I Became The Chief Of A Primitive Village

Chapter 1015, The Completely Bewildered Yu Ying

Su Bai checked in as usual every morning. What he obtained today was a bag of soybeans.

He instantly became alert, looking with satisfaction at that bag full of soybeans.

The soybeans were extremely plump, looking very appetising.

*Knock knock knock…* Knocking sounds continuously rang out. Yu Ying came as usual to knock on the door and call Su Bai for breakfast.

“Coming.” Su Bai changed his clothes, brought the soybeans to the dining area, and casually placed the soybeans on the table surface.

“Shaman, what is this?” Yu Ying’s pink eyes kept looking at the soybeans.

From time to time she would poke that bag of soybeans with her hand. Her entire being was filled with curiosity.

“This is called soybeans. They’re very useful ingredients. I believe you’ll love them.” Su Bai had just finished brushing his teeth.

“Soybeans? So this thing is called soybeans! Can they be used to make food?” Yu Ying’s soft, cute voice rang out.

“Of course. Soybeans can be used to make many delicious things. For example, tofu, bean sprouts, dried bean curd sticks, soy milk, fermented bean curd, soybean paste, and so on. Every single one is a delicacy of the world.”

Just thinking about it made Su Bai somewhat hungry. He truly hadn’t eaten these foods for a very long time.

Take soy milk for instance. This was a breakfast staple every morning. Many people would drink soy milk for breakfast, paired with a dough stick. How comfortable that was. Dried bean curd sticks needed no additional mention. They could be used to make braised bean curd with beef brisket, or used to stir-fry with pork belly. Both were delicious.

Bean sprouts were also one of the very nutritious ingredients. Sometimes when cooking noodles, adding them in gave a distinctive fresh fragrance.

Fermented bean curd could be said to be an excellent accompaniment for congee. Having a piece when drinking congee was really refreshing. Some people even used it as hotpot sauce.

Tofu was also one of the ingredients every household would stock. Things like mapo tofu, stuffed tofu, and so on were all household-name delicacies.

Soybean paste was just one of the seasonings. Using it to stir-fry water spinach was also a signature delicacy.

This was also why Su Bai was so happy after obtaining soybeans from the System.

The foods that could be made from soybeans were simply too numerous. If they could be widely cultivated, they could definitely enrich the Flame Dragon Tribe’s menu.

Although they now had tomatoes, chillies, sweet potatoes, and potatoes, the delicacies that could be made came and went with just those few varieties.

At most, sweet potatoes and potatoes could be made into sweet potato starch and potato starch. This way, when making noodles, eating them would be more refreshing.

But ultimately, they were all staple foods. Compared with soybeans, the variety of things that could be made was far less.

However, sweet potatoes and potatoes were also indispensable ingredients. After all, they were excellent food reserves.

“I’ve never heard of any of them, but if Shaman says they’re delicious, they must be delicious.” Yu Ying had no doubts.

Yu Ying could be said to trust Su Bai’s words unconditionally, because up until now he had never deceived her.

“After I finish breakfast and perform my Shaman Technique on them, they can be taken for planting.” Su Bai said while eating breakfast.

Yu Ying nodded heavily to show she had remembered, asking, “Shaman, should they just be placed in the ground as usual?”

“Actually, when planting soybeans, you should sun-dry the soybean seeds under sunlight. But right now there’s no Sun. After I perform the Shaman Technique, it will be the same.” Su Bai picked up a soybean. “First, you need to apply base fertiliser to ensure fertility. Using the farmyard manure we composted before will be fine.”

“En.” Yu Ying kept nodding, her mind rapidly remembering Su Bai’s words.

“Have them use the direct seeding method to sow the soybean seeds into holes. They just need to make long furrows.”

Su Bai recalled the school experiment and continued, “After the soybeans grow, they need to be transplanted.”

When he had been studying at school before, he had participated in an experimental group. The experimental group’s topic had been growing soybeans.

This was also why he now knew how to grow soybeans and could explain it so clearly.

“During transplanting, wait until the bean seedlings grow to five centimetres before transplanting. The transplanting spacing should be 30-50 centimetres. I made you measuring tools before. You can use the measuring tools to measure.”

Su Bai was very serious. “After transplanting, water them once to ensure survival rate. Seven days later, if any dead seedlings appear, you need to replant. At this time, you can apply farmyard manure again, applied five centimetres to the side and below the seeds.”

When he spoke these words, his tone was especially slow. The purpose was to let Yu Ying remember clearly.

After all, the other was encountering soybean planting for the first time. If he spoke too quickly, she definitely couldn’t remember.

“I’ve remembered most of it. Shaman, is there anything else to pay attention to?” Yu Ying asked very seriously.

“Also, after the soybean seedlings are planted, water the field once. Try to water every plant. Then seven days later, thin out or replant seedlings in the field.”

Once Su Bai started talking about something he was good at, he became eloquent. “The timing for the second fertilisation is when the soybeans flower and form pods.”

“Shaman, what are pods?” Yu Ying heard a completely unfamiliar term.

“It’s just like how tomatoes flower and before long become small tomatoes.” Su Bai explained simply and directly.

“I see. Now I understand.” Yu Ying nodded thoughtfully.

“When soybeans form pods, it’s a critical period in the soybean’s growth. To make the pods plump, you can add more farmyard manure.”

Because Su Bai had spoken so much, he paused to drink some water. “When the seedlings are about ten centimetres tall, perform the second cultivation. You must not damage the seedlings or press on them. Understand?”

“I sort of understand.” Yu Ying was somewhat bewildered. She had not expected this one tiny soybean to be so troublesome. Yu Ying began to worry, feeling she might possibly kill them off.

“Don’t worry too much. In a moment I’ll go through it with you again in detail. Right now I’m just giving you an overview.” Su Bai comforted her.

He completely understood the other’s thoughts. When he had been doing this topic at school, he had also felt somewhat unwilling to grow soybeans.

He had felt it was really too troublesome. It would be better to just soak the soybeans directly in water and wait for them to sprout to eat bean sprouts.

“That’s good! Else, I’d really be too worried.” Yu Ying breathed a sigh of relief upon hearing this.

“Also, during the soybean flowering and pod formation period, diseases easily occur. To avoid reducing yield, you need to take protective measures to preserve flowers and pods.” Su Bai thought about how this world had no pesticides. “We can only have people watch more carefully. If there are insects, promptly clear away the insects.”

When there were no pesticides, this was the most primitive method.

“I understand. It’s the same as picking off insects from the cabbage.” Yu Ying finally understood something.

Yu Ying’s facial expression appeared half-smiling, clearly very nervous inside.
