Chapter 469: Chapter 469: I Got Here First!

”W-What’s this?” Claire blinked, her expression shocked. ”Devour? Your Majesty, how could His Majesty do such a thing?”

In the half-elf girl’s memory, the handsome Emperor was always kind and caring towards everyone.

Although her understanding had been updated through Eriri’s guidance, she already knew about certain fundamental truths. For example, every ruler truly cared only about those who could maintain their reign, and wouldn’t genuinely solve the problems of the common people.

But this didn’t stop Claire from still having good feelings left for the Emperor. She couldn’t believe that the person she once admired would do something like this.

”Why wouldn’t he?” Ashley laughed sarcastically. ”Do you think someone who could win the succession battle among sixteen princes and take the throne would be as naive as you are?”

”But that doesn’t mean His Majesty is a scrupulous person, does it?” Claire frowned and asked.

”Do you think our father died from the smallpox epidemic?” Ashley scoffed. ”You probably don’t know that he ate a poisonous herb called Quegen Grass when he was a child, so his body was already immune to smallpox. Yet he still died of smallpox two years ago during the Eastern Expansion War. Isn’t that ridiculous?”

”It was an assassination?” Claire gasped.

”Yes, the culprit was Patrick,” Ashley nodded firmly. ”Of course, I know you hate Father. He was indeed a bastard who did all sorts of evil, but at least he treated you like his own daughter.”

Claire fell silent. She admitted Ashley was right; the man had truly treated her as family. Compared to the half-elf children of the heads of other families, her childhood and youth were like living in paradise.

Aside from often being looked down upon, she had ample material possessions, education, and resources. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have been able to study at Brook Academy in the capital, nor could she have become a Dragon Knight.

For this, Claire did indeed have to thank him.

However, thinking of her mother’s tragic fate, Claire couldn’t feel sad about his death. She just took a deep breath and slowly said, ”Patrick was his most trusted personal guard, wasn’t he? Why would someone like that kill him?”

”Because Patrick is from the Holy Luo Academy,” Ashley’s gaze drifted out the window, and she said lightly, ”Codename Black Eagle.”

Holy Luo Academy?

Hearing this name, Claire felt as if she had been struck by lightning. ”How can that be? It’s impossible!”

Eriri, who hadn’t spoken for a while, was now curious and asked, ”What’s the Holy Luo Academy?”

”A special intelligence organization that is always loyal only to the royal family,” Ashley didn’t hide anything and frankly replied, ”But rather than an intelligence organization, they’re more like an assassination and espionage group. They claim to only protect the royal family’s safety, but in reality, they secretly plant numerous spies in various noble families and among the commoners.”

”The Embroidered Uniform Guard? Tokkō?” Eriri suddenly understood.

It seemed that the power struggles in this other world were no different from Earth, just with different packaging.

”What?” Ashley didn’t quite understand what she meant by those two names.

”It’s nothing,” Eriri shook her head. Explaining it would be too troublesome. ”So, the Emperor had planted a spy in your family long ago? And when the time was right two years ago, he finally made his move?”

”Yes, and that was just the beginning,” Ashley nodded. ”Our Lavende family has no male heirs. Father had only two daughters, Claire and me. Naturally, I inherited the position of family head. As for Claire, she was chosen to join the Glorious Legion, essentially falling entirely under the Emperor’s control.”

”You mean I joined the Glorious Legion because His Majesty intended it?” Claire was sometimes slow-witted, but that didn’t mean she was unintelligent.

”Otherwise?” Ashley raised an eyebrow and smiled. ”Do you really think it was the result of your own efforts? Don’t be silly. You’re just a half-elf. That dirty bloodline handicap cannot be broken through effort alone. The only thing that can break it is the Emperor’s sacred decree!”

”Why?”

”It’s all to swallow up our Lavende family. If you were to become an imperial consort, and I were to die, then the Lavende family would be completely annexed by the royal family and disappear into the river of history.”

”So, why?” Claire’s eyes softened, and she asked dazedly, ”Why would he, already the supreme ruler, do these things?”

”For an ambitious person, being Emperor is just the starting point,” before Ashley could speak, Eriri chimed in. ”The expansion of power is endless. An emperor with ambition would never allow any family that shares his power to exist.”

”It’s too cruel,” Claire lowered her head and whispered. ”So everything was just a conspiracy.”

”We’ve been here for too long. The family can probably no longer be saved,” Ashley sighed. ”Rather than facing that, it’s better to drag the entire empire down with us.”

”Ashley...”

Claire now somewhat understood her sister’s thinking, but still disagreed slightly. ”I think this won’t solve the fundamental problem. The destruction of the empire will cause a chain reaction, implicating many innocent people. They did nothing wrong, and at least the common people shouldn’t be involved.”

”The common people,” Ashley took a deep breath. ”You’ve really grown, Claire. You probably wouldn’t have considered these things before. Have you gained any new insights in this world?”

”Well, not exactly,” Claire said, her gaze secretly glancing at Eriri. ”Just combined with Mr. Grim Reaper’s teachings, I’ve had a few personal realizations.”

”As expected?”

Ashley smiled as she anticipated, then turned and walked to Eriri’s side. To Claire’s astonished expression, she hooked Eriri’s arm. ”Besides Mr. Grim Reaper, no one else could enlighten your stubborn mind, right? But there’s one thing I hope you know, I won’t give Mr. Grim Reaper to you!”

”You, Ashley...” Claire’s cheeks gradually turned red, both embarrassed and angry. ”What are you even talking about?!”
