Chapter 464: Distant Relatives

Madam Han patted her daughter’s hand gently and explained, “Mingzhu, their dishes truly possess medicinal properties.”

“After eating them, Mother no longer feels as tired as before. Even Mother’s prolonged headaches have lessened by more than half.”

When she heard this, Han Mingzhu was taken aback. “Is that true? Why didn’t I feel anything?”

“You are young and healthy, so you might not notice the difference.”

Seeing that her mother was serious, Han Mingzhu finally stopped complaining. “We won’t eat here next time. The prices are no different from robbery.”

Madam Han smiled at her daughter’s words and coaxed her, “Okay, don’t be angry anymore.”

Despite their unhappiness, Yu Feng Pavilion’s business was as good as ever.

After they left Yu Feng Pavilion, Madam Han and her entourage left Zhu’an Town and went to the General’s Mansion.

40 minutes later, their horse carriages were parked near the General’s Mansion’s gate.

The nanny got out of the carriage and walked to the side gate. She knocked on the gate and waited for a while.

When the gate was opened, a middle-aged guard sized her up before asking, “Who are you?”

The nanny didn’t dare to be arrogant and smiled. “Greetings, Sir. I’m the nanny from the Han family, the maternal family of the General’s wife. My Madam and Third Young Miss came from Huang He City to pay a visit to the Madam.”

The guard had never heard of the Han family, so he couldn’t trust the nanny’s words.

“Wait here. I will inform the Steward.”

“Thank you, Sir,” the nanny nodded.

After the guard closed the gate, he went to find Steward Han.

At this moment, Steward Han was busy checking the account books sent by the stores’ managers in his small study room.

When the guard walked in, he had just finished calculating the expenses needed to build the workshops owned by Lei Feng.

“Greetings, Steward Han,” the guard said as he cupped his fists.

Steward Han put his brush down and looked at him. “What is it?”

“Steward Han, there is a woman who claims to be a nanny from the Han family of Huang He City, the maternal family of the Lady. She came with her Madam and Third Young Miss to visit the Lady.”

The news of their Lord being bestowed with the title of Marquis of Zhongyong had been sent back. So, everyone in the General’s Mansion already knew about this matter and changed their form of address for Lu Qianxuan and Xue Ya’er.

Steward Han frowned when he heard the guard’s words and said, “I never heard that the Lady had a relative with the surname Han.”

Before the Lady married the Marquis, they had investigated her family thoroughly, including the so-called distant relatives. But among all those big and small families, there was none with the surname Han.

With this thought, Steward Han said, “The Lady is not here, and we don’t know if they are really relatives or scammers. Just send them away.”

The guard received the order and left.

The nanny had been waiting for half an hour before the side gate was opened. When she saw the guard, she asked, “Sir, the weather is too hot nowadays. Can we go in now?”

“My apologies, the Lady is not at home, and it’s inconvenient for us servants to make the decision. Please come back another day.”

When the nanny heard this, she was taken aback. “Sir, may I ask when the Madam will come back?”

“I’m just a guard. I don’t know the Master’s arrangements.” After he finished his words, the guard closed the gate.

Being locked outside, the nanny was dumbfounded.

Even in an ordinary, wealthy family, the servants knew how to welcome guests and offer them a cup of tea at least. She never expected that the servants in the General’s Mansion would be so rude as to not even give them a cup of tea.

Although she was angry, the nanny couldn’t do anything about it. In the end, she could only walk to the carriage and report everything to Madam Han.

Seeing that her nanny had finally returned, Madam Han asked, “Nanny, how is it?”

The nanny didn’t dare to hide anything and retold the entire conversation she had with the guard.

After hearing this, Han Mingzhu threw the teacup she was holding and said, “I knew it. Xue Ya’er won’t let me enter the mansion easily. She has always been jealous of me!”

Madam Han understood that they couldn’t force this matter and said, “Let’s go back to town and find a place to rest first.”

“Yes, Madam.”

As the entourage returned to Zhu’an Town, Han Mingzhu threw herself into her mother’s arms and whined.

“Mother, you must help me. Xue Ya’er has been married to Brother Qianxuan for more than 5 years, but has been unable to bear an heir for him.”

“As the legal wife, it’s her duty to take in another woman for her husband to continue the family’s lineage. But she is so jealous and wants to keep Brother Qianxuan for herself. She is unworthy of Brother Qianxuan!”

Madam Han was unwilling to let her daughter become a concubine. No matter how pampered a concubine was, she was still a servant and couldn’t appear in public openly.

As the legitimate daughter of the Han family, how could she become a concubine?

Even though the Han family was not as wealthy as the Xue family, they had produced 2 scholars who now worked as 9th-rank officials.

In terms of status, they were above the Xue family, who were a family of merchants. So, it was only right for her daughter to become the second wife instead of a concubine.

With this thought, she patted her daughter’s back gently and said, “Don’t worry. With Mother here, no one can bully you.”

When she heard her mother’s words, Han Mingzhu smiled. “Mother, you are so good to me!”

Madam Han tapped her daughter’s forehead lightly and chuckled. “You are my only daughter. If I’m not good to you, who else should I be good to?”

Satisfied with her mother’s words, Han Mingzhu stopped whining and discussed their next plan with her mother.
