She could only watch in helpless, agonizing horror as her most loyal captains bled to shield her paralyzed body.

Thorne watched the carnage with manic glee.

A twisted, triumphant laugh erupted from his throat, growing louder and more unhinged with every passing second.

”Hahaha! Yes! Tear them apart! Once we kill the Veylara, Victory will be ours” Thorne roared, his face flushed with mad excitement. ”This is the price of your stubbornness, Veylara!

This is what happens when you refuse the inevitable! The old ways are dead! The Coalition offers survival, and I will be the one to deliver our tribe into glory!”

His laughter echoed across the bloody battlefield like the cawing of a vulture, full of venom and ambition as he watched loyal Veynar warriors fall to the blades of their own kin.

...

Seeing that no matter how hard she struggled, her body refused to obey... her limbs heavy and her essence sluggish and unresponsive... Veylara finally accepted the bitter truth.

She couldn’t move.

She couldn’t fight.

She could barely even breathe properly.

Gritting her teeth against the growing coldness spreading through her veins, she forced her mind to focus inward, turning her attention to the insidious poison now raging inside her body.

Every heartbeat sent fresh waves of burning agony through her meridians, as if ice was slowly replacing her blood.

When...? How...?

Veylara’s mind raced through the haze of pain, desperately trying to trace the exact moment the poison had entered her system. They hadn’t eaten anything since the march began... all rations had been carefully inspected.

Her personal water skin... she had filled it herself from the village well before departure. She had even tested it on a small sip.

Nothing.

Yet the symptoms were unmistakable... creeping numbness, essence suppression, and a deep, unnatural fatigue that no amount of willpower could shake off.

Then, her eyes fell upon the thick, dark purple lines rapidly tracing their way up the veins of her forearms like poisonous spiderwebs.

The discoloration wasn’t spreading from her stomach or any internal wound... it was spreading directly from the ritual ash she had smeared across her face and neck before the battle — the sacred markings every Veynar warrior wore before charging into war.

”The charcoal...” Veylara whispered hoarsely, her deep blue eyes widening in sudden, horrific realization.

”Ah, you finally notice,” Thorne chuckled darkly. He lowered his hand from his chin, looking at her with pure, mocking amusement. ”The sacred ritual paint. Smeared right onto your skin, right over your primary pathways before you marched into battle. You always were so meticulous about tradition, weren’t you, Warchief?”

Thorne’s lips curled into a cruel, satisfied smile as he watched the horror dawn on Veylara’s face.

He took a slow step closer, savoring the moment like fine wine.

”It was the Heart-Freezing Poison,” he declared, his voice thick with pride. ”A nightmarishly toxic resin mentioned in our ancestor’s record, extracted from the deepest, rotting roots of the forbidden sectors deep within the Orrath Jungle.

Very few even know of its existence, and fewer still have the courage to obtain it. The Great Marauder Chief acquired it at great cost and even greater risk. But it was worth every drop of blood spent.”

He gestured lazily toward the dark purple veins now crawling visibly up Veylara’s forearms.

”It is a truly insidious poison, Warchief. While it rests on the skin, the paste carries no scent, no detectable magical frequency, and no trace of malice whatsoever.

To the naked eye, and even to most spiritual senses, it appears as nothing more than ordinary ritual charcoal... the same sacred ash our warriors have worn for generations before battle. Completely harmless.”

Thorne chuckled softly, clearly enjoying himself.

”But the moment a high-layer practitioner like you or that old witch Zephyra unleashes their full power... opening your energy channels wide and circulating massive amounts of essence... the poison awakens.”

His eyes gleamed with malicious delight.

”The intense internal heat and the surging essence act as the perfect catalyst. The resin melts, transforming into a thick, invisible sludge that seeps through your body and floods directly into your sun core and spiritual pathways.

Once inside your body, it hardens like frozen water, clamping down viciously on your core. It doesn’t just suppress your power... it severs your connection to your spiritual source entirely.”

He leaned forward, voice dropping to a venomous whisper.

”The harder you fight... the more essence you circulate... the faster and deeper the poison spreads. Every swing of your spear, every surge of essence you released today, every emerald cyclone Zephyra summoned... all of it fed the toxin.

It used your own legendary strength against you. The more power you poured out to protect your precious tribe, the tighter the chains became.”

Thorne spread his arms wide, as if presenting a masterpiece.

”It was a trap designed with cruel, perfect precision. We didn’t need to overpower you in direct combat. We simply needed you to be yourself... the mighty, unrelenting Warchief who would never hold back when her people were in danger.

Your pride, your sense of duty, your stubborn refusal to show weakness... all of it became the very things that doomed you.”

Veylara’s face turned pure red. A low, guttural growl of pure rage escaped her throat as the thick purple veins continued their slow, relentless crawl higher up her arms, inching dangerously close to her heart and core.

Each beat of her heart now sent fresh spikes of icy fire through her body. Her essence, once an unstoppable ocean, felt like a frozen lake cracking beneath her feet.

Thorne’s laughter grew louder, dripping with triumphant ecstasy.

”You brought this upon yourself, Veylara. All that pride... all that stubborn, unyielding strength... and in the end, it became the very chain that binds you. How ironic. The great Warchief, brought low not by enemy blades, but by her own sacred traditions and unbreakable will.”

He tilted his head, eyes shining with mockery.

”How does it feel? To have your own power turned into the weapon that kills you? To realize that every life you took today, every heroic stand you made, only hastened your own defeat?”

Veylara glared at him with eyes burning with murderous hatred, even as her body continued to betray her. The poison was spreading faster now, numbing her limbs and tightening its frozen grip around her core.

But even through the agony, her spirit refused to break.

Thorne’s smile widened.

”And the best part? By the time you fully realize just how helpless you are... it will already be too late.”
