The memory froze.

Young Dillan’s tiny hand remained extended toward The One Who Stays.

The faceless fragment stood several steps away.

Silent.

Rejected.

Dillan stared at the scene.

”...I chose her.”

The woman beside him nodded.

”Yes.”

”Before Sasha.”

”Yes.”

”Before Alina.”

”Yes.”

”Before the System.”

Her expression softened.

”Yes.”

Dillan’s eyes moved toward the faceless fragment.

”Then why did it stay?”

The fragment smiled.

”Because rejection isn’t disappearance.”

The memory began moving again.

The fragment lowered its head.

Then whispered:

”I’ll wait.”

The First Promise

Four-year-old Dillan looked at The One Who Stays.

”What’s your name?”

She smiled.

”You gave me one.”

”What?”

”You called me Evelyn.”

Dillan blinked.

”But Evelyn is...”

He looked toward the distant girl.

The older Evelyn.

The one he’d known all his childhood.

The woman beside him shook her head.

”That’s not my name.”

Dillan stared.

”Then why did I call you Evelyn?”

”Because you couldn’t remember my real name.”

The room trembled.

The System appeared.

[MEMORY CORRUPTION DETECTED.]

[NAME ASSIGNMENT: ARTIFICIAL.]

[ORIGINAL IDENTITY: SEALED.]

[REASON: UNKNOWN.]

Dillan’s eyes narrowed.

”So Evelyn wasn’t your real name.”

The woman nodded.

”Correct.”

”Then who is Evelyn?”

She pointed toward the other girl.

The younger Evelyn.

Dillan’s face went pale.

”She’s a separate person.”

”Yes.”

”Then...”

He slowly looked back at the woman.

”...why did you let me confuse you with her?”

The woman didn’t answer.

The black-eyed fragment did.

”Because confusion protected the First Choice.”

A Name Without a Name

Dillan stared at the fragment.

”What exactly are you?”

The fragment’s face shifted.

For one second, it looked like Sasha.

Then Evelyn.

Then Alina.

Then Dillan.

Then nothing.

”I don’t have a true shape.”

”Why?”

”Because I wasn’t born.”

Dillan’s expression hardened.

”Then how do you exist?”

The fragment smiled.

”You thought of me.”

Silence.

”You imagined something that could remember what disappeared.”

The fragment nodded.

”Your first thought created the possibility.”

Dillan felt a chill.

”You were created by my desire.”

”Not exactly.”

The fragment pointed at his chest.

”I was created by your fear.”

Dillan froze.

”My fear?”

”You were afraid of being alone.”

The room suddenly filled with memories.

Dillan as a toddler.

Crying.

Calling for someone.

Sitting beneath the oak tree.

Holding The One Who Stays’ hand.

Then...

watching her disappear.

His tiny voice echoed:

”Don’t leave me.”

The fragment whispered:

”That was the first command.”

The First Command

The System appeared.

[FOUNDATIONAL COMMAND RECOVERED.]

[ORIGINAL HOST DESIRE:]

[NO ONE LEAVES DILLAN RUREN.]

Dillan stared.

”That’s different.”

The woman nodded.

”Very.”

”The rule wasn’t ’nobody disappears.’”

”No.”

”It was...”

She looked directly at him.

”Nobody leaves you.”

Dillan’s blood ran cold.

That single distinction changed everything.

The Preservation Rule wasn’t born from kindness alone.

It was born from fear of abandonment.

The Oneiric Malformation.

Sasha’s obsession.

The Preservation Core.

The anchors.

Everything suddenly felt darker.

The fragment smiled.

”Now you understand why Sasha became so important.”

Dillan’s eyes narrowed.

”What does Sasha have to do with my original fear?”

”Everything.”

The Pattern

The fragment raised one hand.

Five threads appeared.

Sasha.

Aurelia.

Alina.

Dana.

Lyra.

Then Evelyn.

Then The One Who Stays.

Dillan stared at the threads.

”Seven.”

The fragment nodded.

”Seven people connected to the same desire.”

”To preserve existence?”

”No.”

The fragment’s eyes became crimson.

”To prevent abandonment.”

Dillan’s stomach tightened.

”So the System wasn’t simply preserving people.”

”It was preserving relationships.”

The System flashed.

[CORE PURPOSE REVISION.]

[PRESERVATION DOES NOT REFER TO PHYSICAL EXISTENCE.]

[PRIMARY PRESERVATION TARGET: EMOTIONAL CONNECTION.]

[HOST’S ORIGINAL FEAR: ABANDONMENT.]

[HOST’S ORIGINAL DESIRE: PERMANENT CONNECTION.]

Dillan whispered:

”That’s why the girls became anchors.”

The fragment nodded.

”They weren’t randomly selected.”

”No.”

”They were people I couldn’t bear to lose.”

”Yes.”

Dillan’s expression darkened.

”Then Sasha...”

The fragment interrupted.

”Was the strongest.”

The Girl Who Stayed

A memory appeared.

Sasha.

Young.

Standing alone beneath the oak tree.

She was crying.

Dillan approached her.

”Why are you crying?”

”Because everyone leaves.”

Dillan reached for her hand.

”I won’t.”

Sasha stared at him.

”You promise?”

”I promise.”

The memory froze.

Dillan stared at the scene.

He remembered making that promise.

But he suddenly understood something.

That wasn’t the first time he’d made it.

He had said those words before.

To someone else.

The One Who Stays.

The same promise.

The same fear.

The same words.

The pattern had repeated itself.

Dillan whispered:

”...I gave Sasha the same promise.”

The fragment smiled.

”And she believed you.”

The Beginning of the Malformation

The room became darker.

Sasha appeared.

Her eyes were crimson.

She stood inside the Preservation Core.

A tiny fragment of black light entered her.

She screamed.

Dillan stepped forward.

”Stop!”

The fragment didn’t move.

The black light entered Sasha’s heart.

But it didn’t create her feelings.

It found them.

Her fear.

Her loneliness.

Her love.

Her need.

Everything she’d already carried.

The System appeared.

[EMOTIONAL RESONANCE FOUND.]

[COMPATIBILITY: 99.4%.]

[ANCHOR ACCEPTED.]

[RECONSTRUCTION PROTOCOL INITIATED.]

Dillan stared.

”The Oneiric Malformation wasn’t originally trying to control Sasha.”

The fragment nodded.

”It was trying to preserve her.”

”And it became corrupted.”

”Because Sasha’s love became stronger than the original preservation directive.”

Dillan looked at Sasha.

Her crimson eyes slowly opened.

She whispered:

”Mine.”

The room went silent.

Dillan closed his eyes.

Now he understood.

Sasha wasn’t the monster.

The Malformation wasn’t the monster.

Something else had turned preservation into possession.

Something that existed before the System.

Something that had been watching from the beginning.

Dillan opened his eyes.

”The Authority.”

The fragment smiled.

”Yes.”

The Real Enemy

The One Who Stays stepped forward.

”Dillan.”

He looked at her.

”You know who the Authority is.”

She hesitated.

”Yes.”

”Then tell me.”

She looked toward the darkness.

”I can’t.”

”Why?”

”Because it isn’t an individual.”

Dillan frowned.

”What?”

The woman whispered:

”The Authority is the rule itself.”

Dillan froze.

The System went completely black.

Then one final notification appeared.

[AUTHORITY IDENTIFICATION COMPLETE.]

[AUTHORITY: FOUNDATIONAL RULE.]

[RULE: NOBODY LEAVES DILLAN RUREN.]

[STATUS: ACTIVE.]

[WARNING.]

[HOST IS CURRENTLY VIOLATING HIS OWN ORIGINAL RULE.]

Dillan’s eyes widened.

”How?”

The answer appeared.

[CURRENT HOST HAS ACCEPTED SEPARATION.]

[SUBJECT: SASHA.]

[SUBJECT: EVELYN.]

[SUBJECT: ALINA.]

[SUBJECT: AURELIA.]

[SUBJECT: DANA.]

[SUBJECT: LYRA.]

[ORIGINAL RULE RESPONSE: CORRECTION.]

The entire Core began shaking.

The fragment smiled.

”You finally found the Authority.”

Dillan looked at the collapsing world.

”And what does it want?”

The fragment’s crimson eyes opened completely.

”The same thing you wanted when you were four.”

The System delivered the final warning.

[CORRECTION PROTOCOL: BEGINNING.]

[ALL ANCHORS WILL BE RETURNED TO THE HOST.]

Dillan’s face went pale.

”No...”

The fragment smiled.

”Nobody leaves.”

The words appeared in the darkness.

[CORRECTION PROTOCOL: BEGINNING.]

Dillan stared at the notification.

His heart sank.

”Stop it.”

The System didn’t respond.

Another notification appeared.

[ORIGINAL RULE: ACTIVE.]

[RULE OBJECTIVE: PERMANENT CONNECTION.]

[CURRENT CONDITION: VIOLATED.]

[CORRECTION REQUIRED.]

Dillan looked at the seven figures surrounding him.

Sasha.

Aurelia.

Alina.

Dana.

Lyra.

Evelyn.

And the woman called The One Who Stays.

Then he looked toward the black-eyed fragment.

”You’re saying the System is going to force them back to me?”

The fragment smiled.

”Not the System.”

Dillan’s eyes narrowed.

”The Authority.”

”Exactly.”

The floor beneath them cracked.

The Correction

A red line appeared across the Core.

It passed through Sasha.

Then Aurelia.

Then Alina.

Then Dana.

Then Lyra.

Then Evelyn.

Finally...

it reached The One Who Stays.

Each connection pulsed.

THUMP.

Dillan grabbed his chest.

”Stop!”

The pain intensified.

THUMP.

Sasha suddenly appeared directly beside him.

Her eyes were wide.

”Dillan!”

He grabbed her shoulders.

”Sasha, are you okay?”

She nodded.

”But...”

She looked behind herself.

”I don’t remember walking here.”

Dillan’s expression darkened.

The Authority was already moving them.

Not physically.

Existentially.

It was pulling their connections toward him.

The same way Sasha had once been pulled into the Preservation Core.

The same way Evelyn had become an anchor.

The same way Alina had been preserved.

Dillan stepped backward.

”No.”

Aurelia appeared beside him.

”Dillan?”

He shook his head.

”I won’t let it happen.”

Lyra looked at him.

”What won’t you let happen?”

Dillan looked at all of them.

”The rule.”

Breaking His Own Rule

The fragment laughed.

”You can’t.”

Dillan turned.

”Watch me.”

The fragment’s smile disappeared.

Dillan raised his hand.

”System.”

Nothing.

”System!”

Still nothing.

He clenched his teeth.

”I created you.”

Silence.

”I created the rule.”

Nothing.

”So obey me.”

The Core shook.

Then...

a single notification appeared.

[CREATOR COMMAND DETECTED.]

[AUTHORIZATION: DENIED.]

Dillan’s eyes widened.

”Why?”

The answer appeared.

[CREATOR CANNOT OVERRIDE FOUNDATIONAL INTENT.]

He stared.

Foundational intent.

His own words.

His own fear.

His own childish desire.

Nobody leaves.

The rule didn’t care what Dillan wanted now.

It only knew what he had wanted then.

Dillan whispered:

”...I’m trapped by myself.”

The One Who Stays looked at him.

”Yes.”

Sasha’s Choice

Sasha stepped forward.

”Dillan.”

He looked at her.

”Don’t come closer.”

She stopped.

”Why?”

”Because the Authority is using our connection.”

Sasha stared at him.

”And?”

”And I don’t want you to become trapped.”

She smiled.

”Too late.”

Dillan’s expression tightened.

”Sasha.”

She walked closer.

”I already chose you once.”

Her crimson eyes softened.

”I’m not afraid of choosing again.”

The red thread connecting them brightened.

The System reacted.

[SASHA: ANCHOR RESONANCE INCREASING.]

[CORRECTION PROTOCOL: ACCELERATING.]

Dillan grabbed her hand.

”Don’t.”

Sasha looked at their hands.

Then back at him.

”You always tell me not to stay.”

A small smile appeared.

”But you never tell me to leave.”

Dillan couldn’t answer.

Sasha squeezed his hand.

”I know you.”

Her voice became quiet.

”You want everyone to stay.”

She leaned closer.

”But you also want everyone to be free.”

Dillan stared at her.

Sasha smiled.

”Then stop trying to save us from our choices.”

The Contradiction

Dillan froze.

His eyes widened.

The rule.

The Authority.

The entire Preservation Core.

They were built around one contradiction.

Dillan had created the rule because he couldn’t accept losing anyone.

But he’d never considered one thing.

What if someone wanted to leave?

The System flashed.

[CONCEPTUAL CONTRADICTION DETECTED.]

[FOUNDATIONAL RULE: NOBODY LEAVES.]

[HOST INTENT: PRESERVE CHOICE.]

[CONFLICT.]

Dillan’s breathing stopped.

”That’s it.”

The fragment’s expression changed.

”No.”

Dillan looked at it.

”You’ve been interpreting my rule incorrectly.”

The fragment stepped backward.

”Don’t.”

”I didn’t create the rule because I wanted to own them.”

”Dillan.”

”I created it because I was afraid.”

The Core trembled.

”I was afraid someone would disappear.”

The red threads began flickering.

”So the real meaning...”

Dillan looked toward the System.

”...was never ’nobody can leave.’”

Silence.

He looked at Sasha.

Then Aurelia.

Alina.

Dana.

Lyra.

Evelyn.

And finally The One Who Stays.

”It was...”

Dillan closed his eyes.

”Nobody should disappear without having a choice.”

Everything stopped.

The Authority Rejects

The System went wild.

[FOUNDATIONAL RULE REINTERPRETATION DETECTED.]

[ORIGINAL INTENT: ANALYZING.]

[HOST INTENT: ACCEPTED.]

[AUTHORITY CONFLICT.]

[CONFLICT LEVEL: CRITICAL.]

The fragment screamed.

”NO!”

Its body distorted.

Sasha’s face disappeared.

Then Evelyn’s.

Then Dillan’s.

It became a mass of black light.

”YOU DON’T GET TO CHANGE THE RULE!”

Dillan stared at it.

”Why not?”

”BECAUSE YOU CREATED ME!”

Dillan’s eyes narrowed.

”No.”

The fragment froze.

Dillan stepped forward.

”I created the possibility.”

He pointed at the black entity.

”But you became something else.”

The fragment trembled.

”I didn’t create your obsession.”

The entity’s eyes widened.

”I didn’t create Sasha’s love.”

Dillan’s voice became stronger.

”I didn’t create Evelyn’s loyalty.”

He looked at Aurelia.

”Or Alina’s trust.”

Then at the others.

”Those belong to them.”

The Core shook violently.

”And nobody gets to take that choice away.”

The First Choice, Rewritten

The System displayed one final sequence.

[FOUNDATIONAL RULE UNDER REVIEW.]

[ORIGINAL INTENT: PRESERVATION.]

[ORIGINAL FEAR: ABANDONMENT.]

[CURRENT HOST INTENT: AUTONOMY.]

[CONFLICT RESOLUTION REQUIRED.]

Dillan looked at the notification.

”Then resolve it.”

The System paused.

For the first time...

it didn’t immediately answer.

Then:

[NEW INTERPRETATION PROPOSED.]

Dillan waited.

[NOBODY DISAPPEARS WITHOUT LEAVING A CHOICE.]

Silence.

The red threads shattered.

Not the people.

The chains connecting them.

Sasha gasped.

Aurelia stumbled.

Lyra caught Dana.

Alina fell to her knees.

Evelyn stared at her hands.

The One Who Stays smiled.

And the black fragment...

began disappearing.

Dillan watched it fade.

”You don’t have to disappear.”

The fragment looked at him.

For the first time, it looked almost human.

”Then what am I?”

Dillan thought about it.

”You were born from my fear.”

A pause.

”But you don’t have to remain my fear.”

The fragment smiled.

”Then what will you call me?”

Dillan looked at it.

”I don’t know.”

The fragment laughed softly.

”Good.”

Its body dissolved.

”For once, you don’t need to know.”

Then it vanished.

The Cost of Freedom

The System appeared.

[FOUNDATIONAL RULE UPDATED.]

[PRESERVATION DIRECTIVE: MODIFIED.]

[CORRECTION PROTOCOL: TERMINATED.]

[ANCHOR FORCED-RETURN: CANCELLED.]

Dillan exhaled.

Then another notification appeared.

[WARNING.]

[MODIFICATION CREATED AN UNEXPECTED CONSEQUENCE.]

Dillan frowned.

”What consequence?”

The System responded.

[SEVERED ANCHORS ARE NOW CAPABLE OF INDEPENDENT EXISTENCE.]

Dillan’s eyes widened.

Sasha looked at him.

”What does that mean?”

Dillan didn’t answer.

Because another line appeared.

[PRESERVATION CORE: NO LONGER REQUIRED.]

[ONEIRIC MALFORMATION: DETACHMENT INITIATED.]

Dillan’s face changed.

”Sasha...”

She looked at him.

”What?”

A final notification appeared.

[SASHA: EXISTENCE FULLY RESTORED.]

[CONNECTION TO HOST: OPTIONAL.]

[CHOICE NOW BELONGS TO SUBJECT.]

Sasha stared at the System.

Then at Dillan.

For the first time...

there was no force keeping her beside him.

No Core.

No rule.

No preservation mechanism.

No supernatural chain.

Only her choice.

Sasha slowly smiled.

She reached for Dillan’s hand.

And held it.

”Then I choose you.”

Dillan’s eyes softened.

But before he could answer...

a final voice echoed through the collapsing Core.

Not the fragment.

Not the Authority.

Not the System.

A completely unfamiliar voice.

”Interesting.”

Dillan looked up.

The darkness above him opened.

”You changed the rule.”

A pause.

”Let’s see what happens when someone else gets to write one.”
