Veylara stared blankly at the dark, steaming puddle of blood beneath her. The fiery, unbridled fury that had defined her face vanished, replaced by a profound, terrifying confusion.

She wiped her chin with a trembling hand, looking at the dark, thick residue on her skin.

What... what is this?

She was a Layer 4 powerhouse. Her body was tempered by decades of essence refinement; illnesses could not touch her, and poisons should have been incinerated by her essence the moment they entered her bloodstream.

Gritting her teeth until her gums bled, she turned her consciousness inward.

She attempted to manually force her Layer 4 core to activate, intending to send a raging torrent of essence through her pathways to burn out whatever hidden ailment had seized her limbs.

But as she pushed her mind toward her stomach, she found nothing.

Her breath hitched. Her deep blue eyes widened in absolute, paralyzing horror.

The familiar, roaring, boiling sea of her sun core was completely silent. It wasn’t just suppressed nor was it depleted from her rampage.

The spiritual pathways connecting her mind to her core seemed to had been completely, cleanly, and utterly severed.

It felt as though a cold, impenetrable wall of dead stone had been erected inside her spiritual pool. No matter how hard she clawed at her internal energy, she couldn’t draw forth a single spark of essence.

She was completely hollow. A Layer 4 warlord, suddenly reduced to the physical strength of an ordinary, mortal woman.

”Warchief! Speak to us! What happened?!” the commander pleaded, his hands shaking.

He looked down at her pale, sweating face, horrified to see the veins around her neck turning a faint, sickly shade of bruised purple.

The panic among the nearby Veynar warriors spread like wildfire. They had been riding the high of an absolute victory, but seeing their invincible leader brought to her knees, shattered their morale in an instant.

...

High on the limestone ridge, High Shaman Zephyra had stood like a monument to the Veynar’s eternal resilience.

Her long silver hair whipped violently around her face like webbed threads of lightning, her arms raised high as she woven the very atmosphere into an instrument of absolute devastation.

The emerald cyclones roared under her absolute command, grinding the Coalition vanguard into dust and bone.

To the terrified invaders, she was a force of nature... an immortal impervious to mortal harm.

But because of her profound spiritual perception, Zephyra didn’t even need to look down at the battlefield to know what was happening.

The sudden, catastrophic collapse of Warchief Veylara’s essence pressure hit the High Shaman’s mind like a physical battering ram.

The vibrant, scorching aura of the Warchief... a sun-core that had been blazing like a beacon of absolute victory... was abruptly snuffed out. In its place remained only a cold, hollow void, a dying ember drowning in a sea of shadow.

Zephyra’s head snapped around, her eyes straining through the billowing curtains of white limestone dust.

Down on the blood-slicked stones, she saw the impossible: Veylara, the invincible apex predator, was kneeling in the dirt, her body trembling as a frantic, disorganized ring of veterans scrambled to cover her.

”VEYLARA!!”

Zephyra’s voice cracked, stripped of its ethereal authority and reduced to a raw, desperate gasp of maternal dread.

For years, High Shaman Zephyra had watched over the Warchief like a silent guardian spirit.

From the very beginning, she had stood by Veylara’s side through every brutal trial.

She had witnessed the younger woman’s fierce struggle against the previous tyrannical chief... the bloody challenges, the political betrayals, and the endless assassination attempts.

Zephyra had quietly supported her in the shadows, offering wisdom, healing her wounds in secret, and strengthening her resolve when the weight of leadership threatened to crush her.

She had been there during the even darker conflict with Veylara’s own ambitious brothers... a vicious power struggle that nearly tore the tribe apart.

Zephyra had lent her power, her counsel, and her unwavering loyalty as Veylara fought tooth and nail to claim the position of Warchief.

When victory finally came, stained with blood and sorrow, it was Zephyra who helped her rise and stand tall before the tribe.

Even after Veylara secured her position, Zephyra continued to watch over her.

She supported the Warchief as she led the Veynar against countless external threats... savage beast tides, rival tribes, and the ever-present shadow of the Coalition.

Through famine, war, and countless sleepless nights, Zephyra had been her constant pillar... the calm voice in the storm, the healer after every battle, the one who reminded Veylara that true strength also meant protecting her people.

Through all those long, grueling years...

She had never seen her fall.

Veylara had always stood unbroken.

A true force of nature.

A storm that refused to yield no matter how fierce the odds.

Even when exhausted, even when wounded, even when the weight of leadership pressed down like an entire mountain, the Warchief had never once knelt.

Until now.

Without a single thought for her own safety or the spells she held in the sky, she was about to hurry down.

She took her very first step forward.

CRACK.

A sound like shattering glass echoed inside Zephyra’s own mind. A sharp, agonizing lance of pain exploded through her newly healed body, so excruciatingly that it made her vision go completely black for a full second.

Her knees buckled violently beneath her tribal robes.

The ancient wooden staff trembled in her grip, nearly slipping from her fingers as a wave of crushing exhaustion slammed into her.

Zephyra staggered forward, her body crashing down hard against the sharp, jagged rocks of the ridge. Pain flared across her side, but she caught herself at the last moment, driving the butt of her staff into the stone with a desperate crack to keep from collapsing completely.

Her chest heaved in violent, suffocating spasms. Every breath felt like fire tearing through her lungs.

Cough Cough

A brutal coughing fit seized her. Her entire body convulsed as thick, dark blood surged up her throat.

She spat it out forcefully onto the gray stone below... a vivid splash of crimson that glistened wetly under the dim light.

More followed, dribbling down her chin despite her efforts to hold it back.
