Chapter 407: Visiting The Northeast City ( 4 )

Yao Zhi nodded when she heard Yan Shu’s words and took out her black iron token. She showed the front side of the token to him and hid the name carved on the back side.

”This is my family’s token.”

Yan Shu didn’t know about the Nuwa Clan, but when he gazed at the token, a small formation inside the patterns lit up for a split second. When he took a closer look, he saw the surname Lei carved on it.

Yao Zhi didn’t know if she could prove her identity with this token and was taking a gamble. After all, this was the token of the Nuwa Clan. Not many people knew what it looked like.

While she was still thinking about her next plan if she failed to enter the city openly, she heard Yan Shu say, ”Young Master Lei, thank you for your cooperation. Please follow me.”

Although she didn’t know what had happened, Yao Zhi was delighted. She put the token back into her system’s storage and followed Yan Shu into the city.

Ling Shi’er and his brothers followed closely while observing their surroundings.

When Yao Zhi and her guards entered the city, she was shocked to see the damage to the city.

Not only were the roads damaged and full of holes, but even the buildings had been burned down. Among the many buildings along the roadside, fewer than 10 remained intact.

Dried blood stained the roads and walls. Pieces of rotten flesh were visible inside the cracks in the ground. The rancid stench was so nauseating that her face turned pale.

At this moment, the only thought in her mind was that the destruction caused by war was no less than the damage brought by the apocalypse she had read about in novels before.

She was so focused on the situation around her that she didn’t even realize when the soldiers left. Right now, only Yan Shu was leading the group to Lu Qianxuan’s temporary residence.

Along the way, she saw emaciated women, children, and elderly people washing away the blood and picking up rotten flesh from the roads and walls. She also saw several disabled men helping rebuild the roads.

When they finally arrived at the two-gate courtyard, Yao Zhi already had a rough understanding of the city’s situation.

Yan Shu talked to the guards standing at the entrance for a moment before he gestured to her and said, ”Young Master Lei, this is the General’s temporary residence. I still have matters to attend to, so I won’t go inside with you.”

Yao Zhi cupped her fists and said, ”Thank you for leading the way, Centurion Yan.”

Yan Shu watched them enter the residence before he turned and left. He still had to oversee the people repairing the city wall.

Inside the residence, Lu Qianxuan and Xue Ya’er had already received the news about Lei Feng’s arrival. Both of them were full of doubts, but still had their people prepare tea and refreshments.

Just after Xue Ya’er ordered the maidservant she had newly hired to clean up several guest rooms, a maidservant came to the backyard’s main hall and curtsied to them.

”Greetings, General, Madam. Young Master Lei and his guards have already arrived. They are currently waiting in the main hall.”

Lu Qianxuan stood up and said, ”I know.”

He waited for his wife and went to the front yard’s main hall together.

When they entered the main hall, Yao Zhi had just taken a sip of her tea. Seeing them, she stood up, cupped her fists, and smiled. ”Greetings, General. Greetings, Madam.”

Lu Qianxuan and Xue Ya’er returned her greetings and gestured for her to take a seat. ”Young Master Lei, please have a seat.”

After everyone was seated, Lu Qianxuan finally asked, ”Young Master Lei, what brought you here so suddenly?”

”General, I received the news of your victory a few days ago and came to take a look,” Yao Zhi replied with a smile.

Hearing this, both Lu Qianxuan and Xue Ya’er were taken aback.

They never expected her to learn about their victory so quickly. Even the Imperial Court hadn’t learned about this matter yet, since the memorial needed at least half a month to arrive in the Capital at the fastest.

After a moment, they regained their composure, and Lu Qianxuan said, ”Young Master Lei, this victory was thanks to your family’s help. Without the divine weapons, it wouldn’t have been easy for us to reclaim the city.”

Yao Zhi drank her tea again before replying calmly, ”General, this victory has nothing to do with my Lei family. The divine weapons were bought by you and the Xie family.”

”Since you paid the money, it’s only natural for my family to deliver the goods. In the end, it was nothing more than a business transaction.”

When she finished speaking, both Lu Qianxuan and Xue Ya’er understood her meaning. The Lei family didn’t want to get involved in the Imperial Court’s matters, so they wanted to hide their involvement.

Understanding her intention, Lu Qianxuan let out a chuckle and changed the topic.

”Young Master Lei, due to the war, the city was damaged, and the people were displaced. There is nothing for you to see here. It’s best for you to leave early in case a plague breaks out in the future.”

Yao Zhi understood the danger before she decided to come here.

With so many corpses and mutilated body parts scattered all over the city, the risk of plague was high. Added to the hot temperature, the corpses would rot faster.

While the soldiers could burn the corpses, the problem was the pieces of rotten flesh scattered everywhere. The lack of water also made it hard to maintain hygiene and clean the city.

”General, my visit this time is not for leisure.”

Raising his eyebrows, Lu Qianxuan asked doubtfully, ”If it’s not for leisure, then what is your purpose, Young Master Lei?”

”This time, I came under my father’s orders to help the people rebuild their houses and lands.”
