The Roach God

He took the corridor run himself, with Khrr and two from the sharpened Cerci line, and set exactly one rule before they left: observation only, at maximum distance, with a withdrawal signal that overrode any decision either of them had made about anything.

Thresh’s map put the corridor’s near mouth nine hours’ travel east of the deep ground, and the map was, in the event, almost exactly right.

Sacha’s estimation of Thresh went up another notch. His estimation of his own position went down considerably.

They smelled it before they saw it.

The corridor announced itself at a distance of what Sacha guessed was thirty body-lengths — not with a border-mark, nothing as considered as the rats’ careful grammar, but with a wash of overlapping scent so dense and so contradictory that his antennae struggled to resolve it into components at all.

Two dominant signatures, layered over each other again and again in successive claims and re-claims and re-re-claims, going back further than he could read. And underneath them, saturating the substrate itself, the accumulated residue of everything that had died in between.

He’d encountered something structurally similar exactly once in his old life, at a scene he had spent several years deliberately not thinking about.

The specific quality of a place where the dying had gone on long enough to stop being an event and start being a condition.

Khrr went rigid beside him and did not move for a long moment.

Sacha let it take the time. He was taking it too.

They stopped well back, upwind, on a ridge of broken footing, with three separate withdrawal routes identified and confirmed before anyone was allowed to get comfortable. From there, the corridor was visible as a wide, low channel running east to west — and it was in use.

Not fought over, in that moment. Worked.

Sacha watched for the better part of two hours and slowly assembled what he was looking at. A column moving west along the corridor’s north wall in disciplined file:

bodies in a repeating pattern, carriers in the center, outriders spaced at intervals that never varied by more than a body-length in either direction. He counted the interval four separate times to be sure he wasn’t inventing the regularity.

He wasn’t.

The tale has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

That spacing was doctrine.

Not a raid.

Not a war party.

Logistics. Somebody was running a supply line through contested ground on a fixed schedule, in the open, with the unhurried confidence of an organization that had done this a thousand times and fully expected to do it a thousand more.

Hive, Thresh had marked, three structures east.

This was the hive’s arm, reaching west, and Sacha found himself revising his mental image of what a hive meant.

He’d been picturing something enormous and dangerous.

What he was actually looking at was something administered, which was considerably worse, because you could sometimes get past enormous and dangerous by being clever, and nobody had ever gotten past administration by being clever.

Forty minutes later, a second group appeared from the south wall — smaller, faster, moving against the column’s direction, and Sacha felt Khrr tense beside him in anticipation of a fight.

The fight did not come.

The column’s outriders shifted formation to meet the incoming group, and the shift was so smooth, so evidently rehearsed, that Sacha understood before anything else happened that both sides knew this dance completely.

The two groups did not engage.

They measured each other — a slow pass at a fixed distance, each holding its shape, neither yielding ground nor taking any — and then continued in their respective directions as though nothing had occurred.

Something about that was more frightening than a battle would have been.

This was not a war corridor.

This was a war that had been going on long enough to develop etiquette.

He watched a while longer, cataloguing what he could:

the column’s interval, the direction of travel, the rough duration between passes.

Then, before anyone’s nerve had a chance to become a factor, he gave the withdrawal signal.

They didn’t talk on the way back, because they couldn’t, and because there wasn’t much either of them would have said if they could. Sacha spent the nine hours doing arithmetic he didn’t enjoy.

Sixty roaches.

Four drifting lineages, none of them mature.

Echelon 3, with a rung’s progress the system itself had described as marginal.

Set against a supply column he could not have stopped with every asset he owned, belonging to a power whose actual territory Thresh had never once dared approach — and contested, continuously, by a second power that had eaten an entire four-hundred-strong colony as an incidental cost of moving through.

And the only viable road out of a building with weeks left on its clock ran directly between the two of them.

Somewhere around hour nine, the real shape of the problem finally resolved — not the frightening version he’d been carrying since the ridge, but the accurate one.

It’s not a crossing, he thought. You don’t cross a corridor like that. Sixty of us moving through open ground in three groups is sixty of us noticed, and Thresh was right the first time — being noticed is the entire failure mode. Not being outfought. Being seen at all.

Which meant the question had never been how do we get across.

It had always been the other one, the one he’d been circling since the map without letting himself state it plainly:

What do we have that either of those two would rather have than the trouble of stepping on us?

Nine hours from home, with a colony that owned a cellar it couldn’t feed itself in and a map drawn by a survivor, Sacha could not think of a single answer.

He put the question down carefully — the way you set aside a chart you know you’ll have to read again with clearer eyes — and got his people home first.
