The other side of Reincarnation

Doran had us moving differently within a day of the scout――not fleeing exactly, but something more deliberate.

　Patterns broken on purpose.

The kind of movement that only made sense if you already assumed someone skilled was trying to predict you.

”Double back at the fork tomorrow,” he said, mapping it out with a stick in the dirt rather than risking parchment someone might later find. ”Then cut north instead of the road. Slower, rougher terrain, but harder to track cleanly.”

”You’ve done this before,” I said.

　Not really a question anymore.

”Once or twice,” he said, which was as much as he was willing to give, and which I’d long since learned to accept without pushing further.

Whatever taught him this, I’m grateful for it tonight.

Doesn’t mean I’m not still curious.

Just means tonight isn’t the night for curiosity.

The next several days felt like something out of an entirely different kind of story――careful, quiet, deliberately unpredictable.

We slept in shifts properly for the first time in years.

　Someone always awake.

Always watching the treeline, the way Doran always had out of habit and the rest of us now did out of necessity.

Fenrik’s nose turned out to be more useful than any of us had really tapped into before.

”Nothing,” he said more than once, after circling a camp perimeter at dawn. ”No scent that doesn’t belong. No fire smoke on the wind that isn’t ours.”

”That’s good,” I said.

”That’s good for now,” he corrected. ”Doesn’t mean it stays that way.”

　Fair correction.

I’ve learned not to trust ”good for now” as far as ”good, period,” lately.

By the fourth day of careful, evasive movement, something in the tension actually started to ease.

　Not gone.

　Just quieter.

The specific relief of a held breath finally starting to let out.

”No more fires that shouldn’t be there,” Doran reported, returning from a scouting circuit of our own. ”No tracks. No sense of eyes anywhere close, and I’ve gotten decent at telling when there are.”

”You think we lost them?” Fenrik asked, something almost hopeful in his voice.

”Think’s the operative word,” Doran said, careful even now not to promise more certainty than he actually had. ”Could mean we lost them. Could mean whoever this is got better at not being found. I’d rather stay cautious a while longer before we call this won.”

　Sensible, as always.

Doesn’t stop the hope from creeping in anyway, though.

I’ll admit that much to myself, even if I won’t say it out loud.

We allowed ourselves, cautiously, a little more ease over the following days――not carelessness, never quite that again, but something closer to the rhythm we’d had before the scout, before the strangers’ too-knowing stares.

Fenrik cracked a joke that actually landed.

Doran let his guard down enough to laugh at it, genuinely, in a way that had been rarer than usual the past few weeks.

”Feels almost normal again,” Fenrik said one evening, stretching out by a fire built with slightly less caution than the nights before it.

”Almost,” I agreed.

I want to believe ”almost” is enough.

I want to believe we actually did lose them, that patience ran out on their end before it ran out on ours.

　I don’t fully believe it.

But I let myself enjoy the evening anyway, because some nights, that’s the only choice that doesn’t cost you everything twice over――once to the threat, and once more to the fear of it, even when the threat’s not actually there anymore.

We made camp that night in a wide, open clearing――Doran’s choice, good sightlines, nothing hidden in any direction we could see.

It felt, for the first time in weeks, almost safe.

I should have known better than to trust that feeling completely.

Some part of me, I think, already did.
