The Roach God

They gave him twenty days.

The emissary laid the terms out over the better part of an afternoon, in the open, with the unhurried thoroughness of an organization that had done this several hundred times and had a form for it.

Sacha listened to all of it, asked seven questions, and did not accept or decline a single clause, which he suspected was itself on a form somewhere.

That was not a threat, and it was not framed as one.

It was, the emissary explained, an offer of terms, and the twenty days was the period in which the terms were available.

The terms were not bad.

That was the part Sacha would come back to for a long while afterward, turning it over at odd hours:

Nobody had tried to frighten him, and the offer on the table was, on any straight reading, better than what he currently had.

Protection from the Mother, which he did not need.

Access to the corridor’s western approaches, which he could not use.

Standing, formally, as an affiliated claim — with the entire weight of a nine-year-old doctrine behind him, and every colony in three sectors knowing exactly whose he was.

And in return: the gaps.

Not the use of them.

The knowledge of them, mapped and handed over, because an organization that couldn’t read what was under his territory would keep coming back until it could.

Why now, Sacha sent, when it had finished. Two months ago you told me you were not interested in my cellar. You were interested in sixty of us standing in a corridor with nowhere to go.

That was accurate then.

And now?

Now you did not stand in a corridor, the emissary sent. You went under it, and came out on the far side of a war we have been unable to cross in nine years, with your young alive.

Its antennae moved once. You will understand that this changes what you are for.

There it was. Not stated as a threat and not needing to be.

And if I decline?

Then in twenty days you are a claim we cannot price, adjacent to ground we are contesting, at a rank that is climbing. The emissary was already turning. We will not attack you. I want to be clear, because I think you will otherwise assume it. We will simply stop treating you as a thing that has time.

Unauthorized usage: this tale is on Amazon without the author’s consent. Report any sightings.

Meaning what, exactly.

It stopped, and came back, and Sacha understood that he had asked the one question the form actually wanted asked.

Meaning we will begin acquiring the ground around you, it sent. Not your ground. The approaches. The water east of the second seep. The four hundred lengths between you and the wet ground’s northern face.

Its antennae moved once. You will not be attacked and you will not be occupied. You will simply find, over a season, that everything you need is inside somebody else’s claim, and that the only remaining route out of that runs through terms that will not be as good as the ones I offered you this afternoon.

And that’s not an attack.

It has never once been called one, the emissary agreed, by anybody who was in a position to call it anything.

He put it to Khrr and Thresh first, in the brick, and got two answers that did not agree.

Take it, Thresh sent, immediately. Twenty days of protection you do not need is twenty days. Then break it.

You do not believe that.

I believe it is what my god would have said, and I want it in the room. The beetle did not move. He took the second offer because being wanted twice felt like standing. I am telling you the argument so that you can see how it looks laid out.

Khrr took longer, and when it laid its answer, it was three lines, and the third one stopped the conversation.

They cannot price us.

That is why they are threatening us.

It is also the only thing we have.

Sacha read that a fourth time.

The terms on the table consisted precisely of handing over the one asset that made the terms necessary.

Sacha called the colony together that night. All of it — sixty-two bodies, the nine young, Thresh, Khrr, Vek. It was the first time he had ever done it.

He laid out the truth in the public grammar, in as much detail as four marks and a drill shorthand could carry, and it took most of the night; he did not soften any of it.

He laid out what the terms were and that they were good.

He laid out what declining meant, in the emissary’s own words, without the reassuring gloss he could easily have put on we will stop treating you as a thing that has time.

He laid out that the price of the good terms was the gaps, that the gaps were why anyone was talking to them at all, and that he did not know how to hold both.

He was aware, laying it, of exactly how much of this a colony of roaches could not possibly follow — the politics of a nine-year-old doctrine, the mechanics of pricing a claim, an offer of protection from a dynasty they had never met.

He laid it anyway, all of it.

The last time he had asked his people to accept something without explanation, it had cost him an eleven-day-old.

Then he did the thing he had been building toward since a Cerci block corrected his spacing in a fracture two thousand lengths west of here, and it was still the hardest single act of his second life.

He laid the question, and he did not lay an answer under it.

WE HAVE TWENTY DAYS. I DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO.

Nobody moved.

He had expected that, and had braced for the third chamber — for the stillness of sixty-two subjects handed something they had no framework for.

He waited it out.

There was nothing else available.

Then Vek came forward, and marked a line, and it was the first sentence anybody in that colony had ever addressed to the whole of it rather than to him.

THEN WE FIND OUT WHAT WE ARE FOR.

It was not a plan.

Sacha knew that better than anyone standing there; it did not tell him what to do about twenty days or a doctrine nine years old or a hole under his territory that two powers wanted mapped.

But sixty bodies read it, and the reading moved through the assembly the way the four marks had moved through a working shift six weeks ago — not as an order propagating, but as a thing arriving in sixty places at once and staying there.

[Sanctuary: internal cohesion — rising.

Faith: rising.]

Sacha stood at the back of his own colony, at the fourth echelon, with twenty days on a clock somebody else was holding, and understood that he had just watched his people do the one thing he had never been able to teach them.

They had answered somebody who was not him.
