The Roach God

The fold was easier the second time, and Khrr noted the ease with something that was not quite pride and did not have a name in either of the languages it now carried. Muscle remembers a passage after one crossing. The scallop that had cost the colony four days of grinding labor took the three of them under two hours, and Khrr filed the improvement without dwelling on it, because dwelling on progress was a thing the god did and Khrr had never fully understood why.

What waited on the far side of the western gaps was not what any of them expected.

The cellar was gone. Not collapsed — gone, in the specific way a claim goes when nothing holds it anymore: unmarked, unclaimed, the old scent of the colony faded past any reading. Khrr stood in the space that had once been a nursery, then a reporting crawl, then a god’s entire kingdom, and found only cold stone and a silence with no structure in it at all.

Above, distantly, through the fracture mouth they had once climbed a column out of, there was a sound Khrr’s antennae had never learned a category for. Grinding. Continuous. Mechanical in a way that had nothing to do with any living thing.

The building was still standing. The building was also, unmistakably, being taken apart.

Khrr sent the two Cerci to read it properly while it stayed with the ruin of the cellar, because there was a thing here that needed doing and the god was not present to do it.

It found the water heater first — collapsed now, rusted through, no longer even a landmark, just a shape in the dark that had once meant everything. It found the place where the ring had closed around the spider, still faintly readable if a body already knew where to look. It found the duct, flooded, the old wiring finally silent.

It did not have a grammar for what it did next, and did it anyway: it stood in the wreckage of the first thing it had ever helped build, and stayed a while, and did not hurry the staying.

Sacha would have called it grief. Khrr had no word that fit and did not need one. It simply understood, in whatever way understanding worked in a mind a few months old, that a place could stop existing and still be owed something.

They found the rat’s border eight hundred lengths north of where Khrr remembered it, which took an entire day to locate and told its own story before a single word was exchanged.

The line had contracted. Badly. What had once been a confident, wide, layered claim — the kind Sacha had spent two days reading as evidence of an established power — was now a thin, defensive scrawl holding perhaps a third of its former ground, refreshed hastily and in places not refreshed at all.

The rat that came to the new border was thinner than the one Khrr remembered from the open pipe, and Khrr understood, watching it approach, that three years of not answering had finally run out of road.

It read Khrr’s marks — the drill shorthand, translated as best Khrr could manage into a grammar it did not know the rat could parse, and discovered, with something like relief, that it could.

You, the rat sent. The Roach God’s second.

I do not have that word for what I am, Khrr marked, honestly, because honesty was cheaper than a wrong claim at this distance from anyone who could correct it. I carry his authority. I do not know if I carry his name.

Close enough, the rat sent, and something in the way it sent it told Khrr this was not a creature with much appetite left for precision.

Khrr laid the offer whole, the way Sacha had built it — not a favor, a demonstration, an answer carried under ground no census had ever mapped to a side that would never know it had traveled through contested air at all.

The rat did not respond immediately. It sat with the offer the way Khrr had learned, over nineteen days, that older things sat with things: not thinking, exactly, but weighing, the way a body checks a wound before deciding whether it can bear weight on it.

The Ascension came for the western ground six days ago, it sent, finally. Not attacked. Priced. Everything I held that they wanted, they took the approaches to, until what I had left could not feed what I had. I have perhaps ten days before I have nothing left to hold at all.

Then the answer matters now, Khrr sent, not eventually.

Yes. The rat’s ears moved once, and Khrr recognized, without a name for the recognition, something it had watched Sacha do a hundred times:

a creature arriving, all at once, at the end of a decision it had spent years failing to make.

Tell the Mother this. Not the Ascension’s terms. Not a refusal either. Tell her: three years I held because I did not want to belong to anyone. I no longer have three years. I would rather belong to the one who never asked.

That’s the whole message?

That is the whole message, the rat sent. She will understand the rest. She has been waiting considerably longer than I have.

It was there, with the rat’s answer laid whole and ready and three days of hostile, contracting ground between them and home, that Khrr felt something arrive that had never arrived before.

Not scent.

Not touch.

A pressure, thin and strange and unmistakably shaped like a mind reaching, arriving from somewhere Khrr could not point to and yet somehow already knew.

Khrr.

One word.

Barely formed, more felt than received, like a voice heard through a wall thick enough to blur every syllable but not the fact of speaking.

Khrr, if this is working, send something back. Anything. I don’t know what the wrong thing was. I only know I stopped doing it.

Khrr stood very still in the ruin of a cellar that no longer belonged to anyone, holding an old rat’s entire life’s answer, and sent back, with everything it had, into a channel that had not existed an hour ago and now, faintly, impossibly, did.

Here.
