Chapter 55: Testing the Waters

Following the fourth rope bridge from the left, the five of them safely reached the opposite side once more.

This time, the lighting arrangement had changed again.

The illuminating candlesticks had taken the form of a massive ”stone altar.”

Circular candles were arranged around the stone altar—and on either side of it, there were only two rope bridges.

From within the darkness, Crow-Manʼs voice sounded again.

”Caw caw, congratulations on passing the ʼreward-punishment questionʼ with all members intact... Therefore, when the decision-making question begins, there will be a ʼhintʼ present.”

”Caw caw, welcome to this roomʼs ʼdecision-making questionʼ.”

As soon as the words fell, a crow flapped its wings and descended from the darkness onto the stone altar.

Then, the crowʼs form rapidly expanded, transforming into the appearance of ”Crow-Man.”

Lin Yu stepped forward with his hands in his pockets.
”Wow, so this is the ʼhintʼ thatʼs present?”

”Caw—”

The Crow-Man on the altar made a sound, then sat among the candles and spoke softly.

”Both bridges this time lead to the next room...”

”Beep—”

”...However, one can carry three people and the other can carry two—everyone must step onto both bridges simultaneously, otherwise both bridges will collapse.”

”You only have one chance to ask me a question—I wonʼt answer any questions that reveal which bridge can carry how many people.”

As Crow-Man spoke, the five exchanged glances.

Number Eight was the first to speak: ”This Crow-Man says it wonʼt answer questions revealing which bridge carries how many people, so shouldnʼt we think of an indirect way to ask?”

”Like if three of us take the left bridge, can we pass or something like that?”

Before the others could react.

Crow-Man interrupted him first.

”Caw caw, I wonʼt answer that kind of question either!”

As it spoke, Lin Yu spoke up again.

”I actually thought of a solution for this game—I plan to ask, ʼIf two people walk on each bridge and the remaining person is already dead, will the bridges still collapse?ʼ”

As he spoke, Lin Yu pulled out his pistol.

”If the answer is yes, Iʼll randomly shoot one, so four people can survive.”

After Lin Yu finished his proposal, Unforgotten immediately screamed.

”Whoʼd believe youʼd do it randomly! Youʼre absolutely going to shoot me!”

Unforgotten looked at Lin Yu in terror as she spoke.

Lin Yu glanced at Unforgotten: ”Oh, you saw through me... Maybe I should shoot first and ask later.”

”Honestly, I think if two go on one side... it definitely wonʼt collapse.”

As he spoke, Lin Yu pulled the revolver from his left pocket.

”Stop pulling out guns all the time! What if—damn it, donʼt gamble on that possibility!” Unforgotten said, sweating profusely. ”And... and this ʼdecision-making questionʼ might have a trap.”

As Unforgotten spoke, Lin Yu laughed.

”Oh? Whereʼs the trap?”

With the gun pointed at her, Unforgottenʼs speech noticeably sped up.

”Well, look, didnʼt Crow-Man say at the beginning that in this room, asking it questions would be replaced by asking specific creatures!”

”So the Crow-Man sitting there might not be the ʼExaminerʼ Crow-Man, right?”

As Unforgotten spoke, Lin Yu nodded.

”That makes sense, but so what?”

He still didnʼt lower the gun.

”Earlier, it flew over in the form of a ʼcrowʼ... Doesnʼt that mean itʼs actually some kind of ʼavatarʼ?”

”And among the three known avatars, aside from the one representing ʼtruth,ʼ the other two crows both lie!”

”If this guy is one of ʼchangeʼ or ʼfalsehood,ʼ then we might not need to believe anything it said about the two bridges!”

Unforgotten spoke rapidly, and the other three players, hearing her rapid-fire words, all looked thoughtful.

”That does seem reasonable...”

Iron Uncle murmured.

Lin Yu nodded.

”Itʼs very reasonable, because Unforgotten is right.”

Lin Yuʼs right hand came out of his pocket—holding a lie detector flashing red light.

He had pressed the button when Crow-Man spoke its first sentence.

”This is the ʼLie Detectorʼ I got from the first dungeon. The ʼbeepʼ earlier was from it... It means Crow-Manʼs first sentence was a lie.”

”Its first sentence was ʼBoth bridges lead to the next room,ʼ which was the premise of its entire speech... This means everything it said afterward is wrong.”

”So we can completely ignore what this Crow-Man said—itʼs purely here to mislead us.”

Lin Yu spoke calmly. Unforgotten froze for a moment before speaking with a sob in her voice.

”You had something this good and didnʼt bring it out earlier?! And you knew it was lying, so you were just scaring me for fun?!”

”I wanted to test how smart you really are,” Lin Yu said with a smile, putting away the pistol. ”What, you can mess with me but I canʼt mess with you?”

Iron Uncle coughed and spoke.

”Alright, since its words are misleading... does that mean only one of these two bridges leads to the next room?”

Number Eightʼs eyes lit up.

”In that case, couldnʼt we just ask it—no need to ask which bridge carries how many people, just ask which bridge leads to the next room!”

Lin Yu shook his head.

”If there were only ʼtruthʼ and ʼfalsehoodʼ avatars, it wouldnʼt matter even if everything it said was lies... We could just interpret it backwards.”

”But since thereʼs a ʼchangeʼ avatar, that means if it might be the ʼchangeʼ avatar, asking it anything is pointless.”

As Lin Yu explained, Number Eight froze.

”Ah, it can be like that too... Then what do we do?! Another fifty-fifty chance?!”

After speaking, Number Eight also looked at Unforgotten.

Noticing his gaze, Unforgotten angrily pulled out her utility knife.

”What do you mean, huh? What do you mean? You donʼt have a gun but you still want me to go first? Believe it or not, Iʼll stab you to death! Student brat! Canʼt beat Nine Waters but I can beat you?”

Unforgotten screeched in rage.

Number Eight quickly said, ”I absolutely didnʼt mean that, Iʼll follow whatever Nine Waters big bro decides.”

As he spoke, he looked at Lin Yu with an ingratiating smile.

Lin Yu, however, walked silently up to Unforgotten, gently reached out, and took the utility knife from her hand.

Unforgotten watched Lin Yuʼs actions, confused and angry.

”What do you mean? Youʼre afraid Iʼll actually stab it? Youʼre not really planning to make me randomly pick one, are you?”

Lin Yu shook his head.

”No, because if ʼboth lead to the next roomʼ is a lie, then the truth could be ʼonly one leads to the next room,ʼ but it could also be ʼneither leads to the next room.ʼ”

”Combined with the Examiner Crow-Manʼs voice from the darkness earlier... this ʼCrow-Manʼ in front of us, whose every word is untrustworthy, must also be some kind of ʼhint.ʼ”

”So, what is it hinting at?”

”Considering the answer to the last roomʼs ʼdecision-making question,ʼ I have a guess...”

As he spoke, Lin Yu threw the utility knife behind Crow-Man.

”Hey—my knife!”

Unforgotten screamed.

But before her voice faded, a crisp sound came from the darkness.

”Clatter.”

Lin Yu smiled.

”The candles were arranged so convincingly... From our angle, we couldnʼt see thereʼs a path behind at all...”

”But unfortunately, throwing something reveals it.”
