Chapter 4043: Farewell

Editor: Henyee Translations

Now that he was gone, this proved that he was a soldier—an upright soldier.

Ye Jian wanted to speak up for Uncle Chen and tell everyone that this principal of a middle school and the quiet librarian of the provincial senior high library… was not an ordinary person. He was a soldier who had made countless contributions.

Being covered with the flag was a recognition of Uncle Chen’s identity. Ye Jian must personally cover Principal Chen with the flag.

No one would know about his great achievements, but this flag was a recognition of his life. These were footprints in history that would never disappear.

The bright red flag covered Principal Chen’s body bit by bit.

...
“Salute!”

A deep and powerful voice sounded in the ward. Everyone, including Officer Lu and Zhou Niannian, saluted this soldier who was loyal to the country.

After this farewell, he would not be returning.

Ye Jian, who was standing in front, looked at Uncle Chen, who was covered by the flag. She had nowhere to vent her anger, but she wasn’t defeated.

In the face of the cruelest truth, she was like a blade of grass that grew from a crack in the rock. No matter how hard others tried to stop her, she would still hold her head high and rely on her own strength to survive.

They didn’t hold a memorial service for Principal Chen. In the end, he was cremated into ashes and was placed in a small box. Ye Jian, who hadn’t slept the entire night, hugged the box and said to Commander Xia, who hadn’t slept the entire night either, “Dad, I want to bring Uncle Chen back to the Southern Province. I want Principal Chen and Grandpa Gen to be buried together. I want to return to the Southern Province today…”

Uncle Chen had stayed in the Southern Province for the longest. The Southern Province was also Uncle Chen’s home. She wanted to bring Uncle Chen home.

Looking at Ye Jian, whose eyes were bloodshot, Commander Xia told Ye Jian what Principal Chen had said before. He told her that Principal Chen’s comrades were in the Yellow River and he wanted to be with them.

“This was his last wish. It wasn’t a casual mention. Little Ye, send your Uncle Chen to reunite with his comrades.”

Ye Jian’s heart trembled. She asked, “Can’t I bring Uncle Chen back to the sniper base where he was when he was alive? Can’t I?”

“Child, he just wants to depart alone. He doesn’t want too many people to send him off. I asked him before, and he told me that he has been through too many separations in his life. He knows that it’s not a good feeling. That’s why he doesn’t want others to know that he’s gone.

“I know you want to bring him back to the sniper base and let him see the military unit he was in when he was alive. However, child, let him leave quietly. He can leave cleanly without any worries.”

Ye Jian stood alone for a long time. Her lips were trembling. In the end, she nodded gently.

Commander Xia knew that Principal Chen had once scattered the ashes of his comrades in the Yellow River. There were a total of four martyrs. Principal Chen remained concerned about the company commander, squad leader, and his last two comrades before he retired. Principal Chen stood at the same place at different times to scatter his comrades’ ashes.

On the day Ye Jian departed, it was drizzling when the plane took off. Holding a small box in her hand, Ye Jian boarded the plane in the drizzle.

Accompanying her was the leader of the sniper base, the leader of the provincial military district, Commissar Yan, and four guards. Commander Xia didn’t go with them. As the commander-in-chief, he had many things to do. He also had a few urgent matters to deal with. After sending Ye Jian on the plane, he immediately took another plane to the border.
