not only was she accidentally bumped by Commander Qiao’s son and had a premature delivery, but her in-laws said that her young brother-in-law is getting engaged soon, so they can’t come for now.

As for her family, her eldest sister-in-law’s mother is ill and in the hospital, and there’s no one to look after the children, so Commander Gong’s mother-in-law is at home watching the grandchildren. Everything just happened at once.

A few military wives that we’re quite good with talked it over and decided to take turns looking after her, one day at a time, until everyone has had their turn. By then, her in-laws will hopefully be able to come.”

Speaking of this, Sister-in-law Lü felt heartfelt: ”Being a military wife isn’t easy, and even more so for those who accompany their husbands on assignments. It’s not uncommon to go months without seeing them, let alone the families who haven’t followed them, sometimes years go by without seeing their men.”
