Chapter 44: Xiao Mo, I Think Iʼve Fallen in Love with You

The next day, Bai Ruxue had mostly recovered.

Naturally, Xiao Mo was relieved about Ruxueʼs recovery but after Ruxue got better, Xiao Mo always felt she was somewhat strange.

Xiao Mo noticed that Ruxue often stole glances at him.

When he looked toward her, she would quickly avert her gaze and pretend nothing had happened.

After he looked away, she would secretly peek at him again.

Just like now, Ruxue was hanging clothes to dry over there.

Although Xiao Mo was holding a book and flipping through it, he could already sense Bai Ruxueʼs gaze.

Xiao Mo raised his head and met Bai Ruxueʼs eyes.

Bai Ruxue seemed electrified and quickly withdrew her gaze, turning her head to continue hanging clothes, even pretending to smooth out clothes that were already flat.

Xiao Mo put down his book and walked toward Bai Ruxue.
Sensing Xiao Mo walking toward her, Bai Ruxueʼs heartbeat gradually quickened.

The closer Xiao Mo got, the more nervous Bai Ruxue became, and her movements of hanging clothes became faster.

”Ruxue, whatʼs wrong? Is there something troubling you?”

Xiao Mo walked to Bai Ruxueʼs side and asked.

”Ah? No, no, there isnʼt...” Bai Ruxueʼs eyes darted around, her fair and delicate small hands waving continuously, ”What could be troubling me? Nothing, nothing at all...”

”Really nothing?” Xiao Mo asked.

”Really nothing...” Bai Ruxueʼs eyes darted around, looking guilty, and her cheeks were red.

Xiao Mo didnʼt know why she was blushing just from hanging clothes.

Just as Xiao Mo was about to ask again.

A piece of clothing beside Xiao Mo wasnʼt hung properly and slowly slipped down from the bamboo pole.

Xiao Mo instinctively reached out to catch the garment.

The smooth moisture and silky texture of the fabric made Xiao Mo freeze.

Looking at what was in his hands, it turned out to be...

”Pervert!”

Bai Ruxueʼs cheeks turned as red as strawberries, and she quickly snatched the undergarment from Xiao Moʼs palm.

Clutching the undergarment to her chest, Bai Ruxue ran into the room and shut the door with a bang.

”Somethingʼs not right.”

Xiao Mo looked at the young womanʼs tightly closed door, deep in thought.

Ruxue... actually knows how to be shy now?

You have to know, there was once before when an undergarment had blown onto Xiao Moʼs face, Ruxue had laughed very happily and even wanted to stuff it further into Xiao Moʼs mouth.

During lunch, Bai Ruxue still took a bite of rice and stole a glance at Xiao Mo.

When Xiao Mo took the rice bowl and accidentally touched her hand.

Bai Ruxue pulled back her hand as if electrified, looking somewhat dazed, and quickly sat down to eat the rice in her bowl.

Xiao Mo and Little Green exchanged glances, both looking puzzled.

”Big Brother Xiao, whatʼs wrong with sister?”

Finding an opportunity when sister left, Little Green asked with some concern.

”I donʼt know either.” Xiao Mo shook his head, ”Ruxue has been like this since early this morning.”

Little Green: ”...”

Actually, how to put this.

If Bai Ruxue were an ordinary woman, Xiao Mo would find her behavior today quite normal but for the originally silly Bai Ruxue to suddenly understand shame overnight, and even show the bashfulness of first love, this really made Xiao Mo feel very strange...

He was even a bit unaccustomed to it.

That evening, after Xiao Mo finished bathing and came out, he found Bai Ruxue was gone, with only Little Green in the courtyard feeding silkworms.

”Little Green, whereʼs your sister?” Xiao Mo asked.

”Big Brother Xiao, sister said she went out for a walk and would be back soon.” Little Green held mulberry leaves and looked up to say.

”Mm.” Xiao Mo thought for a moment, ”Iʼll go look for her. Little Green, can you stay home alone?”

”I can.” Little Green nodded, even a flash of joy in her eyes.

After Xiao Mo left, Little Green revealed her true form and began looking for food.

Although sisterʼs cooking was quite good, she hadnʼt eaten mice in a long time and missed them quite a bit.

Leaving the village, Xiao Mo roughly guessed where Bai Ruxue was.

Xiao Mo walked directly toward She Mountain.

Sure enough.

On that rock, Xiao Mo saw her in a white dress, hugging her knees and raising her head to look at the stars in the night sky.

”Encountered something unhappy again?”

Xiao Mo called out to Bai Ruxue.

Hearing Xiao Moʼs voice, Bai Ruxueʼs delicate body trembled slightly, and she withdrew her gaze from the sky, ”No, no I havenʼt.”

”Really not?” Xiao Mo walked in front of Bai Ruxue.

”Really not this time.” Bai Ruxue lowered her head and said softly.

”But you were quite strange today, and you seemed to be avoiding me all along. Why is that?”

”I wasnʼt. You must be mistaken.” Bai Ruxue turned her head away.

Xiao Mo glanced at Bai Ruxueʼs profile, ”Alright then, maybe I really was mistaken. Itʼs getting late, letʼs go back, or Little Green will worry.”

”Oh...”

Bai Ruxue got down from the rock and followed beside Xiao Mo as they walked down the mountain.

The two walked on the mountain path, moonlight silently flowing like water, filtering through layers upon layers of pine branches, casting fragmented and mottled shadows on their bodies.

Xiao Mo intentionally or unintentionally slowed his pace, and Bai Ruxueʼs dress hem gently brushed past the drooping grass tips by the roadside, as if afraid of disturbing the sleeping creatures in this mountain night.

Two silhouettes cast on the dark ground, sometimes drawing near, sometimes separating.

Green glimmers floated as fireflies appeared quietly at some unknown time, dancing lightly in the low air like tiny stars.

A firefly drifted near the womanʼs temple, like a flowing star, gently resting for a moment before leisurely flying away.

The woman raised her head, looking at his profile.

Bai Ruxue felt as if the softest part of her heart was being gently touched.

As if something was about to break through the soil of her heart.

Sweet and sour.

Wanting him to know, yet afraid for him to know.

”Xiao Mo...” Bai Ruxue seemed to gather courage, her cherry lips parting slightly as she softly called his name.

”Mm.” Xiao Mo responded.

”Never mind...” Looking into his eyes, the woman retreated again, ”I just noticed that tonightʼs fireflies are quite beautiful.”

”They are quite beautiful.”

”...”

Bai Ruxue lowered her head, falling into silence, her small hands rubbing her dress hem but soon, Bai Ruxue gathered courage again, ”Xiao Mo.”

”Mm?”

”Never mind... I noticed todayʼs moon is very round.”

Xiao Mo looked up, ”Itʼs alright.”

”Xiao Mo...”

”Mm?”

”I... I noticed there are so many stars tonight.”

”There are quite a few.”

”Xiao Mo... I noticed Auntie Wang seemed particularly happy today?”

”It should be because her sonʼs business in the county town took off.”

”I noticed Little Green doesnʼt like eating green peppers.”

”I noticed that long ago.”

”Xiao Mo, I noticed the big black bull in the village has gotten lazy.”

”Because itʼs old.”

”Xiao Mo.”

”Mm?”

”I noticed that I think Iʼve fallen in love with you.”
