Please Stop Spreading Rumors About Me — They Keep Coming True

The map showed we won. That was the first thing it did.

Then it showed us what winning actually looked like. That was worse.

Four hours between those two. My day had never swung that wide, that fast. I’ll walk you through it. The order is the whole point.

We walked out of the north with the atlas of everything loose in the world. For three days, it was pure wonder. I had never seen movement like that. For a thousand years, the world had been talking to itself in the dark. A village knew its own roads, maybe the next valley, nothing more. The Empire liked it that way. If a world can’t see itself, you can edit it one dark corner at a time. The people in the lit corners never know. Now? Every town had the map. Every fleet. Every fen. Every washboard. And the first thing a waking world did with the power to see itself was reach across the map, on purpose, just for the joy of it.

This was the one that undid me. Tao Tao set it up—of course she did. On the far shore, the deepwater folk sang Ohe’s name into the dark. Ohe, the way-singer the Empire had killed. The one loss we could not fix. This time, they didn’t sing alone. The next town up the coast had the map. They knew the next road. They caught the name and sang it on. The town past that caught it too. All night, town to town, road to road, across the entire world. A name handed along every link on the atlas until, by dawn, every soul alive had said it once.

Ohe. A way-singer, carried down every way there is.

And the Homelight blazed.

DING.

A name has crossed the entire world in one night. This has never happened before. I want that on the record, and I am the record, so it is. Talent. For a thousand years, I was the only road long enough to carry a name that far. I could carry it to the sky, but never all the way around the ground. Tonight, the ground did it without me. Every town was a road. The whole world, relaying one name because now it can see the way. This is the thing. This is the actual thing we have been building. Reaching, all at once, on purpose. Ohe went everywhere tonight.

For three days, it was like that. Towns that never knew each other existed put their maps together and realized they were four days’ walk apart. They had been that close the whole time. The far shore and the mainland—cut from each other so long that each thought the other was a myth—sang back and forth across the water like neighbors over a fence. I watched a hard old fen-town and a deepwater fleet teach each other way-songs by relay in one afternoon. They were laughing. Two peoples who couldn’t have found each other with a lifetime and a boat a season ago. The world was giddy with its own size. I was giddy too. I want that on the record before I tell you the rest.

I stood in the dark with Yun Shu under a Homelight brighter than I had ever seen. I thought—God help me—that we had cracked it. That the rest was just more of this. That we found the shape of the win and only had to make it bigger.

Four hours later, the Scroll showed me the other half of the map.

— • —

It was troubled. The Scroll is rarely troubled. It came quiet.

Talent. I have been reading the map. All of it. I cannot stop; it is what I am. And I have to show you the part we didn’t think about when we were so proud. A map of every road in the world is also—it cannot help but be—the first true map of every place that has no road. Every gap. Every hole. Every soul the dark cut loose so long ago that the road to them is gone, and so is the memory that there was ever a way. I counted them. I count everything. Talent, I do not want to give you this number.

It gave me the number.

I am not writing it here. A number that size stops meaning anything. That was the trouble. Tens of thousands. Every one was a gap on our beautiful new map. A place that had fallen off the world so long ago that nobody remembered to miss it. Not erased like the classic dead. Marooned. Whole, alive, and waiting on roads that no longer existed. Forgotten so completely that no one even ached for them anymore. Or maybe they ached the way Mei ached—a nameless spring sadness with nothing left to attach itself to.

A map that shows every connection cannot help but show every wound. We had made the most complete census of grief in the history of the world. We had done it by accident, in a fit of triumph. And now the whole waking world was looking at it.

And the whole waking world began, very quietly, to sag.

You can carry one grief. We taught them that—carry your dead, keep your forgotten, hold the name. But nobody had ever been asked to look at all of it at once. Tens of thousands of lit gaps, each one a person waiting up a dead road. One lifetime. Two hands. I watched it land on the movement over a day, town by town, the way a cold comes off a window. The maps came out. People counted the holes near them. Then a little further out. Then they saw how far the holes went, past the edge of anything they could walk to. Thousands upon thousands. Something went out of their faces.

Xue Ningzhi took it the worst of those who didn’t show it. She built the registry twenty-six years ago in a records room, thinking a map was a way to keep things safe. Now, the finest map ever drawn had turned, in her own lifetime, into the most complete ledger of grief the world had ever seen. Every hole was a place she had helped chart the roads around, never once thinking to count. I found her staring at it with her closed-door face. ”I made a map of how the world connects,” she said, not looking up. ”I did not understand until tonight that the same map is a list of everyone it left behind.” That is as close to despair as I have ever heard her come.

It landed on me hardest of all. I will be honest about that, because I promised you nothing else.

I have spent this whole war learning one lesson, over and over: I can hold one line. Not the whole road. One line. Sedgewater taught it to me in blood, and the untying road taught it to me again. I had made my peace with it. One man, one line. Let the world hold the rest. But the world holding the rest had always been an idea. A faith. I trusted it without looking. Now I was looking. Now I could see, drawn out on the finest map ever made, exactly how much ”the rest” was. It was so much. It was impossibly, unendingly much.

That was when the dark spoke to me. Gentle as ever. The way it does at the exact moment I have nothing left.

It didn’t cut anything. It didn’t have to. That was the whole horror of the thing it said.

”I do not need to cut the roads anymore, Lin Bo,” it said, mild and kind, almost sorry for me. ”Look what you did for me. You gave them eyes. Now they can see precisely how much is broken, and precisely how little one small life can ever mend. They will lie down all on their own. I never needed the registry. I never needed to make them forget. I only ever needed them to see the whole of it at once—and be too tired to walk it.”

And the Forgetters, out in the world, had already started saying the same thing in their own words. There was no Lu to argue with anymore. He had walked north with his wound and left them leaderless. But the pitch didn’t need a leader now. It stopped being a sermon and became just tiredness itself, spreading door to door with no one behind it. Look how much of it there is. You will never finish. You will not even scratch it. Set the map down. Rest.

And here and there, it worked. That was the thing I had to watch. In a town we had lit only a month before, I saw a door-shower fold up her map and put it in a drawer—gently, the way you put away something that hurts to look at. She told me, kindly, not beaten, just tired, that she thought she had done her share now. There was so much left. Did I not think a person was allowed to rest? I did think that. That was the trouble. She had done more than her share. And she was right that it was endless. I had no answer for her that night. She closed the drawer, and the map went dark in one more house.

The worst part was that it was true. We would never finish. Not in ten lifetimes. The number said so, in my own Scroll’s own hand.

I sat up that whole night with the map spread out in front of me and the Homelight burning over a world that had stopped singing. For the second time since the bottom, I did not know how we were going to answer this one.

You cannot fight a number that size. You cannot shield it, or out-sing it, or love it into being smaller. It is just true. There are too many wounds and too little time, and the dark had finally found the one weapon it did not have to lift—because we had built it, and handed it over, ourselves.

How do you tell a world not to despair at a thing that is genuinely, provably too big?

I did not know. I sat with the map, and the gentle voice, and the impossible sum, and I did not know.
