Gardener of Eden

Chapter 1: Chapter 1: Awakening

The coarse cloth was damp, warm, and smelled faintly of cheap lavender soap—the only luxury Martha Vance ever permitted herself to buy.

”Hold still for just a moment longer, sweetheart,” Martha whispered, her voice carrying the soft, familiar rhythm that had lulled Rowan to sleep for fifteen years.

Rowan lay flat on his back, his breath small and shallow. He kept his movements strictly controlled. A sudden jerk of his arm could fracture a wrist; an awkward twist of his torso could crack a rib. At fifteen, his limbs were painfully slender, his pale skin translucent enough to trace the fragile blue web of veins beneath. Osteogenesis imperfecta—brittle bone disease—had stolen his childhood before it ever began, trapping him within the perimeter of a faded mattress.

”Almost done,” Martha murmured, gently wiping down his right forearm. Her knuckles were rough, stained with dish soap and worn from long hours scrubbing floors for wealthier households in the district.

From the kitchen down the small hallway, the muffled sound of a heavy key turning in the lock echoed through the thin walls. Heavy, dragging footsteps followed. Arthur Vance had returned from his third shift of the day.

”He asleep?” Arthur’s low, tired voice drifted into the bedroom as he leaned against the doorframe, still wearing his stained laborer’s jacket. Dark shadows bruised the skin beneath his eyes, his shoulders stooped under the weight of fifteen years of mountain-high medical bills.

”Not yet,” Rowan said softly, turning his head carefully on the pillow to smile at his father. ”Welcome home, Dad.”

Arthur’s exhausted face softened instantly into a warm, crinkling smile. He walked over, kneeling beside the bed, and gently squeezed Rowan’s uninjured shoulder—the only place he knew was safe to touch with his heavy, calloused hands.

”Tomorrow’s the big day, son,” Arthur said softly. ”Fifteen. The Awakening.”

”Don’t fill his head with crazy expectations, Arthur,” Martha cautioned gently, though her eyes glistened as she wrung out the towel into a plastic basin. ”Whatever class comes, it’s a blessing. Even if it’s just a simple scribe or an indoor clerk... something safe.”

Rowan knew what she meant. In a world where fifteen-year-olds awakened into mighty Warriors, Mages, and Archers tasked with exploring dangerous rift zones, Rowan’s dream was infinitely simpler. He didn’t want to fight monsters or command fire. He just wanted a class that would allow him to sit at a desk and earn enough coin to let his parents rest.

”I know, Mum,” Rowan said softly, his deep, clear eyes looking between the two people who had sacrificed everything to keep him alive. ”I just want to help.”

Arthur kissed Rowan’s forehead, his beard scratching gently against his skin. ”Get some rest, Row. Midnight is almost here.”

They blew out the desk lamp, leaving only the pale moonlight filtering through the cracked window pane. Rowan lay in the dark, listening to the rhythmic ticking of the wall clock.

11:57 PM. 11:58 PM. 11:59 PM.

Across the world, millions of fifteen-year-olds were staying up, waiting for the celestial alignment. Rowan closed his eyes, taking a careful, quiet breath.

Clang.

The ancient grandfather clock in the village square chimed the first stroke of midnight.

Outside, high above the clouds, the North Star—Polaris—began to burn with a blinding, terrifying radiance. A beam of crystalline, emerald-gold light cut through the dark cosmos, piercing the sky like a spear of pure creation. It bypassed the roofs of the town, ignored the standard mana streams of the atmosphere, and plunged straight through the wooden ceiling of the Vance home, enveloping Rowan’s bed in a pillar of blinding, transcendent radiance.

Martha and Arthur gasped, rushing to the doorway, but they were held back by an immovable, gentle pressure of pure energy.

Inside the pillar of light, Rowan felt a sudden, terrifying heat bloom deep within his chest.

Crack.

The sound echoed internally—a sharp, terrifying sound he had heard dozens of times in his life. But this time, there was no excruciating pain.

Instead, a torrent of primordial vitality surged into his marrow. The brittle, chalk-like density of his skeleton dissolved and reformed into something dense, supple, and unyielding. The deep-seated, constant ache that had lived in his bones since birth vanished, replaced by a soothing, spring-like warmth. His atrophied muscles twitched as cosmic life force flooded every cell, repairing years of stagnation in seconds.

Rowan gasped, filling his lungs completely for the first time in his entire life without fear of a collapsing ribcage.

As the light slowly dissolved into floating, golden botanical dust, a shimmering, azure status interface materialized directly in front of his eyes.

Rowan stared at the floating letters, his mind—sharpened by fifteen years of quiet observation and reading—processing the staggering numbers. His physical attributes were pathetically low—a 2 across Strength, Agility, and Constitution, reflecting a body that had never swung a sword or run a step. Yet his Intelligence sat at an unprecedented 15.

And above it all stood two words that made his heart race: Transcendent. Cured.

”Rowan...?” Martha’s voice trembled from the doorway, tears streaming down her face as she looked at her son in the fading golden dust.

Rowan swung his legs over the side of the bed. His feet touched the cold wooden floorboards.

Slowly, carefully, tests born of fifteen years of habit, he put his weight on his legs. They trembled violently under his meager 2 Strength, but his bones held. Firm. Solid. Whole.

Rowan stood up.

He took a step forward, then another, standing completely upright on his own two feet for the very first time.

”Mum... Dad...” Rowan whispered, a single tear slipping down his cheek as a soft, gentle smile broke across his face. ”I’m okay. I can walk.”
