Something moved behind Sasha.

Dillan’s body reacted before his mind could.

He grabbed her wrist and pulled her aside.

A black hand emerged from the wall.

Its fingers stretched unnaturally across the bedroom, scraping against the paint.

Sasha’s expression hardened.

”Dillan.”

”I see it.”

The hand vanished.

The wall remained untouched.

But a child’s laughter echoed from inside it.

Hehehe...

Dillan stepped backward.

The System flickered.

ONEIRIC MALFORMATION: AWAKENING.

DREAM SUBJECT: MANIFESTING.

MANIFESTATION TYPE: COGNITIVE ECHO.

PHYSICAL THREAT: UNCONFIRMED.

WARNING.

DO NOT ALLOW THE ECHO TO ESTABLISH AN ANCHOR.

Sasha stared at the notification.

”What does that mean?”

Dillan kept his eyes on the wall.

”It means the dream is trying to become real.”

A voice whispered from behind the paint.

”I already am.”

The wall split open.

Not physically.

Something appeared in the space between the cracks.

A face.

Sasha’s face.

But with black eyes.

Dillan felt his stomach twist.

The echo smiled.

”You refused to choose.”

Dillan stepped in front of Sasha.

”And?”

”Now I’ll choose for you.”

The First Target

The bedroom door burst open.

Aurelia stood in the hallway.

”Dillan!”

Lyra was behind her, with Dana close beside her.

Alina appeared at the end of the corridor.

All of them froze when they saw the face inside the wall.

Dana whispered:

”What... is that?”

The echo turned toward her.

Its smile widened.

”Another anchor.”

A black thread shot from the wall.

Dillan moved instantly.

He caught the thread with his bare hand.

Pain ripped through his arm.

The System flashed.

COGNITIVE INTRUSION DETECTED.

ANCHOR ATTEMPT: SUBJECT DANA.

HOST INTERFERENCE: SUCCESSFUL.

HOST PSYCHOLOGICAL INTEGRITY: 81%.

Dillan gritted his teeth.

”Nobody touches them.”

The echo tilted its head.

”You said that before.”

Dillan’s eyes narrowed.

”Before what?”

The face inside the wall stretched.

For one brief second, it became the face of a little girl.

A girl standing beneath the oak tree.

A girl he had forgotten.

Then it whispered:

”Before you left me.”

Evelyn suddenly gasped.

She clutched her head.

”Dillan...”

He turned.

Evelyn was staring at the wall.

Tears ran down her face.

”I remember that voice.”

The echo smiled.

”Of course you do.”

The Memory Beneath the Memory

Evelyn stumbled forward.

Dillan caught her before she fell.

”What do you remember?”

She pressed a hand against her temple.

”A room.”

”What room?”

”The white room.”

Dillan’s expression tightened.

”The original System room?”

Evelyn shook her head.

”No.”

Her voice trembled.

”Before that.”

The hallway lights began flickering.

Evelyn looked directly at him.

”There was someone else in the room.”

”Who?”

”I couldn’t see their face.”

Dillan’s heartbeat quickened.

”The Authority?”

”I don’t know.”

She squeezed his arm.

”But they were speaking to you.”

”What did they say?”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Then repeated the words:

”If you want them to remain, you must first decide who deserves to.”

Dillan went still.

The echo laughed.

”There it is.”

Aurelia stepped forward.

”That’s impossible.”

Evelyn looked at her.

”Why?”

Aurelia’s expression became strained.

”Because that was the choice we rejected.”

Dillan turned toward her.

”You remember?”

Aurelia hesitated.

”Not clearly.”

”Then tell me what you know.”

Aurelia stared at the black face in the wall.

”The First Choice wasn’t the first time someone tried to make Dillan choose.”

The Echo’s Rule

The wall began pulsing.

The bedroom stretched.

The hallway lengthened.

Doors appeared along both sides.

Each one carried a name.

SASHA.

AURELIA.

ALINA.

DANA.

LYRA.

EVELYN.

The final door had no name.

Dillan stepped forward.

”What is that?”

The echo answered:

”The person you haven’t remembered.”

The nameless door opened slightly.

A cold wind swept through the hallway.

Behind it came a voice.

A girl’s voice.

”Dillan...”

He froze.

Not because he recognized it.

Because the voice sounded exactly like his own memory of loneliness.

The System appeared.

MULTIPLE MEMORY SIGNATURES DETECTED.

UNIDENTIFIED SUBJECT: ACTIVE.

COGNITIVE ECHO: ATTEMPTING RULE ESTABLISHMENT.

PROPOSED RULE:

ONE MUST BE LEFT BEHIND.

Dillan stared at the words.

The echo smiled.

”You changed your rule.”

The black threads spread across the hallway.

”So I created another.”

Sasha stepped beside Dillan.

Her crimson eyes glowed.

”You’re not making him choose.”

The echo turned toward her.

”You already chose him once.”

Sasha’s fingers curled.

”And I’d choose him again.”

The echo laughed.

”Then prove it.”

The six named doors opened simultaneously.

Inside each doorway stood a different version of Dillan.

A child.

A teenager.

A frightened boy.

A smiling boy.

A broken boy.

And one version with empty eyes.

Dillan stared at them.

The empty-eyed version stepped forward.

”You can’t save all of them.”

Dillan whispered:

”...Me.”

The version smiled.

”You never could.”

The Choice That Wasn’t His

The System displayed a new window.

COGNITIVE ECHO HAS ESTABLISHED A TEMPORARY DOMAIN.

DOMAIN RULE: ONE SUBJECT MUST BE LEFT BEHIND.

EXIT CONDITION: ACCEPTANCE OR DESTRUCTION.

DESTRUCTION REQUIREMENT: IDENTIFY THE ORIGINAL RULE.

Dillan’s expression sharpened.

”The original rule.”

He looked at the doors.

The echo was using his fear of abandonment.

His desire to preserve everyone.

But the new rule was different.

It wanted someone to be left behind.

Dillan turned toward the empty-eyed version.

”You’re not the original rule.”

The version smiled.

”I’m what your rule became.”

”No.”

Dillan stepped forward.

”You’re what someone wants me to believe it became.”

The smile faded.

Dillan looked at the System.

”Original rule.”

The notification flickered.

FOUNDATIONAL RULE: NOBODY DISAPPEARS WITHOUT LEAVING A CHOICE.

Dillan looked at everyone.

”No one here is required to sacrifice themselves.”

The echo screamed.

”THEN SOMEONE WILL REMAIN!”

The nameless door swung open.

A black silhouette stepped into the hallway.

It had no face.

No eyes.

No mouth.

Yet Dillan felt it looking directly at him.

The silhouette raised its hand.

Every door slammed shut except one.

EVELYN.

Evelyn froze.

The echo whispered:

”The first anchor must be the first to leave.”

Dillan stepped forward.

”No.”

The silhouette reached toward Evelyn.

Dillan grabbed her hand.

The System began flashing uncontrollably.

ORIGINAL ANCHOR UNDER THREAT.

SEVENTH ANCHOR: EVELYN.

ANCHOR SEVERANCE ATTEMPT DETECTED.

HOST MUST SELECT RESPONSE.

Three options appeared.

PROTECT ANCHOR.

SEVER CONNECTION.

REWRITE DOMAIN RULE.

Dillan stared at the choices.

Then he smiled.

A small, dangerous smile.

”I’ve already answered this.”

He reached toward the System.

”I don’t accept your choices.”

The three options vanished.

The hallway began to crack.

The nameless silhouette tilted its head.

For the first time...

it spoke.

”Then make your own.”

Dillan looked at Evelyn.

Then at Sasha.

Then at everyone standing behind him.

His voice was quiet.

”Fine.”

He raised his hand.

”My choice is that nobody gets left behind.”

The System went silent.

The silhouette slowly lowered its hand.

Then a new notification appeared.

UNAUTHORIZED RULE CREATION DETECTED.

RULE CONFLICT: FOUNDATIONAL.

HOST INTENT: VERIFIED.

NEW RULE CANNOT BE ESTABLISHED.

REASON:

THE HOST HAS ALREADY CREATED THIS RULE.

Dillan’s eyes widened.

”What?”

The final line appeared.

ORIGINAL RULE RESTORED.

HIDDEN CLAUSE RECOVERED:

NO ONE IS LEFT BEHIND, INCLUDING THE CREATOR.

Dillan’s blood ran cold.

Behind the nameless silhouette...

another figure appeared.

A boy.

Four years old.

Standing alone beneath the oak tree.

And he was crying.

”Dillan...”

The boy raised his head.

”You left me behind.”

The boy stood beneath the oak tree.

Four years old.

Small.

Shivering.

Alone.

Dillan stared at him.

His own face.

His own eyes.

But the boy looked at him like a stranger.

”You left me behind.”

Dillan’s throat tightened.

”I didn’t.”

The child lowered his head.

”You did.”

”I came back.”

”After you forgot.”

The hallway disappeared.

Everyone vanished.

Sasha.

Aurelia.

Alina.

Dana.

Lyra.

Evelyn.

Even The One Who Stays.

Only Dillan and the child remained beneath the oak tree.

Rain fell between them.

Dillan stepped forward.

”Who are you?”

The child looked up.

”You know.”

Dillan shook his head.

”No. I don’t.”

The child smiled sadly.

”That’s why it hurt.”

The Memory He Buried

A white notification appeared in the rain.

PRIMARY MEMORY RESTORATION: 79.4%.

HIDDEN CLAUSE: ACCESSING.

MEMORY SUBJECT: HOST.

STATUS: SELF-EXCLUSION DETECTED.

Dillan stared at the System.

”Self-exclusion?”

The child walked toward him.

”You made the rule.”

”I know.”

”You made the Core.”

”I know.”

”You saved Alina.”

Dillan’s expression changed.

”...Yes.”

The child stopped in front of him.

”Then why didn’t you save yourself?”

Dillan couldn’t answer.

The boy reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small wooden toy.

A crude figure with no face.

Dillan recognized it.

He had carved it himself.

A memory surfaced.

Four-year-old Dillan sitting beneath the oak tree, carving the toy with a blunt piece of metal.

The One Who Stays sat beside him.

”What is it?” she asked.

Young Dillan smiled.

”Me.”

”Why doesn’t it have a face?”

He looked down.

”Because I don’t want to remember this face.”

The memory shifted.

The child placed the toy beneath the tree.

Then he whispered:

”If I forget everything, someone should remember me.”

Dillan’s breathing stopped.

The child looked at him.

”You made me so you wouldn’t have to feel afraid.”

The Forgotten Anchor

Dillan took a step backward.

”You’re not a memory.”

The boy shook his head.

”No.”

”You’re not an echo.”

”No.”

”Then what are you?”

The child pointed at Dillan’s chest.

”The part of you that stayed behind.”

The System appeared.

HIDDEN ANCHOR DETECTED.

DESIGNATION: INNER HOST.

IDENTITY: DILLAN RUREN.

AGE AT CREATION: FOUR.

FUNCTION: RETAIN ORIGINAL EMOTIONAL STATE.

STATUS: ABANDONED.

Dillan stared at the final word.

Abandoned.

He had spent years fearing that everyone would leave him.

But he had done something worse.

He had created a version of himself to carry the fear...

then sealed it away.

He had left himself behind.

The child smiled.

”You wanted everyone to stay.”

His voice trembled.

”But you forgot the first person you promised to protect.”

Dillan’s eyes burned.

”I’m sorry.”

The child looked confused.

”Why?”

”Because I left you alone.”

The child lowered his gaze.

”That’s what you always say.”

Dillan knelt before him.

”Then I’ll do something different.”

The child looked up.

”What?”

Dillan held out his hand.

”I’ll take you with me.”

The Rule Rejects Him

The rain stopped.

The System flashed violently.

INNER HOST INTEGRATION ATTEMPT DETECTED.

WARNING.

INTEGRATION WILL RESTORE SUPPRESSED EMOTIONAL DATA.

POTENTIAL CONSEQUENCES:

PSYCHOLOGICAL OVERLOAD.

MEMORY COLLISION.

IDENTITY INSTABILITY.

Dillan kept his hand extended.

”Do it.”

The child stared at him.

”You might hurt.”

”I know.”

”You might remember everything.”

”I know.”

”You might hate yourself.”

Dillan swallowed.

”Then I’ll face that too.”

The child hesitated.

Then reached for his hand.

Their fingers touched.

The entire world screamed.

The Things He Couldn’t Bear

Memories crashed into Dillan.

Sasha crying.

Aurelia disappearing.

Alina volunteering to remain.

Evelyn waiting beneath the tree.

The One Who Stays being forgotten.

The black fragment whispering:

”Choose me.”

Then another memory.

Dillan alone in the white room.

The Authority speaking.

”You cannot preserve everyone.”

Young Dillan screaming:

”Then I’ll preserve myself!”

The memory turned black.

Dillan saw his own hands pressing against his chest.

Pulling something out.

A small, glowing core.

His fear.

His loneliness.

His desperate need to be remembered.

He had separated it from himself.

Not intentionally.

Not completely.

But enough.

The child beneath the tree wasn’t an imaginary friend.

He was the emotional remainder of Dillan’s original self.

The part that had never grown up.

The part that had never stopped waiting.

The part that had never stopped being afraid.

Dillan screamed.

”I’M SORRY!”

The child gripped his hand.

”Then remember me!”

Integration

The System appeared through the storm.

INNER HOST INTEGRATION: 12%.

MEMORY COLLISION: SEVERE.

HOST PSYCHOLOGICAL INTEGRITY: 43%.

WARNING: HOST IDENTITY DESTABILIZING.

Dillan collapsed to one knee.

His body felt like it was splitting apart.

He could hear voices.

Sasha calling his name.

Lyra shouting.

Aurelia crying.

Alina begging him to stop.

Evelyn whispering:

”You promised you’d find me.”

The child was still holding his hand.

”Don’t let go.”

Dillan squeezed his fingers.

”I won’t.”

The child smiled.

For the first time...

he looked less afraid.

The Choice That Belonged to Him

The System displayed three options.

INTEGRATION DECISION REQUIRED.

ACCEPT INNER HOST.

REJECT INNER HOST.

PRESERVE SEPARATION.

Dillan looked at the choices.

Then laughed weakly.

”You’re still doing this?”

The System remained silent.

”Still asking me to choose what happens to someone else?”

He looked at the child.

The child looked back.

Dillan pressed his forehead against the boy’s.

”I choose acceptance.”

The System flickered.

ACCEPTANCE CONFIRMED.

INNER HOST INTEGRATION: BEGINNING.

WARNING: ORIGINAL FEAR WILL BECOME ACCESSIBLE.

WARNING: ORIGINAL DESIRE WILL BECOME ACCESSIBLE.

WARNING: HOST WILL NO LONGER BE ABLE TO DENY THEM.

Dillan closed his eyes.

”Then let me remember.”

The child dissolved into light.

It entered Dillan’s chest.

The oak tree vanished.

The white room vanished.

The rain vanished.

And Dillan heard his own four-year-old voice one last time.

”If you ever get lonely...”

Dillan opened his eyes.

”...look for me.”

The Return

Dillan woke on the floor of his bedroom.

Sasha was kneeling beside him.

”Dillan!”

Aurelia stood behind her.

Lyra was holding Dana back.

Alina was staring at the System.

Evelyn stood near the door.

Everyone was there.

Dillan tried to sit up.

Sasha immediately grabbed his shoulders.

”Don’t move!”

He looked at her.

”How long?”

”Three minutes.”

Dillan breathed slowly.

The System appeared.

INNER HOST INTEGRATION: COMPLETE.

HIDDEN ANCHOR: ABSORBED.

MEMORY RESTORATION: 86.1%.

HOST PSYCHOLOGICAL INTEGRITY: 71%.

FOUNDATIONAL RULE: STABLE.

NEW FUNCTION UNLOCKED.

SELF-RECALL.

Dillan stared at the final notification.

”Self-Recall?”

The System answered:

HOST MAY NOW RECOVER MEMORIES THAT WERE DELIBERATELY EXCLUDED.

Aurelia’s expression changed.

”Dillan...”

He looked at her.

”What?”

She seemed frightened.

”There was something else inside you.”

Dillan nodded.

”I know.”

Sasha’s hand tightened around his.

”Is it gone?”

Dillan looked at her.

”No.”

A pause.

Then he touched his chest.

”It’s finally with me.”

The room went silent.

Until the System displayed another notification.

SELF-RECALL: FIRST MEMORY AVAILABLE.

SUBJECT: THE ONE WHO STAYS.

MEMORY TITLE: THE NAME YOU ERASED.

Dillan’s expression froze.

Across the room, The One Who Stays appeared.

Nobody had seen her enter.

Her face was pale.

”Dillan...”

He turned toward her.

”What’s your real name?”

She stared at him.

For the first time since he had found her...

she looked genuinely afraid.

Then she whispered:

”Please don’t remember it.”
