Demon Cultivator in Abyssal Era

Chapter 391: Chapter 205: Remembrance (Part 2)

From the conversation, Chu Xiu learned that while he was in the Abyss, these parents would gather together to share the latest news. They even had a dedicated group. If any parent’s child returned first, they would immediately become the center of attention, and every parent would eagerly rush to ask for information.

Chu’s father and mother got acquainted with the woman because her son, like Chu Xiu, was in a support profession at the rear.

The boy died in this disaster.

Chu’s father and mother spoke words of comfort, but that mother seemed distracted. She glimpsed Chu Xiu standing behind Chu’s father, glanced quickly away, and her expression darkened further. Chu’s father and mother exchanged a glance, dared not say more, and hurriedly took their leave.

The entire morning passed in such a stifling atmosphere. Every time Chu’s mother finished a conversation, she would advise Chu Xiu not to enter the Abyss again and to find a stable factory job instead.

As noon approached, the memorial service finally began formally.

Chu Xiu stood among the students, with Zhang Qingshan and Chu Qin beside him, and a mass of first and second-year students behind them.

The principal personally conducted the memorial ceremony. As the prayers sounded, Chu Xiu noted that Zhang Qingshan beside him unconsciously clenched his fist, while Chu Qin reached over and gently held his hand.

Chu Xiu recalled attending a similar memorial service shortly after they started school. That time, it wasn’t an Abyssal misfortune but happened when an Abyssal Rift suddenly opened in the east of the city. Although most Abyssal monsters were shattered by a dense fire cannon system, a few broke through the defense line and unexpectedly intruded into a temporary shelter, causing thousands of casualties.

Back then, Qingshan also seemed to have clenched his fist just like now. However, compared to the current grief and unwillingness, there was more of a fiery desire to change something in his eyes.

After the moment of silence ended, Chu Xiu heard Zhang Qingshan’s voice in his ear, ”Ah Chu, what do you plan to do next?”

Chu Xiu paused and said, ”My mom wants me to find a factory job. See if my professional talent can be of any help.”

”Um... if those family members have no objection, your talent might quite suit a funeral home.” Zhang Qingshan made a somewhat stiff joke.

”What about you?” Chu Xiu asked.

”I want to join the army.” Zhang Qingshan didn’t hesitate at all.

”Join the army? Haven’t you already joined the military?” Chu Xiu turned his head slightly.

”It’s different. Now, I only represent the government in exploring and overseeing affairs in the Corpse Demon World. Essentially, I’m still an ordinary Awakened.”

”When I say joining the army, I mean going to the front line against the Abyssal Rift.”

Zhang Qingshan said, his tone firm, as if he had been contemplating it for a long time.

”The front line against the Abyssal Rift, huh...” Chu Xiu murmured softly.

Abyssal Rifts refer to temporal-spatial fissures that occasionally appear on Blue Star, connecting to a certain Abyss. Every time, a large number of Abyssal creatures surge from them, currently a major threat to human survival, even though governments worldwide invest substantial funds annually to build defense lines, it is difficult to completely prevent Abyssal creatures from harming humans.

Worse still, Qin Xiang had mentioned to Chu Xiu that Blue Star is gradually sinking into the Abyss.

As they descend deeper into the Abyss, future Awakened will face increasingly difficult trials, potentially encountering previously unrecorded unknown entities during exploration.

For ordinary people, the most direct perception is that the frequency and intensity of Abyssal Rift appearances have been rapidly increasing in recent years.

However, due to the theory that ”civilization can resist the Abyss,” the Abyssal Rifts directly appearing on Blue Star currently are still minor disturbances.

They might shatter countless families overnight but cannot shake the foundation of human survival.

The real threat comes from those [Fixed Abyssal Rifts].

A normal Abyssal Rift shows signs before appearing, allowing it to be predicted in advance using detection instruments. When the energy fluctuation reaches its peak, it briefly tears open a temporal-spatial fissure, typically lasting only five to fifteen minutes.

This allows humans to prepare well in advance.

But [Fixed Abyssal Rifts] refer to those permanent rifts that humans do not know how to close.

These rifts usually exist in remote valleys and deserts, and the largest [Fixed Abyssal Rift] currently discovered is on the moon and Mars!

The scale of Abyssal creatures surging from these rifts is ten million to over a billion times that of ordinary rifts! Every year a great number of soldiers die fighting against these Abyssal creatures, undoubtedly the front line of confrontation against the Abyss!

”Where I want to go is the frontline base on Mars.”

”The survival environment on Mars is poor, and the difficulty of obtaining supplies is high. Only Awakened have the ability to fight there!” Zhang Qingshan said.

”Hmm...” Chu Xiu remained silent.

The frontline battlefield is always the place for the fastest growth.

Not only can you hone your combat skills between life and death daily, but you also have access to top-level resource allocation, with the entire nation as your backing, providing almost unlimited support.

It can even be said that the growth rate on the front line is much faster than exploring in the Corpse Demon World!

Of course, the danger is exponentially higher; they are completely different concepts.

Chu Xiu wasn’t surprised by his friend’s decision. After all, Zhang Qingshan is not someone swayed by emotions or who acts on a momentary impulse, but someone who seriously considers the feasibility of his ideals and how to achieve them.
