Please Stop Spreading Rumors About Me — They Keep Coming True

”I can hold it,” Yun Shu said, which is exactly what everyone says right before they can’t.

I want to be fair to her, because it wasn’t arrogance — it was the opposite. It was that specific thing that makes her, her. She is the one who checks; she verifies; she never trusts the work to anyone less careful. She has spent her whole life catching what everyone else misses. To Yun Shu, reading the world’s ache was just the biggest fact-check in history, and she wasn’t about to hand a soul’s fragile shape to some half-trained stranger who might lose them in the dark. So, she’d carry all of them. Herself. Correctly.

”You can’t,” Mu Chen said, kneeling gently. He had the authority of a man who’d spent thirty years pulling people from this exact ledge. ”Yun Shu, listen to me. I know the shape of what you’re doing because it’s the shape of everyone I’ve failed to save — those who tried to carry the weight alone because they didn’t trust anyone else to do it right. That isn’t thoroughness; it’s a trap. That’s how Su Yue drowned. The brightest, most careful soul in the world, trying to hold everyone at once, alone, correctly.” He took her cold hands. ”The water doesn’t drown you because it’s heavy — it drowns you because you’re alone in it. You taught me that. All of you did.”

”Then who reads them?” she asked, her voice cracking. ”There are thousands, Mu Chen. Tens of thousands. Someone has to read every ache in every town or they stay lost, and I’m the only one who can—”

”No,” I said. ”You’re not. That’s the whole point. You never were.”

I gave her back her own line — the one she’d been handing me for a hundred Chapters, the one I’d been too slow to learn.

”You’re allowed to set it down,” I said. ”You. Not just me. You’ve been telling me for Chapters that I’m the last one who won’t put anything down, but the whole time you’ve been carrying the entire nameless ocean in your chest and calling it thoroughness. You don’t have to read the sea, Yun Shu. Nobody reads the sea. That was never the job.”

Because here is the answer, and it had been sitting in our own hands since a valley a long way back.

The nearest lit window.

We’d learned it once already, the day the completed map turned out to be a census of grief too big for anyone to carry: nobody carries the map. Everybody carries the one soul at the end of their own nearest lane, and the sum closes with no hole left over. We’d built our whole homecoming on it. And yet, faced with the raw ocean, we’d forgotten to apply it to the thing it fit best of all.

Yun Shu didn’t have to read the world’s ache. Every town could read its own.

Because that’s whose ache it is. The gap in the lullaby belongs to the town that sings it. The empty chair belongs to the family that sets it. The worn path to the door that was never there belongs to the people who wear it. Nobody is better placed to feel the shape of a town’s missing than the town itself — they’ve been living inside the hole for a thousand years. Yun Shu’s gift was never reading every ache. It was teaching the world to read its own.

So that is what she did, and it is the largest thing she has ever done. It cost her what it always costs the careful to learn: she had to trust the work to a thousand hands less precise than her own, let some of it be done imperfectly, and believe that a town reading its own gap a little clumsily was better than Yun Shu reading it perfectly and alone.

She taught them the craft she’d invented — how to feel the shape of a silence, how to hold it up to the ocean, how to say here, this is the shape of who we lost, is this you. Town by town, ache by ache, the healed world began to read itself. Nobody held more than their own missing. The sum began, slowly, to close. And the un-indexed ocean — the thing that was going to take ten thousand years or never — became reachable after all, not by one careful woman carrying all of it, but by a whole world each carrying the one hole nearest its own hearth.

The Scroll dinged, asked me twice, and I said yes both times.

DING. TIER ASCENSION LOGGED. Yun Shu — [STORIED → LEGENDARY]. New title: [She Who Reads the Shape of the Missing]. New title: [The Fact-Checker of the Whole Sea]. Talent, I have to note for the record that she has been refusing to climb this ladder for FOUR YEARS. Do you know how rare that is? Everyone wants to go up. She has actively declined. She ran the Accuracy Division; she does not TRUST fame; she has kept herself deliberately small and unbelieved-in out of what I can only call spite. And the world has now decided to believe in her so hard that it dragged her up a rung against her express wishes, because a woman who teaches an entire world to find its own lost cannot STAY obscure no matter how much she’d prefer it. She is going to be insufferable about this. Belief: total, and rising, and entirely without her permission.

Yun Shu read that one over my shoulder. She was still pale and shaking, but she managed the driest look in her whole dry repertoire.

”Delete it,” she said.

”I can’t delete a tier ascension,” said the Scroll, delighted.

”I ran the office that deletes those.”

”You ran the office that deletes them for nobles,” the Scroll said, smug as I have ever heard it. ”You’ll find the honest ones are much harder to get rid of. Streisand Law. The more you hate it, the brighter it burns. You of all people should know.”

Yun Shu put her face in her cold hands and laughed, finally, cracked and exhausted and alive. I sat down next to her and let her lean on me for once, which is a thing she almost never does, being the one everyone else leans on — and I held the room, the way I do, except this time the room was just her.

The Redactor understood what had happened, and it did not like it.

I know because Xue Ningzhi felt it go still, the way you feel a predator stop pretending to graze.

”It just watched the whole world become an ark,” she said that night, grim. ”Think about what that means from where it sits. As long as we could only reach the listed dead, the sea was safe — most of the drowned were beyond us forever. It could afford to let us have our little homecomings. But Yun Shu just made every healed town a rescue list. There’s no ledger left to burn, because the ledger is everyone. We can reach the whole ocean now. Slowly — no faster than the world can carry, or the overflow lands on the dam — but all of it, eventually.” She looked at the fire. ”It can’t stop that by killing keepers anymore. The keeper is the world. So it’s going to stop trying to guard the sea, and go straight for the one thing that ends the whole homecoming in a single stroke if it falls.”

She didn’t look up at the top of the sky this time. None of us did. But we all knew what she meant, and the name we didn’t say sat with us at the fire: the brightest ark of all, drowning alone at the top of the world, holding a whole age of the unseen, un-scatterable, un-copyable, the one keeper we could not spread into a thousand hands.

Su Yue. Someday. Not tonight.

”Not tonight,” I agreed. We let it go, because that is the discipline, and because a woman on my shoulder had just carried a piece of the ocean and needed the night to be warm.

I went down the next morning, and the dam had felt it — the world beginning to read its own ache — and it was turning it over in the slow deep way it turns everything.

”They are finding the ones I made into strangers,” it said. ”The nameless. The ones I unwrote so completely that even I forgot who they were. The world above is... feeling the shape of them. Naming them from the outside. Reaching for the ones I did not think anyone could ever reach.” A long silence, ten thousand ages deep. ”I took their names so they would not be a weight to anyone. And the world is telling me it wants the weight. It is going out of its way to find the exact ones I hid best.”

”They were never a weight the world didn’t want,” I said. ”You hid them out of mercy. The world’s just telling you it would rather carry them than be spared them. That’s all any of this has ever been.”

It was quiet a while.

”When I open my hands,” it said — and it asks this differently every time now, creeping one inch closer to the door with each asking — ”the nameless ones. The strangers I made. Will the world know them? When they come up with no name and no one who remembers—”

”The world will read their shape and give them a hearth to come home to,” I said, ”and they’ll tell it their own names, the way Wen’ai did. Nobody comes up a stranger to a world that went looking for the shape of them. You kept them safe. We’ll do the rest. The when is still yours.”

”The when is mine,” it repeated, the way it does, like a man learning a prayer in a language he never thought he’d be allowed to speak — and a thousand miles up, the Homelight brightened, just a hair, because a drowning star had felt the world learn to read the shape of the nameless, and if the world could find the nameless by their holes, then someday it could find the one who left the brightest, largest hole of all.

The warm — late.

I made the soup. Yun Shu was wrapped in three blankets by the fire, still hollowed out from the reading. I brought her a bowl, braced for the verdict, and she took a sip and considered it for a long, serious moment.

”...It’s fine,” she said, her voice wobbling. She wasn’t talking about the soup. ”It’s reliably fine. Do you know how much I needed one reliably fine thing tonight.”

”There was the regular onion,” I said. ”I went back to the regular onion.”

”Good,” she said fiercely. ”Never change the onion again. I have read a thousand holes in the world today and I cannot survive an ambitious soup on top of it.” And then, quieter, leaning into me: ”Thank you. For making me put it down. I’ve been so busy telling you you’re the last one who won’t set anything down that I never once checked whether I had.” A pause. ”Turns out I’m a hypocrite. Write that down. Fact-check it. It’s accurate.”

”I’d never,” I said, and held her, and the pot was warm against my back.

Across the camp, Wen’ai was teaching a ring of Tao Tao’s Rememberers the whole lullaby, all the way through, verse and all. Ji Lan sat among them — Mythic and entirely uninterested in it, a link in the chain, learning. The First Author studied her list, eleven thousand four hundred and three now, and falling, and beside it she’d started a second page, a rougher one, headed not with names but with shapes — the world’s aches, waiting their turn. Bai Qing had spent the day helping a town hold its own gap and looked content in the exact shape of her life. And at the far fire, Tao Tao and Lu were teaching a knot of townsfolk how to read the silence in their own square, the founder of the rememberers and the man who built the sword, bent over the ache of a place neither of them came from — still not friends, still not forgiven, but building the same thing, at the same fire.

We came looking, that season, for the ones nobody kept, and we found out the world had been keeping them all along — in the shape of every silence they left behind. My partner taught a whole world to read its own missing, got dragged up a ladder she despises for her trouble, and then let me hold her for one night, which is the rarer miracle of the two.

There is a whole nameless ocean still down there. But it isn’t unreachable anymore. It’s just far, and we are learning to read the way home in the exact shape of what we lost — one silence, one empty chair, one unfinished lullaby at a time.

The world is reading itself back. And it turns out it always knew, in the shape of the holes, exactly who it was missing.

We have, after all, a whole world to bring home. Even the ones whose names only the dark still knew.
