Please Stop Spreading Rumors About Me — They Keep Coming True

Dawn on the fortieth day hit the fen, just grey and quiet like any other morning. I guess I expected the sky to pull a trick or something.

Everyone was right where they needed to be. It still feels weird to think about it — not the scale of the thing, but the order. Eleven hundred million people woke up before the sun, hiked to the spots on Mu Chen’s chart, and just waited; the fishing fleets drifted into the shallows with their arms locked together, which was Tao Tao’s fix for the boat situation, and it turned out to be the right one.

Bai Qing was running the show. Mu Chen had the rotations and his slate. Tao Tao had every hand the movement had ever seen. Ji Lan was telling the story. Yun Shu had the shapes, a list, and a pencil stuck behind her ear. The First Author had her own list — eleven thousand four hundred and one names with one more underlined at the very top — and she’d been gripping it so tight her knuckles were basically white.

I had the room.

’Say it plain,’ I told Ji Lan while we waited. ’No fancy stuff.’

’It’s the biggest morning in the history of the world.’

’I know. Say it plain anyway.’

She looked at me, gave a wet laugh, and shredded the draft she’d been obsessing over for a week.

When the first light hit, she told them: Hold on to each other. Take your share. If it gets to be too much, put your hand down and somebody will take it; nobody is going to think less of you for it. That was it. The best thing she’s ever written was only twenty-nine words long.

I went down at first light. I’ve made that walk more times than I can count, but that was the last time it ever felt like walking toward something scary.

’It’s dawn,’ I said.

’Yeah.’

’You can still take another forty days. A year, even. Nobody up there is going to say a word, and if they grumble, they can grumble at me.’

’I know.’ A long pause. ’Is the soup man scared?’

’Terrified.’

’Good,’ it said. ’Then we’re the same, and I don’t want to do this with anyone who isn’t scared.’ The cold shifted in that way it always does. ’Go up. I don’t want to do this while you’re standing down here in the cellar.’

’I’m holding the room from up there. You’ll feel me.’

’I’m going to feel all of them.’ Something in the dark finally let go. ’Lin Bo. If this goes wrong — if I did the math bad and it takes them — put it on the record that they said yes. They counted themselves. I didn’t force it on them.’

’It’s on the record,’ I said. ’The Scroll wrote it down twice.’

’Then go.’

I went up.

It opened its hands a little after dawn, and I’m going to tell this straight, because every version I’ve heard since has been overdone, and the real thing never needed the extra fluff.

It rose out of the bottom of the world like water through a crack in the floor. It wasn’t dark and it wasn’t light. It was heavy — that’s the only honest word for it — just the weight of every lost thing hitting eleven hundred million people at once, and it was so much more than any of us had imagined that for about four seconds, I was sure we’d made a massive mistake.

Then the world caught it.

I felt it sink into them — not into me, but through me and past me, out into every hand on every road, spread so thin that no single person had to carry more than an armful. A woman in Ashford dropped to one knee, but her neighbors braced her, and she stood back up. The mountain hold held. The fishing fleets held steady in waist-deep water, and the old men at the ends of the lines were the last ones needing a break. Saltreach held. Reedmoor held. The Unnamed Hundred sat in their silence and didn’t carry a thing, and nobody cared because the towns next to them just picked up the slack.

Four hundred and six thousand hands dropped in that first hour, said the word, got their relief, and jumped back into the line. Not one of them faked it. Mu Chen had drilled that into ninety towns until his voice gave out, and when the day finally came, not one person cheated.

Nobody drowned.

That’s the sentence. That’s the whole morning in two words, and I’m putting it down again because I spent years terrified it was going to end with a different two words. Nobody drowned.

Then they started coming up.

You have to get this — the ocean is people. That’s what none of us had really held in our heads until it was actually happening. The weight wasn’t just a thing; it was eight million, six hundred and forty thousand and nine of Ping’s, plus eleven thousand four hundred and one of the First Author’s, plus Yuhan’s valley, and the drowned first age underneath it all, and every nameless soul the world had ever read out of an ache or a quiet room or a stone that nobody had ever plowed.

They came up into their own names, spoken out loud, in ten thousand towns, by people holding lists.

Rin read for six hours straight. Old Wen kept at it until her voice gave out, then she just pointed to the next name, and a local boy read it for her. Yuhan read every name from their whole valley, everyone, then started on the strangers. The First Author read her eleven thousand four hundred and one names out loud in order, which took almost the entire day, and she never once sat down.

Tao Tao read Ping’s.

She hit it around midday — it was right where it belonged, tucked in with the others because she’d refused to let them move it — and she stopped. Lu went totally still beside her, and then she said it out loud in that clear, flat voice you use for any name.

”Ping.”

He appeared on the road about twenty feet away. Just an old clerk in a grey coat with ink-stained fingers, looking around at a field full of people holding lists.

Nobody cheered. I want that understood. Nobody cheered, and nobody spat, either.

”You’re offered,” Tao Tao said. ”Same as everyone else. You can stay or you can go back; nobody will stop you either way.”

Ping looked at the field for a long, quiet moment.

”...What are they doing?” he asked.

”Reading names.”

”How many are left?”

”Of yours? About six million.”

He stood there for a second. Then he walked over, picked up a sheet from the closest pile, and sat down in the dirt, and started reading names out loud in that dry clerk’s voice, because it was the only thing he’d ever known how to do.

Tao Tao watched him, her jaw set tight.

”That’s not forgiveness,” she said.

”No,” said Lu.

”Good.” She turned back to her own sheet. ”Read.”

Su Yue came home last, right at evening, when the weight was spread out and the world had held for a whole day and the shore was still standing.

The Scroll asked me. It couldn’t really get the words out right, but I said yes.

It went up the sky like everything else does now — not one light reaching, but the whole world, every town that had spent two years writing letters, lifting one name at once. Bai Qing held the floor. Mu Chen held the load. Tao Tao held the hands. I held the room, and I didn’t reach, not even then, even though both my arms were aching to.

And the Lantern of the Nine Skies came down out of the top of the sky onto a shore built out of eleven hundred million people, and it brought back everything they’d been carrying for a thousand years, and the shore just took it, and held.

They landed in the fen about thirty feet from our cook-fire, which I’m told was Yun Shu’s math and definitely not an accident.

They weren’t tall. That’s the first thing I noticed. A thousand years of songs and the brightest name there ever was, and Su Yue was just a small, tired person standing in the mud in front of a soup pot, looking around at the crowd like someone who arrived at a party way too early.

Then they said, ”Oh — I did warn you about this,” and burst into tears.

The First Author got there first. She didn’t say a word. She hasn’t mentioned what passed between them, and I haven’t asked.

The Scroll went to them on its own, slipping off my shoulder, which it’s done exactly twice in all the years I’ve carried it.

”You read all of them,” it said.

”Every single one,” said Su Yue. ”Some of them twice. The one about the green door, I read about forty times.”

”I wrote that one badly.”

”You wrote it perfectly. Hello, old friend.” They put a hand flat on it. ”You kept me lit.”

”Yes,” said the Scroll, and then it didn’t say anything else for a long time.

At the bottom of the world, there was nothing holding anything.

I went down that night because someone had to, and because I wanted to. It was the strangest thing I’ve ever felt — the cold was still there, and the dark was still there, and it was empty. Not gone. Just not full.

”Are you all right?” I said.

A long silence.

”I don’t know,” it said. ”I am very light. I don’t like it yet.”

”That’s allowed.”

”Did anyone drown?”

”Nobody drowned.”

”...Say it again.”

”Nobody drowned. Not one. Four hundred thousand people put their hands down and got relieved and went back in. Nobody drowned.”

The silence at the bottom of the world went on so long I thought it had stopped listening. Then it said, ”Then I can sit down,” and something in the cold settled, the way a house settles at night, and that was all it said.

The warm — very late.

I made the soup. There were four hundred people around our fire and I made soup for all of them, badly, out of a pot meant for six.

Su Yue had a bowl. They held it in both hands and didn’t drink much, and at one point they looked up at me and said, ”You’re the fraud.”

”I’m the fraud.”

”They were telling the truth about the sneeze?”

”They were telling the truth about the sneeze.”

”Good,” said Su Yue, with enormous satisfaction. ”I hoped that part was real.”

Tao Tao was zonked out, fast asleep on Ji Lan. It took three hours, but Mu Chen’s voice finally clicked back on — the first thing he did was mutter ’Rotate’ to absolutely nobody, just muscle memory, and then he started laughing until he had to sit down. Ping was hanging back, way out by the edge of the firelight with his list of names, and he wouldn’t budge. Lu went over and handed him a bowl, and they didn’t say a word. Bai Qing was just standing there in the shadows like she always does; I walked up, she told me ’It held,’ and I told her ’It held,’ and that was all. It was enough.

Yun Shu wandered over and plopped down next to me, carrying something folded over her arm.

’It’s tomorrow,’ she said. ’Past midnight. That’s the fortieth day gone, so now we’re into whatever comes next.’

’So, let’s see it.’

She did.

It was a coat. A regular one, made of good wool, dark, with a lining she’d stitched in by hand — and tucked inside the collar, where no one would ever know unless they were the one wearing it, she’d embroidered my name. Not the titles. Not the Calamity That Walks, or He Who Sneezed Once, or any of the billion other labels the world keeps slapping on me.

Just Lin Bo. Small and a bit messy, because she’s a terrible sewer.

’You mentioned once,’ she said, ’that the thing you wanted most, before all this started, was for one person to remember you had an actual name.’

I couldn’t say a thing.

’It’s for after,’ Yun Shu said. ’You said you wanted a small, loud life. You can’t have one of those when you’re a legend. You need one inside a coat.’ She shoved it into my hands. ’Put it on, you ridiculous man. It’s freezing.’

I put it on.
