The other side of Reincarnation

They tell you your life flashes before your eyes when you die. They lie.

There was no montage of childhood memories, no slideshow of regrets. There was only a blinding shock of heat, followed instantly by a freezing, numbing cold that swallowed my limbs whole. My world didn’t end with some profound realization. It ended with pure, suffocating physical disorientation.

Huh. So this is what dying feels like.

I couldn’t draw a proper breath. Every attempt felt like sucking air through a crushed straw, bringing up only the thick, metallic taste of blood at the back of my throat. I knew I was lying on pavement — I could feel the rough asphalt scraping my cheek — but I had zero context for why. The panic came first, loud and overwhelming, long before any actual facts caught up.

Then came the sound. Footsteps — heavy, measured, entirely unhurried. Nearby, a car door stood wide open, its warning chime dinging into the quiet night.

Kaede’s safe, at least. That’s something.

That steady, calm pace was the wrongest part of all. Someone who’d just stumbled onto a dying man would be running, screaming. Whoever this was, they weren’t panicking.

Which meant they’d expected this.

A girl’s voice drifted down to me, shaking — not with grief, I understood dimly, but with a shock that hadn’t caught up yet to what it had just watched happen. ”Kenji... you could have hit me too.”

”Nah, don’t worry.” His tone wasn’t just calm. It carried a faint, sick trace of pride. ”I had the angle perfectly calculated.”

Calculated.

The word rattled against my fading consciousness. It didn’t fit. Nobody talks about angles during a random, tragic hit-and-run. I knew the name Kenji — it sat right on the tip of my mind, a name I should know intimately — but the connection frayed before I could pull it in.

Before I could finish the thought, the world cut to black.

Six hours earlier, my life was entirely unremarkable.

The blare of my ringtone shattered the quiet of my apartment mid-raid. I cursed under my breath, dropping my controller — but the caller ID gave me pause.

”Yo, Haruto.” Kenji’s voice boomed through the speaker the second I picked up. ”Change of plans tonight. You in on a double date? Kaede and I are meeting up with a friend of hers — we need a fourth.”

My gut reaction was to make an excuse and sink back into my chair. I was a homebody, comfortable in my isolation. But looking at the glow of the monitor, a sudden wave of loneliness hit me. I didn’t want to just be the punchline — the guy who never leaves his room.

”Yeah,” I said, clearing my throat. ”Alright. Count me in.”

I spent the next forty-five minutes over-deliberating my outfit before settling on something I hoped read as effortlessly casual. I even left early, arriving ten minutes ahead of schedule, chest tight with awkward, hopeful energy.

When Kenji and Kaede arrived, they brought the fourth: a girl named Hana.

The moment we were introduced, real hope flared in my chest. Hana was pretty, quiet, reserved. But almost immediately the signal shifted — a brief hesitation in her smile when our eyes met. Not malicious. Just the strained, polite mask of someone being nice when she wasn’t particularly interested.

Yep. Already rejected. Called it.

The afternoon dragged into evening and the date fizzled out entirely naturally — no drama, no argument, just two people who clearly didn’t click. In a strange way the lack of sparks was reassuring; it ruled out any sudden, chaotic jealousy later. We were just mismatched puzzle pieces.

As night fell, Kenji and Kaede smoothly peeled off, claiming an errand to run, leaving me to walk Hana home alone. At the time it felt like a wingman move, giving us space.

In hindsight, it was the isolation beat. I’d been perfectly engineered into position.

We walked in near silence until we reached the quiet, dim residential street near her apartment.

”Hey, Haruto?” She stopped, looking up with a soft, apologetic expression. ”I’m sorry about today. The setup — it was a bit forced, wasn’t it?”

I rubbed the back of my neck, laughing it off. ”A little. Don’t worry about it.”

”I’d still like to be friends, though. If that’s okay?”

”Yeah,” I said, feeling something in my chest unclench that I hadn’t noticed clenching. ”I’d like that too.”

It was a brief, gentle moment of real connection. It was taken from me a fraction of a second later.

The roar of an engine tore through the quiet street. Headlights blinded us off the wet asphalt. The car slowed slightly, like it meant to pass safely by — false relief — then the engine screamed as the driver slammed the accelerator, surging straight for the sidewalk.

Instinct moved before thought could. I shoved Hana clear of its path.

Then the impact. The heat, the cold, the suffocating inability to breathe.

I was right back where I started — on the ground, tasting blood, listening to that open door chime.

”Kenji... you could have hit me too.”

”Nah, don’t worry. I had the angle perfectly calculated.”

Hearing it again, with the last six hours fresh in my mind, the pieces slammed together with violent clarity. The date’s natural fizzle. Kenji steering us apart. The car slowing, then surging. This wasn’t an accident.

It was an execution.

And in that final, fading second, the true motive pierced the fog. Kenji didn’t care about Hana. He didn’t care about the double date. He knew about my account — the one with three years of trades in it, worth more money than he’d made in his life, under a name none of my friends had ever bothered to ask about. Why would they. Why would the guy who never left his room have anything worth taking.

He knew. That’s the whole reason.

Some friend you turned out to be.

The betrayal burned hotter than the pain — one last, searing flash of rage — and then my consciousness tore completely away from the pavement.

There was no floating in the void. No meeting with a god. Just darkness, total and absolute, and then, nothing at all.

Part One — A Brand New Day

Wait. Hold on. Am I still alive?

I hadn’t expected to think anything ever again, and yet here I was, thinking, with a body that didn’t feel like mine and lungs that worked in a way I didn’t remember teaching them.

Okay. Let’s try opening my eyes.

Light. Blurred shapes. None of it looked like Japan, and — more to the point — none of it looked like a hospital, or a morgue, or anywhere a dead man had any business being.

I tried to say something. Anything.

RRRRRHHHHHHH—

...What. What was that. Was that me?

I tried again, mostly out of denial.

RRRRRHHHHHHH—

Oh my god. Okay. Hold on. Was I — reincarnated?

It felt like a stupid thing to believe. It felt stupider to keep hearing myself make that sound and not believe it.

”Hey — I think he’s awake,” a voice said, somewhere close, layered with something that didn’t sound entirely human.

”Really? Let me see him.”

Are those— are those my parents? Wait, why am I already calling them that.

A face leaned in above me — scaled, sharp-eyed, radiating a presence that made every nerve I had left stand up at once.

”Hey, son. How are you doing?”

...Yeah. Okay. I’m going to have to just accept this.

I was reincarnated. Into another world. Please, PLEASE let this one have fewer people like Kenji in it.

...Who am I kidding.

As best as I could piece together, my mother was a dragon. My father was something he never quite explained to my satisfaction, from a race called the demi-humans — beastkin, more precisely — which made me some kind of hybrid of the two. It took me embarrassingly long to accept that sentence as true, but she was my mother, scales and all, so I didn’t have much choice.

I was five before I could properly walk and talk, and I privately thought that was a pretty good turnaround, all things considered.

My mother told me, most nights before I slept, about the world I’d landed in. Seven races shared it: dragons, elves, humans, demons, demi-humans, spirits, and beastkin. And above all of them, she said, stood the gods.

”Are there multiple gods here?” I asked her once.

”Yes, dear. Several.”

”Why more than one?”

”Because they each represent something different.”

”Represent what?”

”Power.”

Something cold ran down my spine at that word. ”What kind of power?”

”The God of Creation. The God of Destruction. The God of Chaos. The God of War. The God of Life. The God of Time. The God of Blessings.”

Right. This world is exactly as messed up as I feared.

My father was rarely home — busy with something my mother never fully explained either — so it was mostly her who raised me, who trained me, who taught me the basics of combat and the fundamentals of magic long before I thought I was ready for either.

There was mana, and there was something past it called anti-mana. Mana was the common current running through everything — every spell, every minor working, colored gold no matter who wielded it, and hard-capped in how far it could reach. Anti-mana was different: rarer, stronger, and — as my mother put it — practically a birthright for dragons, along with demons and a handful of other high-tier beings, thanks to whatever I’d inherited from her side.

Anti-mana came in colors too. Blue marked a beginner. Purple, someone with real skill. Red belonged only to those who’d mastered it completely — demon lords, dragons, primordial demons, spirits, and a few other names I hadn’t learned yet.

And above all of it, she said, was pure-mana — silver-white, and held by exactly one kind of being.

”Only the gods have that,” she told me. ”And here’s a secret, Kai — all seven of them started as dragons.”

Kai. That was the name I answered to now. I still hadn’t decided if I liked it.

”Dragons became gods?” I said. ”How?”

”It’s not easy. You need to survive fifteen thousand years to earn what’s called an evolution seed. Only then can you ascend.”

”...Mom. How old is this world?”

She only laughed, which I decided meant older than you can currently process, sweetheart.

That is total bs. Who the heck came up with that rule anyway.

Fifteen thousand years. No wonder there’s only seven of them. If it were any easier, half this planet would be running the multiverse by lunchtime.

We lived isolated from everyone else, at the top of a place called the Horizontal Line — nothing but the three of us, a wooden house my father had somehow built with his own hands, and a view that never got old even when everything else about the day did. My mother’s name was Ashley. My father’s, Daniel.

By six, my father had me training with a sword, and it turned out the man could actually fight. ”Kai — lunch is ready. You too, Daniel, that’s enough training for today,” my mother would call, and we’d both go in, still sweating.

Within two weeks I could fly, if you were generous with the word — about seven feet off the ground, no higher, but flying all the same. Within four months I’d learned to gauge the shape of my own anti-mana, which my father told me showed itself as an aura, its color marking its stage. I didn’t need to worry about the usual bottleneck between mana and anti-mana — dragon blood meant I’d been born past that wall already. All that was left was making it stronger.

Two years passed like that. And then, one morning, my mother sat me down to actually start teaching me control.

”Relax your mind first, Kai.”

”Okay, Mom.”

”Breathe. Empty it out. Feel your own energy — not what’s around you.”

”Okay, Mom.” I meant it this time.

”Don’t move from this spot until I get back from town. I need a few things.”

”Wait — I’m just supposed to stay here the whole time?”

”Yes, sweetie. I think you can manage.”

”...Okay.”

She left. I sat. And for the first time since I’d opened my eyes in this world, I finally had a quiet moment to wonder what I was actually supposed to become in it.
