Reborn with a Space: Building a Fortune Amidst Famine

Chapter 942: Chapter 942: Waiting

James glared, ”How is that possible? We came here with advanced technology. It can only be 80-20.”

”Then there’s nothing to discuss. You can talk to the person in charge. I definitely don’t agree here.”

”Minister Su, it’s because you don’t agree that I’ve come to you.”

”Then there’s nothing I can do, there will be no changes to 60-40 at all, and as for why, I think Ambassador James should understand better. It can’t be too much, good things can’t be monopolized by you alone.

Whether it’s building factories, investment, or labor, all the policies here are beneficial to you without any disadvantage. Originally, your cost was controlled at ten, but here it’s only seven. James, no one is a fool. Everyone knows how to calculate this account.”

”If there’s no profit, we wouldn’t have come. Also, you’ve only considered the cost; why not mention the technology cost? What about transportation costs?”

Su Yuanyuan laughed, ”Why don’t you talk about expanding into surrounding markets? And if you were to transport domestically to our surroundings, the freight wouldn’t just be about 30 percent.

What? Does Ambassador James think I’m a fool? Or do you think we’re all fools?”

”It can’t be 60-40. I can only accept a minimum of 50-50.”

”Then Ambassador James, go talk to the person in charge, make your plan, and I’ll decide after I review it.

Also, these economic matters aren’t under my jurisdiction.”

James stood up helplessly. This woman was truly difficult to deal with.

Now it’s already the fall of ’71, and in a few months, it will be ’72. Su Yuanyuan waited in anticipation every day. In just over a month, she would go to Japan, and though she didn’t have the power to turn their world upside down, she could definitely make them uncomfortable.

Sun Kaisheng’s public trial was imminent. This matter would be an unprecedented public hearing.

Many people from out of town were attending, all those involved, and even the families who were aware that their relatives were spies but did not report them, were present at the public trial.

This time was particularly strict. There was no leniency at all. Sun Kaisheng’s four children did not appear at the public trial.

Firstly, because they truly didn’t know. Secondly, because they were young. Finally, the prosecution decided to let them go.

However, they now had no place to go. Someone suggested sending them to Xu Shuying, but at that moment, Zeng Zhenqing almost got into a fight at the venue.

The only thing left to do was arrange for them to go to an orphanage. But given their situation, even at the orphanage, what could be done? No one wanted to adopt them, and they were ostracized and resented by all the other children. But that’s another story.

On the day of the public trial, Zeng Zhenqing arranged a lot of security measures to ensure that the previous incidents wouldn’t happen again.

Fortunately, this time it was relatively simple, with none of the higher-ups participating.

It was still held in the suburbs since there wasn’t a venue large enough in the city.

To prevent anyone from rescuing them, Zhang Chunsheng arranged for many people and took the opportunity to see if anyone would show up. We could say the net was cast wide, waiting for someone to make a move.

This time, reporters were allowed to attend, and for the first time, foreign journalists were permitted to be present, which had never happened before.

Actually, many people opposed this decision. But Su Yuanyuan was willing, for various reasons. Even though there would be many inaccurate reports from foreign journalists, the advantages outweighed the disadvantages.

Su Yuanyuan specially sent several translators over, which was also intended to intimidate the foreign reporters.

At noon, the four of them ate together. The other three were in low spirits, but Su Yuanyuan was indifferent. Their close relationship stripped away the external factors, leaving only personal emotions.

They ate in silence. Su Yuanyuan complained to herself that if this was the case, why eat together? Why not brood separately?

”Xiao Su, has the public trial ended?” Xu Guozhi asked.

”Not yet. It’s a full day’s event today.”

”A full day? That’s quite a long time. Any arrangements?”

”There should be. There’s plenty of hot water, and everyone can get two steamed buns. No vegetables are prepared.”

Xu Guozhi nodded. ”As long as it’s arranged, everyone’s emotions must be very intense.”

This time, Su Yuanyuan said nothing. That was certain. After years of turmoil and hardship, the victory was finally theirs, yet some still acknowledged traitors as their own kin, especially those they admired. This was something they could absolutely not accept.

In fact, Su Yuanyuan thought some might say Sun Kaisheng may have colluded with the enemy long ago; otherwise, how could he have fought for so many years? Surely, it added a few more years of suffering.

It’s human nature to think that way; common folks with little education predictably have simple thoughts. But this kind of talk couldn’t be shared with Xu Guozhi; he seemed to be in a bad mood lately, better not to provoke him.

Zeng Zhenqing was also in low spirits. He really hadn’t seen Sun Kaisheng or Xu Shuying again. But he still used his abilities to protect them.

Lunch was too depressing. With no time to relax in the afternoon, by the time evening classes came around, Su Yuanyuan was a bit exhausted.

”Leader, can we go to Japan this time? Our spoken language matches theirs, and we won’t be recognized by our appearance.”

”What do you want to do there?”

”To buy some books.”

”You should strive for it yourself; the mission is entirely arranged by the security department. I’m not involved.”

”Minister Su, I want to stay there. I’m an orphan, with no attachments. If they can, so can we.

Once I have my identity settled, I’ll arrange some matters.”

Su Yuanyuan shook her head, ”That’s not my jurisdiction either. You can apply, but it’s quite dangerous and a real test of character.

Firstly, loyalty. Though you were born and raised here, you haven’t lived domestically for long, and you’ll spend the rest of your life there; people are emotional creatures, you might regret it.”

This left the three of them silent. Yes, people are emotional beings. Future emotional ties would be the hardest to handle.

The next morning, Zhang Chunsheng came over, and they had lunch together.

He recounted the events of the previous day, feeling very heavy-hearted.

”In the end, we couldn’t save Sun Kaisheng; he was seriously injured.”

Su Yuanyuan could understand. Gu Xiuqing wasn’t as badly hurt as Sun Kaisheng, mainly because she was a foreigner. Her betrayal was normal, but for someone who was a hero in the people’s heart, it was unacceptable.

Zeng Zhenqing sighed. He had expected this. Wondered how many times Sun Kaisheng could endure; it surely wasn’t just once or twice. This had sparked public outrage. No one could save him anymore.
