Chapter 487: I Am Done with Elder Sister Yueshi! And with Mother Too!

Morning.

When the first rays of sunlight fell quietly across the windowʼs edge, the young girl lying on her bed stirred and slowly came awake.

The very first thing she wanted to do after opening her eyes was to go to the bamboo grove at the foot of Qianxue Peak and look in on Xiao Mo.

Though Tushan Jingci had been quietly reassuring herself over and over, telling herself that Xiao Mo would certainly come out of seclusion without any trouble, that nothing untoward would happen to Xiao Mo, the worry and longing at the very bottom of her heart simply would not go away no matter what she did.

And so, the moment the sky grew light, Tushan Jingci quietly changed her clothes and prepared to slip away to Xiao Moʼs courtyard.

The outcome, naturally, was just as one might expect.

Tushan Jingci was caught red-handed by Yueshi.

”Elder Sister Yueshi, please just let me go...”

”Elder Sister Yueshi...”

”Nothing will come of it if I go.”
”Xiao Mo is already in seclusion anyway...”

”I know Mother worries there might be unfavorable gossip between me and Xiao Mo.”

”But Xiao Mo is in seclusion. He is sitting there like a stone right now, not moving at all. What kind of unfavorable rumor could possibly come of that...”

Tushan Jingci spoke as she gently shook Yueshiʼs arm, coaxing her in the way she always had.

The young girlʼs voice was soft and yielding, carrying a faint, ingratiating warmth.

”...”

With her Young Miss looking at her with those pleading eyes, and calling to her one request after another, Yueshiʼs heart softened little by little.

Thinking it over quietly, Yueshi felt there was a certain logic to what the Young Miss was saying.

After all, Xiao Mo was in seclusion. There would be no contact whatsoever between them. The Young Miss only wanted to go and look at him for a moment. That much truly seemed harmless but then Yueshi thought of the Ladyʼs instructions, and a look of conflict rose to her face once more.

”Elder Sister Yueshi, you will not say a word, I will not say a word, and Elder Sister Xiaoyin and the others would never dare say anything either. Nothing will go wrong, truly.”

Seeing the faintest hint of hesitation appear in Elder Sister Yueshiʼs expression, Tushan Jingci went on coaxing her in a soft voice, and as she spoke more earnestly, a faint mist began to gather gradually in those beautiful eyes of hers.

Before long, a glistening teardrop at the corner of the young girlʼs eye seemed almost ready to fall, trembling there as though it might spill over at any moment.

”It cannot be done, Young Miss.”

In the end, Yueshi took a deep breath and made herself firm once more.

”From here on I will stay by the Young Missʼs side at all times. If the Young Miss goes to the study hall, I will accompany you there as well. In short, I cannot allow the Young Miss to go and see Xiao Mo.”

In the past, Yueshi would not have thought much of this sort of thing but the Young Miss had gradually grown up now. How could it be right for her to have her thoughts fixed so entirely on a household servant?

That was absolutely not acceptable.

”Hmph! I am done with Elder Sister Yueshi!”

Seeing that Elder Sister Yueshi would not relent no matter what she said, Tushan Jingci let out an indignant huff, turned, and ran back into her room, pulling the door shut behind her with a heavy thud.

”Aah...”

Looking at that firmly closed door, Yueshi let out a sigh, a helpless look settling in her eyes.

Inside her room, Tushan Jingci lay slumped across her desk, both small arms stretched out flat in front of her, her chin resting on the cool surface of the table. She looked like a fox that had been caught in a frost, without a shred of spirit.

Even the fluffy fox tail behind her hung limp and listless, its tip dangling over the edge of the chair, not stirring at all.

”How is Xiao Mo doing right now?”

”He must have begun his seclusion by now...”

”He would not have run into any trouble, would he?”

The more Tushan Jingci thought about it, the more unsettled she felt, and the stronger the urge to go and see Xiao Mo became.

In the past, Elder Sister Yueshi had also kept her from going to see Xiao Mo but no matter what, when she went to the study hall for class, Xiao Mo could at least accompany her there.

And now? Xiao Mo could not even go to the study hall with her anymore. Did that not mean she might not see him for many, many days?

”No, that will not do!”

Tushan Jingci suddenly sat up straight, her small face set with resolution.

”Opportunities have to be seized for yourself! If Elder Sister Yueshi will not let me go, then I simply have to sneak out!”

No sooner said than done.

Half an hour later, judging that Elder Sister Yueshi must have lowered her guard by now, Tushan Jingci quietly activated her innate divine ability and concealed both her figure and her presence entirely.

She had considerable confidence in her own technique.

After all, the Tushan clanʼs greatest strengths had always been their illusory arts and their mastery of the spirit and soul.

She opened her door with careful hands, rose onto her tiptoes, and crept out of her room but the young girl had barely taken a few steps into the courtyard before a soft, quiet cough came from behind her.

”Ahem... and where might the Young Miss be going?”

Tushan Jingciʼs whole body stiffened. She turned around slowly, and there was Elder Sister Yueshi, standing behind her at some point she could not account for, a jade pendant held between her fingers, looking at her with a perfectly calm expression.

”Elder Sister Yueshi... I...”

Tushan Jingciʼs eyes shifted back and forth as her mind worked quickly, trying to think of what excuse she could piece together to talk her way past Yueshi.

”The Young Miss need not trouble herself.” Yueshi gave a quiet sigh, her tone gentle but leaving no room for debate. ”This jade pendant was personally entrusted to me by the Lady. It is a fine detection treasure, kept precisely to prevent the Young Miss from sneaking away.”

She paused, looked at her Young Missʼs small face, so full of dejection, and though she felt a pang of reluctance, she continued all the same.

”The Young Miss should rest properly. The Young Miss ought to be putting her attention toward her own cultivation, not toward a household servant.”

”Hmph!”

Knowing that any hope of slipping out was gone, Tushan Jingci puffed up like a little hen spoiling for a fight and marched back to her room in a huff, the door slamming shut behind her once more.

”I am done with Elder Sister Yueshi! And with Mother too!”

From inside the room, the young girlʼs voice came through, thick with indignation.

After being caught trying to escape, Tushan Jingci appeared to settle down considerably and spent the entire morning behaving herself in her room, seemingly having given up on the idea of sneaking out but when the afternoon came, she still could not let it go, and quietly attempted to slip away once more.

The moment she opened the door, Yueshi was standing right there in the doorway, looking at her with a calm, undisturbed expression.

That evening, after her bath, Tushan Jingci waited for the night to deepen and all to go quiet around her. Then, with no one in sight, she quietly activated her technique once more, transformed herself into a small snow-white fox, and crept out through the window with careful paws.

This time, she finally made it out of the courtyard.

The white fox ran lightly along the path, moonlight spilling over her fluffy tail. She covered her fox mouth with both front paws, quietly rejoicing to herself, certain that this time she would surely succeed but when she had run no more than a li along the path and looked up ahead, Yueshi was standing there in the distance, still and unhurried, as though she had been waiting there for some time already.
