Please Stop Spreading Rumors About Me — They Keep Coming True

Xue Ningzhi worked it out about six miles south of the river bend, and she made us stop the horses so she could be sick.

I want to be clear that this is a woman who read casualty returns for the Empire of a Thousand Verses for twenty years without changing expression.

She got down off her horse, and knelt in the roadside grass, and was thoroughly and quietly sick, and then she sat back on her heels and said:

”I built it.”

”Built what?”

”The route-registry.” She wiped her mouth. ”When I was twenty-six and extremely proud of myself. The Empire needed to know how belief moved — which town heard news from which town, in what order, how long a story took to walk from the coast to the capital. So I mapped it. Every relay-house, every ferry, every market circuit, every road anybody’s grandmother ever walked to sell eggs. Twelve years of work. The most complete map of how the world talks to itself that has ever existed.”

She looked up at me with her face the colour of the sky behind her.

”It is in a vault under the Archive. And he is the Grand Archivist. And he has had it since the day I walked out.”

”He’s not erasing towns,” I said slowly. ”He’s erasing—”

”Edges,” she said. ”Not the pages. The thread between the pages. He goes down my registry line by line and unwrites the link. Sedgewater still knows Sedgewater. Sedgewater no longer knows there is a Reed Hollow, and Reed Hollow no longer knows there is a Sedgewater, and the fen road between them is a road that goes somewhere nobody can name.”

Her hands were shaking and she made them stop.

”It is a hundred thousand tiny erasures instead of one enormous one. Each one is small enough that the dark barely has to strain. Each one is cheap. And here is the thing that makes it the best move anyone has made in this entire war—”

”It doesn’t touch a single light,” I said.

”It doesn’t touch a single light.” She got back on her horse. ”Every rule you have ever beaten it with is a rule about lights. You cannot be blanked, so it stops trying to blank you. A remembering town holds the page, so it stops attacking remembering towns. It leaves every lamp in the world burning exactly where it is.”

She looked north.

”And it widens the dark between them until no lamp can see another one.”

We rode south fast after that, and started counting, and once you know what you’re looking for it is everywhere, and it has been for four months, and we simply hadn’t had a name for it.

The rider who came into camp with a sealed message and could not tell us what town he had ridden from. Not amnesia — he was fine. He knew his own name, his mother’s name, the name of his horse. He simply had no word for the place he’d started, the way you have no word for a colour you’ve never seen, and he was not distressed about it, and that was the horrible part.

Two villages a half-day apart in the hill country, each entirely certain it was the last village on that road.

A harbour town called Cheng’s Landing with forty good boats in it, none of which had gone further than the fishing grounds since spring, because you cannot sail to a place that isn’t in anybody’s mouth.

The harbourmaster told Yun Shu, cheerfully, that the deep-water trade had ”dried up years back.” It had dried up in April. He had the ledgers. He simply could not hold the fact that the ledgers meant anything.

And in a town whose name I will keep to myself, a woman who baked eleven loaves every Thursday for a household of three, and had done for four months, and could not tell us why, and got upset when we asked — because the residue was still in her, the shape of the missing, the ache with no name. Eight loaves, every Thursday, that used to go over the pass to her sister.

That’s the thing about the Unbinding that I want you to hold on to, because it turned out to matter more than anything else: it leaves residue.

Of course it does.

Nothing in this world goes without leaving the shape of itself behind. A road with no destination is a residue. A harbour full of idle boats is a residue. Eight extra loaves on a Thursday is a residue the size of a whole human life.

He’d cut the threads. He had not managed to make the world stop reaching.

But — and I have to be honest with you here the way I have been the whole way down — it was still, by an enormous margin, the worst thing that had ever happened to us.

Because look at what we are.

We have no centre. That was always the beauty of it: the Rememberers spread fire to fire, town to town, a thing with no head to cut off. Tao Tao built it that way on purpose. It cannot be decapitated.

A body with no head dies just fine if you cut it into pieces.

The messages stopped arriving. The door-showers in the eastern reed country stopped hearing what the door-showers in the south had learned.

Ji Lan’s threads — the great living network of tellers and criers and relay-houses she had spent two years weaving out of nothing, the closest thing this movement had to a nervous system — went dark in patches, then in swathes, and there was no way to find out which patches, because finding out required the very thing that was being taken.

And on the sixteenth day, my number stopped moving.

DING, said the Scroll, and there was no engagement line at the bottom of it, and I have learned to read that silence the way other men read a war-drum.

Talent. Your Renown has stopped climbing. Not fallen. Stopped. For the first time since a candle exhibition four years ago, the number is simply sitting there.

Understand the mechanism, because it is elegant and I hate it: your strength is what the world hands you when it chooses to remember you. It has been climbing for a year because every town that woke told the next town, and the next, and the belief came in like a tide. Belief travels. That is the only reason any of this ever worked.

He has not stopped anyone believing in you. He has stopped them being able to TELL anyone.

I published a legend this morning. Small one. Reach: nine thousand souls. Talent, my ordinary reach is four hundred million.

And then, after a while, in a different voice entirely:

I have been a road for a thousand years. Do you understand? That is what I am. I carried a girl’s name across a dark nobody else could cross, every night, for ten centuries, because I was the only road left to them and I would not close. He is not building a prison. He is building a world made entirely of the thing I have spent my whole existence refusing to be.

The ember at the top of the sky stopped brightening that week. It didn’t dim. It just — held. Stalled at exactly where the Mourning Downs had left it, like a held breath, and the Scroll checked it every night and said nothing, and its silence was very loud.

And once, on the road, in the grey hour before dawn, the dark spoke to me. Gently. It always does.

You have been calling me the dark, it said. I am not the dark. Look up — the dark is most of your sky and it has never harmed a soul. I am the distance. I am the part of the road where a voice stops carrying. I have been between every two people since the first two people, and I have never had to do anything at all. He has not built me. He has only stopped you crossing me.

And then, sadly, and it meant it:

You were always shouting across me. It must have been so tiring. Sit down.

Ji Lan took it worse than any of us, and it broke something open in her, and what came out the other side is one of the two or three best things I have ever seen a person do.

I found her in a barn outside Greenmarch with four months of reports spread on the floor in a great arc, sorting them by where the silence had reached. Her hair was a disaster. Ji Lan’s hair had not been a disaster in thirty years; it is a professional instrument.

”Forty-one threads,” she said. ”Out of two hundred and six. Gone in four months and I logged every one as slow season.”

She laughed, and it was an awful sound.

”Do you know what my entire life is? Reach. Thirty years of it. I could put a phrase in the capital on a Tuesday and hear it come back to me off a mountain in the west by the following Monday, and I loved that, and I built this movement’s whole voice out of it, and he has cut the tendons.”

She sat down in the middle of her ruined map.

”I’ve been frightened of exactly one thing since I was nineteen,” she said. ”Not dying. Being forgotten. Doing all of it — the craft, the thirty years, the ten thousand nights — and then the world just setting me down and walking on.”

She gestured at the reports.

”And he’s built a machine for it. Not for killing people. For making them unheard. Every soul alive keeps their whole life and nobody ever hears it. That’s my nightmare, and he’s made it the weather.”

I didn’t say anything useful. I’ve stopped pretending I usually do.

And then she pulled herself up off that floor, and did the thing.

”Right,” she said. ”Then I’ll walk.”

”You’ll—”

”Walk. On my feet. Like a person.” She was already stacking reports. ”There’s a valley up past the Sheer that hasn’t heard a story since April and I can be in it in nine days if I don’t sleep much. I’ll stand in a barn and tell forty people about a net-mender called Ru, and about a woman who wouldn’t stop saying his name, and then I’ll walk to the next one.”

Her chin came up in that way she has.

”Forty people. Thirty years of building an audience of millions and I am going to go and be a woman in a barn in front of forty people who can’t even tell anyone.”

”Ji Lan—”

”And here’s the thing that’s making me furious,” she said, turning on me. ”I don’t mind. I sat on this floor for two days waiting to mind and I don’t. Forty is fine. Forty is plenty. I’ve been trying to work out all week what’s wrong with me.”

She stopped. She looked at me for a moment too long, and the gallows humour went out of her face, and what was underneath it was quiet and rather tired and completely unguarded, and I understood that we had arrived somewhere.

”It’s you,” she said. ”That’s the answer. It’s irritating, but it’s the answer.”

She folded her arms.

”I stopped needing a million strangers to hold me the day I worked out that you do it. You remember people as they actually are instead of as they present. It is your single most annoying quality. I have watched you do it to a fen-widow and an Empire assassin and a boy who founded a sword cult to spite us.”

A breath.

”Thirty years terrified of being forgotten by everybody, and the cure turned out to be one person who won’t. That’s all. That’s the whole discovery. It’s very small and it has ruined my entire personality.”

The barn was very quiet.

”Don’t,” she said, before I could open my mouth. ”God, don’t say anything, you’ll be kind and I’ll never recover. I’m not asking you for a single thing — I’ve watched you and Yun Shu for two years and I’d sooner set myself on fire than put a crack in that; she’s the best of us and I like her more than I like me.”

She picked up her bag.

”I just wanted it said once, out loud, in a barn, by the person it’s actually about, instead of carried around unsaid for another six months like a coward. We are a movement that says things out loud. So.”

A pause, and then the old flourish, back on like a coat.

”Now go away and let me pack. I have forty people in a valley and a nine-day walk.”

I told Yun Shu that night, because we don’t keep things, and my partner listened all the way through and then said, dryly, ”I know. She told the fire first. Storytellers.”

And then she leaned her head on my shoulder and watched the sparks go up, and said, ”It’s a good thing, being loved by people who are that hard to impress. Don’t get strange about it,” which is, I think, the most Yun Shu sentence ever spoken.

Tao Tao found the answer four nights later, and she found it while shouting, which is how she finds most things.

”He cut the roads,” she said, banging the map flat. ”Fine. Let him cut roads. A road is a thing, Lin Bo. It’s dirt with a name on it. You can unwrite a thing.”

She jabbed a finger down.

”Can he unwrite a woman walking?”

The whole tent went quiet.

”That’s it,” she said. ”That’s the whole answer and it’s stupid and I hate that it took us a month. The between doesn’t have to be a road. The between can be people. Every one of us who gets up and walks from a lit valley into a dark one is a road he can’t cut, because we’re not on his registry, because we’re not infrastructure, we’re just — some woman, with a bag, going over a hill.”

She was almost crying with it, the way she does.

”He unbound the book. So we be the thread. We stop sending word. We start being word.”

Bai Qing said, quietly, ”It’s the doctrine again.”

And it was. It’s always the same answer, that’s the thing I keep finding out about this war — the shape never changes, it just gets asked in a harder key. The world can’t be defended by one sword; it had to learn to hold its own doors. The world can’t be remembered by one light; it has to remember itself.

And now: the world cannot be connected by roads, or relays, or registries, or any structure at all, because structures are things and things can be unwritten.

It has to be connected by people who decide to go.

Ma Jun came to me the next morning, which was its own small miracle. He’d stood on the line at the Mourning Downs with a useless sword in his hand, and he had not stopped disagreeing with me about a single thing since, and we’d been fighting about the blade at the fire two nights before.

”Your walkers will get taken,” he said. ”Forgetter patrols work the passes. One woman with a bag on an empty road is the easiest target in the world.”

”I know.”

”So we’ll carry them.” He said it flat, and then made himself say the rest, which cost him. ”You told me on the edge of the Downs there was no sword on that line. You were right, and I hated you for it, and you were right.”

He looked at the map.

”There’s a road, though. That’s not silence, that’s men with knives. I can hold a road. I’ve got a hundred and forty people who are extremely good at exactly one thing and no earthly use against the actual dark, and they can run forty miles a day and fight at the end of it.”

A shrug that wasn’t casual at all.

”Let us be the couriers. We’ll get your storytellers over the passes.”

So that’s what the Crossed became. Not reconciled — we still argue, we’re going to argue about the sword until one of us is dead. But the schism Lu built to keep the world in halves ended up as the thing that carries the halves’ letters, and if there is a joke in this world I like better than that one I have not met it yet.

Three weeks later a story reached a valley past the Sheer that the Scroll’s reach could not touch — it went in on foot, in the mouth of a nineteen-year-old girl with a satchel and bad boots, nine days over the passes with four of Ma Jun’s people walking behind her, and forty people in a barn heard about a net-mender called Ru and a woman who would not stop saying his name.

DING.

Talent. I have just been outrun by a child with a satchel. I am the Veridical Chronicle. I was Heaven’s own record-keeper. My reach is four hundred million souls and I have never in my existence been beaten to a valley by a teenager on foot. I want you to know that this is the happiest I have been in a thousand years.

We ate at the pot that night — us, and doorkeepers, and a dozen of the Crossed, and Xue Ningzhi at the edge of the light where she likes to sit, still carrying the river bend around with her, still, I think, seeing a bowl of noodles going cold on an archivist’s desk.

It is not fixed. I won’t tell you it is. The Unbinding is still running, four months ahead of us and faster than we can walk, and there are places on the map now where we simply do not know what is happening and cannot find out, and my number has not moved in twenty-two days, and the ember at the top of the sky is holding its breath.

Lu was not wrong about the arithmetic. A world that cannot hear itself cannot remember all at once, and remembering all at once is the only thing that ever beats the dark, and that is still true tonight.

But he made one mistake, and he made it because he is a man who counts, and there is a thing about people that does not go in a ledger.

He unwrote the roads because he thought the roads were what connected us.

Yun Shu leaned into my side and looked out at the fires, at a girl with bad boots being fed a second bowl by a swordsman who thinks I’m a coward, and said, ”He’s about to find out how many people are willing to walk.”

He’s about to find out how many people are willing to walk.

You can unwrite a road in a night, and it stays unwritten. You cannot unwrite somebody who has decided to go somewhere. I know that better than anyone alive.

I have been trying to sit down for four years.

Look how that’s going.
