I Became The Chief Of A Primitive Village

Chapter 1089, The Right Person for the Job

Gang Guo and Tan finished speaking their declarations and stood exactly where they were, their expressions unchanged.

They had already resolved from the heart to give everything for the Flame Dragon Tribe. They had already begun to look forward to what lay ahead.

“Besides training each day, there are other tasks I intend to give you.” Su Bai said, without much warning.

“Shaman, please instruct us. Whatever lies within our ability, we will do with everything we have.” Gang Guo answered without hesitation.

He felt that as long as he had work in the Flame Dragon Tribe, it was enough. He would accept whatever work came.

In the days Gang Guo had spent in the Flame Dragon Tribe, he had come to understand clearly: work was what got you food, shelter, and clothing.

No work meant none of those things. So, he was grateful enough.

Once he had work, he could put down real roots in the Flame Dragon Tribe with ease.

As for what the work was, Gang Guo did not care much. Work in exchange for the Flame Dragon Tribe’s food was plenty. The food here was very good, after all.

“As long as there is work, I am content. Shaman, we are not that particular about these things.” Tan’s thoughts ran in exactly the same direction.

“There is a role that involves leading soldiers to handle civil disputes within the Tribe.” Su Bai sat up straight and looked at Gang Guo, continuing: “You would take the position of Deputy Leader, responsible for managing those soldiers, and for teaching them your sharp powers of observation.”

In the time before he had set out, he had already established the Police Department in the Tribe.

The Leader of the Police Department was Qing Yan. But Qing Yan had a lot of other responsibilities. The person in charge of guarding the Central Market had gone to other Tribes to negotiate.

That left the soldiers in the Police Department with very little oversight. What was needed at this point was a Deputy Leader.

Su Bai had heard that Gang Guo’s skills in observation and perception were exceptionally strong, both when it came to situations and to people.

The position had come to him immediately. And Gang Guo was genuinely suited to it.

“Shaman, what is the Police Department? And what does Deputy Leader mean?” Gang Guo made clear he had no idea.

He was hearing many unfamiliar words for the first time. But the prospect of having work made him quite happy.

“The Police Department is a department the Tribe established some time ago. The people in it are not Totem Warriors. They are all ordinary people, but they are far more capable than ordinary people…”

Su Bai gave a general explanation of the Police Department, then said: “Deputy Leader means second leader. Do you think this role suits you?”

“Handling civil disputes within the Tribe, and teaching the soldiers my skills in observation…” Gang Guo began to think it over carefully, sorting through the meaning of it all.

He thought for a good while, then looked up. His expression turned serious again. “Shaman, this role does suit me. But is the position of Deputy Leader not too senior for me?”

Gang Guo was pleased to have work, but he was genuinely concerned.

The position he was being given was simply too high. He had only just declared himself no longer of the Dark Scorpion Tribe moments ago.

He was of the Flame Dragon Tribe now, but it had not been long at all. To be handed such a fine position so suddenly was, truly, a little overwhelming.

“The position I am giving you is indeed quite high. So, you must not disappoint my expectations. You must manage the Police Department well.” Su Bai said it in earnest.

Was the position he was giving this man high? Of course it was. The man had come from another Tribe, after all.

To join the Flame Dragon Tribe and immediately become someone of standing was treatment that was extremely generous.

“Yes, Shaman. I will use every bit of ability I have to manage this Department well. I will not let the Shaman down.” Gang Guo’s voice grew animated.

His hands clenched tightly at his sides. Not for any particular reason. He was simply very moved.

It felt as though he had been recognized in an instant.

“If you do well, becoming the Leader of the Police Department is not out of the question. But first you must do the work well.”

Su Bai leaned back in his chair and continued: “On the other hand, if you do not perform, do not blame me for disciplining you.”

He had no doubt about the man’s ability, so he was not worried Gang Guo would fail. What he was wary of was complacency.

The position he was starting at, after all, was Deputy Leader of the Police Department. It was easy for anyone to let that go to their head.

“I will absolutely not let the Shaman down. Shaman, trust the Police Department to me. There is only one thing I am still concerned about.” Gang Guo’s expression shifted slightly.

“Speak freely.” Su Bai raised a hand.

“I was, until just now, a man of the Dark Scorpion Tribe. Now I have become a man of the Flame Dragon Tribe, and I have been given a position this good. Will the people of the Tribe not resent it?”

Gang Guo was not without some knowledge of how people worked. He had only just entered this Tribe.

“You need not worry about that. In the Flame Dragon Tribe, ability does the talking. If they are not convinced, they will speak with their strength. You only need to prove yourself with your own capability.”

Su Bai’s brow lifted slightly. “And the people you will be managing are only soldiers. Their ability is naturally not equal to that of Totem Warriors. But there is one thing you must be clear on from the start.”

“Please say it, Shaman.” Gang Guo stood straight in an instant.

“When you arrive at the Police Department, you must make your position clear. That is, you are the Deputy Leader, and they are to be told that their Leader is and always will be Qing Yan.”

Su Bai leaned forward, fingers laced together. “And you are to tell them that you are there to teach them. If you do that, they will have no objections.”

He had not failed to consider what Gang Guo was worried about. These instructions were the result of that consideration.

As for others having thoughts about someone receiving such a high position so quickly, that did not concern him.

Even if the Totem Warriors had thoughts, those thoughts would need to be backed by ability.

That was the way of the primitive era. Strength was the only real authority. So those people would have nothing to say.

Su Bai had said so before, and he had said it to all the Totem Warriors: as long as they had ability, the Tribe would not fail to see it.

If you had ability, the Tribe would promote you. And if you had ability, the Tribe would not judge you by your origins.

That meant it did not matter whether you were a Wanderer or someone from another Tribe. Let the capable one take the position.

“I understand.” Gang Guo’s expression became solemn once more.

“Shaman, what will my work be?” Tan grew anxious in an instant. He very much wanted to know his own task.

“There is a farming fields outside the Tribe. You will be stationed there.” Su Bai said.

He had been uncertain about who to send to guard the High Tower, for want of someone with sufficient strength.

Now, as it happened, two Mid-Stage Totem Warriors had come to the Flame Dragon Tribe at once. He could send one of them.

“Yes.” Tan did not know the specifics of the work. But he was happy all the same.
