”Don’t answer him.”

Sasha’s shadow whispered the words again.

This time, everyone heard it.

Aurelia froze.

Alina’s fingers tightened around her sleeve.

Lyra slowly turned toward the floor, her expression losing its usual certainty.

Even Evelyn stepped away from the shadow.

But Sasha didn’t move.

She simply stared at the dark shape beneath her feet.

”...You’re becoming louder,” she whispered.

The shadow tilted its head.

It had Sasha’s silhouette.

Her posture.

Her voice.

But not her eyes.

Those were two empty wounds in the darkness.

Dillan stepped forward.

”Sasha.”

Her head snapped toward him.

”Don’t.”

The word came from her mouth.

The shadow repeated it a heartbeat later.

”Don’t.”

Two voices.

One body.

One fear.

The System flickered before Dillan’s eyes.

DIVERGENT EMOTIONAL SIGNATURE DETECTED.SUBJECT: SASHA RUREN.PRIMARY CONSCIOUSNESS: ACTIVE.SECONDARY RESONANCE: UNAUTHORIZED.WARNING: RESONANCE ATTEMPTING TO ASSUME AGENCY.

Dillan’s stomach tightened.

”Is that another fragment?”

Sasha shook her head.

”No.”

Her shadow smiled.

”Yes.”

Sasha’s expression cracked.

”Stop.”

The shadow raised its hand.

Sasha’s hand rose with it.

But the movement was wrong.

Too slow.

Too deliberate.

Like something learning how to control a puppet.

Dillan reached for her wrist.

The shadow lunged first.

Black fingers stretched across the floor, wrapping around his ankle.

Cold flooded through him.

A memory forced itself into his mind.

Sasha standing inside the Preservation Core.

Alone.

Surrounded by endless white light.

Her hands pressed against the glass separating her from Dillan.

He could see her mouth moving.

But no sound escaped.

Then a message appeared.

CHOICE SIMULATION INITIATED.POSSIBILITY ONE: RETURN TO DILLAN.POSSIBILITY TWO: REMAIN PRESERVED.POSSIBILITY THREE: BE FORGOTTEN.

Sasha stared at the options.

Her fingers trembled.

Then she smiled.

Not happily.

Not peacefully.

Like someone trying to make pain look harmless.

”I choose none of them.”

The memory shattered.

Dillan dropped to one knee.

Sasha grabbed his shoulder.

”Dillan!”

Her shadow twisted violently.

A shriek echoed through the chamber.

Not from Sasha.

From somewhere beneath her.

CHOICE REJECTED.SUBJECT MUST SELECT AN ACCEPTABLE OUTCOME.

Dillan lifted his head.

The System had changed.

Its familiar blue text had turned crimson.

IF SASHA CHOOSES FREELY, DILLAN RUREN MAY LOSE HER.IF DILLAN REFUSES OWNERSHIP, SASHA MAY DISAPPEAR.IF SASHA REMAINS, HER AGENCY WILL CONTINUE TO DETERIORATE.

The shadow leaned toward him.

”See?”

Its voice was soft now.

Almost gentle.

”She’ll leave you.”

Sasha’s eyes widened.

”Don’t listen to it.”

”She’ll choose a world where you aren’t needed.”

”Dillan, please.”

”She’ll discover that she can live without you.”

Sasha’s breathing became uneven.

The shadow pressed closer to her body.

”And when she does...”

Its empty eyes focused on Dillan.

”...what will you have left?”

Silence settled over the chamber.

Dillan looked at Sasha.

Not the shadow.

Not the System.

Her.

She was afraid.

Not of disappearing.

Not of being forgotten.

She was afraid of his answer.

Afraid that if he promised to keep her, he would become another cage.

Afraid that if he allowed her to leave, she would discover that her love had never been enough.

Dillan slowly stood.

”Sasha.”

She swallowed.

”Don’t say it.”

”I’m not going to tell you to stay.”

The shadow twitched.

”I’m not going to promise that you’ll never leave.”

Sasha’s eyes glistened.

”And I’m not going to make your choice for you.”

The chamber trembled.

The crimson System text began to distort.

RESPONSE INVALID.HOST MUST CLAIM OR RELEASE SUBJECT.

Dillan looked directly at the notification.

”No.”

The word carried through the chamber.

”I don’t own her.”

The shadow recoiled.

Dillan continued.

”And I won’t release her like she’s something I have the right to possess first.”

Sasha’s lips parted.

”Dillan...”

”You can choose me.”

He stepped closer.

”Or you can choose a life without me.”

The shadow began to fracture.

”But whichever answer you give...”

Dillan reached toward her.

This time, the shadow did not move.

”...I’ll remember that it was yours.”

Sasha stared at him.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then her eyes lowered.

A tear fell.

Not from sadness alone.

From relief.

The shadow screamed.

Its fingers dug into the floor as black veins spread across the chamber.

AGENCY RESTORATION DETECTED.OWNERSHIP IMPULSE: DECLINING.SECONDARY RESONANCE: COLLAPSING.WARNING.THE RESONANCE IS NOT SASHA’S SHADOW.

Dillan’s expression changed.

The shadow stopped screaming.

It began laughing.

Slowly.

Quietly.

Like it had been waiting for the System to reveal the truth.

Sasha looked down.

Her shadow was no longer shaped like her.

It had grown taller.

Thinner.

Its head bent at an impossible angle.

And behind it, another shadow appeared.

A child.

Small.

Barefoot.

Holding a broken piece of white chalk.

Dillan’s blood turned cold.

The child raised its face.

There were no eyes.

Only a stitched-shut mouth.

Then it wrote across the floor.

One letter at a time.

S H E W A S N E V E R T H E O N E W H O C H O S E.

Sasha staggered backward.

”No...”

The System flashed violently.

DEEPER MEMORY BREACH DETECTED.SUBJECT: SASHA RUREN.ORIGINAL SECOND CHOICE: AUTHENTIC.CURRENT MEMORY OF CHOICE: ALTERED.ALTERATION SOURCE: UNKNOWN.

Dillan turned toward Sasha.

”Altered?”

She was shaking.

”I told you the truth.”

”I know.”

”I chose you.”

”I know.”

”Then why is it saying—”

The stitched-mouth child lifted the chalk.

And wrote one final sentence.

SASHA CHOSE TO SAVE YOU.

The chamber lights died.

A voice emerged from behind the sealed seventh door.

A voice that sounded exactly like Dillan.

”But who chose what she had to become?”

Sasha’s shadow opened its mouth.

This time, the voice that came out belonged to someone else.

”Ask the girl who taught her how to love.”

The seventh door began to open.

And somewhere in the darkness...

Celia started screaming.

Celia’s scream tore through the chamber.

It wasn’t loud.

It was worse than loud.

It sounded like someone screaming from the bottom of a memory that had been buried alive.

The seventh door opened another inch.

Blackness seeped through the gap.

Sasha immediately stepped in front of Dillan.

”No.”

Her voice trembled.

”Don’t let her come out.”

Dillan stared at her.

”You know what’s behind that door?”

Sasha shook her head.

But her shadow answered.

”Of course she does.”

The chamber floor split.

A thin line of crimson light crawled toward the seventh door, illuminating fragments of writing carved into the stone.

Names.

Promises.

Regrets.

And beneath them all, a single sentence:

LOVE MUST BE TAUGHT BEFORE IT CAN BE CONTROLLED.

Lyra took a step back.

”That’s not a memory.”

Aurelia’s eyes narrowed.

”No. It’s a doctrine.”

The seventh door opened fully.

Celia stood on the other side.

Her white dress was stained with black liquid. Her hair hung over her face, and both hands were pressed against her throat.

Something invisible was strangling her.

”Dillan...”

Her voice barely escaped.

”Don’t let her teach you again.”

Sasha’s body went rigid.

The shadow behind her smiled.

”Too late.”

Dillan crossed the threshold.

The moment his foot touched the other side, the chamber vanished.

He was standing beneath the old oak tree.

The sky was pale.

The grass was wet.

And he was four years old again.

Small hands.

Bare feet.

A heart too young to understand why loneliness could hurt so much.

A little girl stood beneath the tree.

The One Who Stays.

No.

Evelyn.

No.

A name he had forgotten before he could properly give it.

She watched him with wide eyes.

”You came back.”

Young Dillan smiled.

”I promised.”

Behind him, another child appeared.

Sasha.

She was younger, smaller, and holding a red ribbon.

Celia stood several steps away.

Her face was calm.

Too calm.

She knelt before Sasha and gently adjusted the ribbon around her wrist.

”What do you think love means?” Celia asked.

Young Sasha looked toward Dillan.

”It means staying with someone.”

Celia smiled.

”And if they leave?”

Sasha’s fingers tightened around the ribbon.

”Then I’ll follow.”

”And if they forget you?”

Sasha looked frightened.

Celia leaned closer.

”Then you must become something they cannot forget.”

Dillan’s stomach twisted.

The memory shifted.

Sasha was older now.

Standing alone beside the oak tree.

Celia’s voice echoed around her.

”Love means becoming indispensable.”

Sasha pressed her hand against her chest.

”What if he doesn’t need me?”

”Then give him a reason.”

”What if he chooses someone else?”

”Then become the choice he cannot escape.”

The scene flickered.

Sasha stood inside the Preservation Core.

Her face was wet with tears.

Her hands were pressed against the glass.

Dillan was on the other side.

Unconscious.

Dying.

Celia stood behind Sasha.

”You know what must happen.”

Sasha looked back.

”No.”

”You can save him.”

”But he won’t remember everything.”

”He’ll live.”

Sasha’s eyes closed.

”And if he remembers me?”

Celia said nothing.

Sasha lowered her head.

”If he remembers me completely, he’ll destroy himself trying to save me.”

A pause.

Then Sasha whispered:

”Then I’ll make myself necessary.”

Dillan’s chest tightened.

The memory fractured again.

Sasha stood before the Core’s central mechanism.

A blade of white light pierced through her chest.

Her expression was peaceful.

But her voice was not.

”If I return...”

She looked at Dillan.

”I won’t ask him to love me.”

The words echoed.

”I’ll ask him to choose me.”

Then Celia reached toward the mechanism.

And changed one line.

A single line.

So small that it almost disappeared beneath the light.

EMOTIONAL DEPENDENCY: REQUIRED.

Dillan’s eyes widened.

”No...”

Celia turned toward him.

She could see him.

Even inside the memory.

Her face crumpled.

”I didn’t create her love.”

The invisible force tightened around her throat.

”But I taught her how to fear losing it.”

Dillan stepped forward.

”You taught her that love meant possession.”

”I taught her survival.”

”You taught her fear.”

Celia’s eyes filled with tears.

”Yes.”

The word came out broken.

”And she learned too well.”

Behind Dillan, Sasha appeared.

Not the real Sasha.

The shadow.

Its stitched smile stretched across its face.

”You’re blaming her?”

Dillan turned.

The shadow tilted its head.

”She only gave Sasha the words.”

Black veins spread across the ground.

”You gave Sasha the reason.”

Dillan froze.

The shadow pointed toward the oak tree.

At the four-year-old boy.

At the child who had whispered his first rule.

Nobody leaves.

”You were the first one who made love into a prison.”

The child beneath the tree slowly looked up.

His stitched mouth began to open.

And from inside came Dillan’s own voice.

”I only wanted someone to stay.”

The memory collapsed.

Dillan returned to the chamber on his knees.

Sasha was beside him.

Her hand hovered over his shoulder but did not touch him.

”Dillan?”

He looked at her.

For the first time, he saw the fear she had been hiding.

Not fear of him.

Fear that he would look at her love and find only damage.

Dillan reached for her hand.

Sasha flinched.

He stopped immediately.

The distance between them became unbearable.

Then Sasha slowly closed the gap herself.

Her fingers slipped into his.

The System appeared.

MEMORY ALTERATION CONFIRMED.PRIMARY INFLUENCE: CELIA.SECONDARY INFLUENCE: DILLAN RUREN’S ORIGINAL RULE.SASHA’S CHOICE: AUTHENTIC.SASHA’S INTERPRETATION OF LOVE: CONDITIONED.

Dillan stared at the final line.

Sasha squeezed his hand.

”Don’t look at me like I’m broken.”

His gaze softened.

”I’m not.”

”Don’t look at me like I’m innocent either.”

”I’m not.”

Her breathing shook.

”Then what am I?”

Dillan took a moment before answering.

”You’re someone who made a choice while afraid.”

Sasha’s eyes trembled.

”And if I make the wrong one?”

”Then it’ll still be yours.”

The shadow behind her began to burn.

A terrible sound emerged from the seventh door.

Celia screamed again.

But this time, another voice joined hers.

A child’s voice.

Dillan’s voice.

”If she chooses to leave...”

The stitched eye appeared above the chamber.

Its seams slowly pulled apart.

”...who will make her stay?”

Sasha’s shadow detached from her feet.

It rose into the air.

Behind it, a second figure emerged.

A young girl with Sasha’s face.

A red ribbon around her wrist.

And eyes filled with someone else’s memories.

The System flashed.

ORIGINAL EMOTIONAL TEMPLATE EXTRACTED.DESIGNATION: THE FIRST LESSON.PURPOSE: DEFINE LOVE THROUGH FEAR OF ABANDONMENT.WARNING: TEMPLATE IS SEEKING A NEW HOST.

The girl smiled at Sasha.

Then she turned toward Dillan.

”Teach me,” she whispered.

”Teach me how to make him stay.”

Sasha’s grip on Dillan’s hand tightened.

The girl’s smile widened.

”Or I’ll teach her again.”

The seventh door slammed shut.

And every lock in the chamber began opening at once.
