Please Stop Spreading Rumors About Me — They Keep Coming True

Yun Shu asked me in the middle of an argument about drainage.

’We should get married,’ she said.

I put the shovel down, looking at her. ’What?’

’Married. You and me. I’ve thought about it and decided I’d like it.’ She kept digging, not even looking up. ’Don’t make a thing of it.’

’You’re proposing to me in a ditch.’

’I’m proposing to you while working. You can have the ditch, or you can have me going down on one knee in front of eleven hundred million people — and I want you to think very hard about which of those you’d actually survive.’

’The ditch,’ I said. ’Definitely the ditch.’

’Good.’ She threw another spadeful out, dust flying everywhere. ’That’s settled. Pass the other shovel; this is your drainage problem as much as mine.’

I’ve been told since that this isn’t how it’s supposed to go, but honestly? I wouldn’t change one word of it.

We wanted it small. Six people, a fire, and somebody to say the words.

’You cannot have a small wedding,’ Xue Ningzhi said.

’Watch me.’

’Lin Bo.’ She sat down with the tired patience of a woman who’d already explained this twice. ’There are four thousand people camped within a mile of this fire on an ordinary Tuesday. There are eight million returned souls who believe they owe you their lives. When you marry, they will come. Not to intrude — they’ll come because they love you and they want to stand somewhere near it.’

’Then we don’t tell anyone.’

’You are bonded to a magical publisher.’

’I would never,’ said the Scroll, in a voice that meant it absolutely would.

’See,’ said Xue Ningzhi.

Tao Tao, who had been listening from the woodpile with an expression of unbearable joy, said, ’Also I’ve already told about nine hundred people.’

’Tao Tao—’

’I told them not to come!’

’Which,’ said Xue Ningzhi, ’is how you tell nine hundred people to come.’

We fought about it for a week, and then Bai Qing solved it in about nine words, the way she does.

’Let them come,’ she said. ’Just don’t let them in.’

’That’s the same thing.’

’It isn’t.’ She set down the wood she was carrying. ’They can stand on the hill. All of them, as many as want to, even all the way to the sea if they like. The fire is the fire — six people and a pot, just like you wanted. They aren’t coming to be at it, Lin Bo. They’re coming to be near it. Those are different things, and you keep mixing them up.’

I thought about it.

’That’s the cloth,’ I said.

’It’s just manners,’ said Bai Qing, and picked the wood back up.

Ji Lan came to me two days before with a request I didn’t expect.

’I don’t want to tell it,’ she said.

’You tell everything.’

’I know. That’s why.’ She was turning a pen over in her fingers, not writing. ’If I tell it, it becomes a story. That’s not me being modest, it’s just true — I’m good at my job, but the minute I put it down, it stops being an evening you had and starts being a thing a hundred thousand towns own.’ She shrugged. ’You’ve had every other night of your life taken and made into something. Have this one as just a night.’

’Somebody’ll tell it anyway.’

’Somebody will tell it badly,’ she said, ’which is exactly what you want. Badly means it stays yours.’ She put the pen in her pocket. ’Let a drunk cooper from Reedmoor be the authority on your wedding. He’ll get the soup wrong and everyone will argue about it for forty years.’

’That’s the nicest thing anyone’s done for me this year.’

’Yes, well.’ She was already walking off. ’Don’t tell anyone. I have a reputation.’

So we were married at our cook-fire in the fen, six of us in the ring and the whole world on the hill.

I’ve been given the count since and I refuse to write it down, because the number isn’t the point and I dislike what it does to the story. What I will write down is what it looked like from where I stood: our fire, Granny Fen’s pot on it, and then a dark hillside going up and back with lights on it — further than I could see, all the way over the rise, and quiet. That was the part that undid me. A hillside with that many people should have been deafening, but they’d decided, together, without anybody organizing it, to be quiet so we could hear each other.

Yun Shu wore her own clothes. I wore the coat.

Mu Chen said the words, because his voice had come back, and because Yun Shu asked him — he cried through the whole thing, but he got them right anyway. Tao Tao held the cup and shook. Bai Qing stood at the edge of the firelight where she always stands, and when I caught her eye, she gave me that small nod she gives when a thing is well-built and will hold. Ji Lan didn’t tell it. She asked to be the one who wouldn’t, and she stood there with her hands empty, her face wet, letting somebody else’s night be just that.

Su Yue sat on an upturned bucket, ate two bowls of soup, and told everyone within reach that they’d been at the first wedding they’d ever attended, the soup was bad, and they intended to come to more.

Xue Ningzhi read out a list of everything that could go wrong, folded it up, put it in her sleeve, and didn’t read out the rest.

Lu stayed up on the hill, away from the ring; he chose that spot, not us. Tao Tao brought him a bowl. She’s still not over what happened. But she brings him a bowl anyway.

Ping was somewhere out on that dark hillside too, or so I’m told. He was reading names by lantern light because he had a quota to hit and wouldn’t stop for a wedding. That’s exactly the kind of thing I’d expect, and honestly, I’m glad.

And the First Author sat next to Su Yue with a look I’d never seen on her in all the years we’d known each other—she looked like a woman who had finally put down everything she was carrying.

Rumors started before the embers of the fire had even died.

By the end of the week, the story going around was that I’d married Yun Shu on a hill made of the bones of the dark, that the whole world had knelt down at once, and that the pot on our fire was Granny Fen herself—returned, in pot form.

The Scroll brought me every single version with a huge grin.

”Talent. Here’s a new one. They say you cried so hard a river changed its course.”

”I did cry.”

”Not at a river, talent. Want me to put out a denial?”

I thought about all the denials I’d filed over the years. Three of them became best-selling pamphlets. One of them is still being performed as a stage play in two provinces — it’s bad.

”No,” I said.

”...No?”

”Let it run.” I leaned back. ”It’s a good one. The pot part is funny.”

The Scroll went quiet for a second.

”Talent,” it said, ”do you realize this is the first time since I’ve known you that you haven’t tried to stop a story?”

”I know.”

”Can I note it?”

”Note it.”

DING. Reach: everyone. Belief: rising. Denials filed: zero. Talent — I’ve been publishing legends about a man who spent his life trying to crush them. I’ve logged three hundred and eleven of his denials. Every single one made him stronger, which he hated, which just made the whole thing funnier. Tonight he read a story about himself that was false, laughed at the funny part, and told me to leave it alone. Nothing is at stake. Nobody needs saving. It’s just a dumb story going around about a tired man who got married in a ditch-digger’s coat, and he doesn’t mind. I think this is the ending. Was this ending helpful?

So: a small, loud life.

It’s small. I wake up, and there’s a drainage dispute, or a farm with eleven people and a nine-hundred-year-old claimant on it, or some woman returned from a ghost province who just needs someone to sit with her while she learns the new word for bread. I’m not saving anything. I’m mostly just listening to people argue about land.

It’s loud because all of them are in it. Tao Tao shouts up the path most mornings before I’m even awake. Su Yue claimed the second tent and is teaching themself to cook — badly, and competitively. The Scroll reports to Heaven every year and has never had a reply, yet every year it says it doesn’t care. Mu Chen trains healers. Bai Qing walks. Ji Lan writes. Xue Ningzhi keeps a list of everything that could still go wrong; the list is getting shorter, but she keeps it anyway.

Six million names are still unread. Ping is working through them. It’ll take him the rest of his life, which I suspect is the deal he wanted all along.

And every few weeks I go down to the bottom of the world and sit with something very old and very light that doesn’t hold anything anymore, and I tell it whether the harvest was a good one and whether people were happy.

Yun Shu says the coat needs mending at the elbow. She’s right. She’ll do a bad job of it, and I won’t let anyone else touch it, because of what’s stitched inside the collar where nobody else can see.

Please keep spreading them. All of them. The sneeze, the pants, the demon lord, the river that changed course, the pot.

They’re going to come true anyway. That’s kind of the point.
