The other side of Reincarnation

　The birds stopped first.

I noticed it before I understood why it mattered.

The road past the fork had the same held-breath quiet the mountain had the night everything ended.

　No birdsong.

No rustle of anything small moving through the underbrush.

Doran noticed it too. I watched his hand drift toward his sword hilt without him seeming to decide to do it.

　”Too quiet,” he said, low.

”Yeah,” I said. ”I remember this kind of quiet.”

Filing that thought away where it belongs.

Not now.

We found the scorch marks an hour later, exactly where the merchant’s story had promised them — a wide black scar burned into the treeline, bark blistered clean off in a pattern too even to be a wildfire, too deliberate to be anything but a weapon aimed with intent.

”That’s not a sword,” Fenrik said quietly, echoing the merchant’s own words back at us without seeming to notice he’d done it.

　”No,” Doran agreed.

　”It’s not.”

I crouched near the edge of the burn, running a hand just above the scorched bark.

Whatever had made this hadn’t been wild or uncontrolled.

　It had been precise.

Someone did this on purpose.

Someone with training.

I didn’t get much further than that thought before the underbrush erupted around us.

They came from three directions at once.

　Six of them.

　Maybe seven.

Moving with the kind of coordination that told me this wasn’t the first ambush they’d run.

　Nets.

　Chains.

The particular, practiced cruelty of people who’d done this exact thing to exact people before.

”Well, well,” the one at the front said, eyes sliding past Doran and me entirely and landing on Fenrik with a slow, appraising smile that made my stomach turn before he’d even finished speaking.

”Didn’t expect the road to hand us premium stock today. Beastkin fetch a good price out east. Especially the healthy ones.”

Product.

He called him product.

　Doran moved first.

His blade was already up, shoving Fenrik back and taking the first strike meant for him — a burst of scorching anti-mana from a wiry man near the back, the same signature that had scarred the trees.

It caught Doran across the side.

　He went down hard.

A sound tore out of him that I will hear for a long time.

　”Doran—”

　”I’m fine—”

　He wasn’t.

Blood was already soaking through his shirt too fast, his breathing gone wrong and shallow.

　”Get Fenrik—”

Two of them had already closed on Fenrik, chain in hand.

That same appraising smile was still fixed on the leader’s face as he watched his men move in on something he’d already decided wasn’t a person.

I don’t remember deciding anything after that.

　I remember heat.

I remember the ground beneath my feet stopping feeling like ground.

I remember, distantly, a sound that might have come from me.

　Low.

　Wrong.

Nothing like anything I’d ever heard myself make.

I don’t remember crossing the distance to the leader.

I don’t remember what my hands did when I got there.

What I have instead are pieces, secondhand, assembled later from what Fenrik told me and what I could read on Doran’s face once it was over.

The leader’s smile gone before he understood why.

The chain-bearers on the ground and not getting up.

The wiry man who’d hurt Doran simply not there anymore in any way that could be described gently.

Fenrik told me, much later, that I hadn’t looked angry.

That was the part that stayed with him longest, he said.

　I’d looked calm.

　Almost pleasant.

　The whole time.

I came back to myself standing in a clearing that didn’t look like a clearing anymore, breathing hard, hands shaking in a way that had nothing to do with cold.

　Doran was still down.

　Still bleeding.

　Still alive.

I registered that fact before anything else.

The only fact that mattered in that first fractured second.

　”Doran—”

My voice didn’t sound like mine.

I dropped to my knees beside him, hands already moving, pressing down on the wound with a precision I didn’t remember learning outside of my mother’s leaf-lighting exercises.

　Except this wasn’t a leaf.

This was Doran’s blood soaking warm through my fingers.

And I could not — would not — let this be the thing that took someone else from me.

　”Kai.”

His voice was thin, but steady enough to be an order.

”Kai. Look at me. I’m here.”

　”You’re bleeding out.”

　”I’ve had worse,” he said.

It was clearly a lie this time.

　We both knew it.

　Neither of us said so.

Fenrik got the bleeding properly stopped — hands surer than I expected, some old field-medicine instinct clearly learned the hard way over years alone.

I sat back on my heels once it was done, staring at my own hands like they belonged to somebody else.

Nobody said anything for a long moment.

The clearing around us didn’t look like it had ten minutes earlier.

I made myself not look at it too closely.

　”Kai.”

Fenrik’s voice was careful, the way you’d talk to something that might still be dangerous.

　”You okay?”

Am I?

”I don’t know,” I said honestly, because I couldn’t think of anything else true to say. ”I don’t — I don’t really remember what happened. Not all of it.”

Doran, still pale, still weak, managed to fix me with a look anyway.

　Not fear.

I want to be clear about that, because some part of me had braced for fear.

It was something closer to recognition.

Like he’d just watched a promise get kept that neither of us had said out loud yet.

”Whatever that was,” he said quietly, ”thank you for aiming it at them and not us.”

I don’t remember aiming it at all.

I didn’t say that part out loud.

I just nodded, helped him up as carefully as I could manage, and didn’t look back at the clearing again as we walked away from it.

We made camp early, badly shaken, further off the road than usual.

Doran slept fast and hard, exhausted past arguing about it.

Fenrik sat across the fire from me for a long while before he finally spoke.

”That’s not the first time, is it?”

　He paused.

　”Whatever that was.”

”No,” I said. ”The mountain. My parents. Something like it happened then too. I don’t remember all of that either.”

He was quiet for a moment, weighing something.

”Doesn’t scare me,” he said finally. ”Figured you should know that. Whatever’s under there — it went after the people trying to hurt us. Not us.”

I want to believe that means something good about me.

I’m honestly not sure it does.

”Thank you,” I said, because it was the only true thing I had left in me that night. ”For not being scared. I think I might need that, going forward.”

　Fenrik didn’t say anything else.

He just settled in across the fire, close enough that I could hear him breathing.

And for the first time since the clearing, something in my chest loosened.

　Just slightly.

　Just enough.

Still three of us.

Still here.

But something’s different now.

I can feel it.

And I don’t think it’s going back to sleep completely, ever again.
