The Villian Who Broke The Story

The ruined underground base trembled around them.

Dust drifted slowly through the air like falling ash, illuminated by the flickering remains of shattered luminite lamps buried beneath collapsed stone. Fires burned in scattered corners of the arena ruins, their orange glow casting jagged shadows across broken concrete and corpses alike. The smell of blood, smoke, and demonic mana saturated everything.

At the center of the destruction lay Kael.

Unmoving.

His body was sprawled against fractured rubble where he’d crashed after using the First Form of the Celestial Star Technique beyond the limits of what his current body could withstand. Blood stained the side of his head from where it had struck stone. His breathing was shallow, uneven.

And standing over him was Simon.

The former overseer of the Velvet Gang examination wiped demon blood from his blade slowly, staring down at the unconscious boy with narrowed eyes.

The image replayed itself in his mind again and again.

A D-rank crossed space fast enough to sever the head of a demon nearing High-Tier evolution.

Even now, Simon found it difficult to process.

The technique Kael used wasn’t crude acceleration. It wasn’t brute-force enhancement either. It had been something refined. Precise. A sword art so terrifyingly efficient that even Simon — an A-rank Executive Candidate of the Creed — had failed to properly track the movement.

That single strike had created the opening needed to destroy the demon.

Without Kael, everyone here would’ve died.

Simon exhaled slowly and stepped forward.

”I wonder where you’ve been hiding all this time, kid...” he muttered quietly.

The instant he moved closer—

A violent pressure exploded through the ruins.

”Stay away from him.”

Simon’s eyes widened.

Lillith appeared between them almost instantly, fast enough that even his instincts reacted a second too late. One moment the space near Kael was empty.

The next—

She was there.

Standing protectively in front of Kael’s unconscious body.

Her crimson eyes glowed unnaturally bright in the darkness, carrying an aura that no longer resembled the timid first-year student from Astraea Academy. Dark mana spiraled around her feet like smoke. A black symbol slowly formed on her forehead — intricate and ancient, pulsing faintly beneath her skin.

The atmosphere itself grew heavier.

Simon froze.

Shock crossed his face openly for the first time that night.

”What are you doing here?” he asked immediately, genuine disbelief in his voice. ”What about your mission?”

Lillith didn’t lower her guard.

Her eyes remained fixed on him with cold hostility.

”I was given two assignments,” she replied quietly. ”One was to protect Kael Draven.”

A faint pulse of dark energy flickered around her.

”The second was to infiltrate Astraea Academy and act as a spy.”

Simon stared at her.

Then slowly—

Very slowly—

His eyes moved downward toward Kael’s unconscious figure.

”Wait...” he muttered.

Something clicked into place inside his mind.

Draven.

Kael Draven.

His expression shifted instantly.

Fear.

Actual fear.

”He’s Madam Draven’s son?” Simon asked, his voice lower now.

Lillith said nothing.

But her silence was enough confirmation.

Simon’s stomach tightened violently.

I almost killed him.

The realization struck harder than the demon battle had.

The Draven Family wasn’t merely wealthy nobles. Most people only saw the surface — investors, industrialists, political figures.

But the people inside the underworld knew better.

Madam Seraphina Draven was not someone you wanted as an enemy.

Even the Creed treated her carefully.

Not because of political influence.

Because of what she was rumored to be capable of.

Simon suddenly understood why Lillith had been personally assigned to watch over Kael.

And more importantly—

Why Kael himself felt so strange.

His monstrous talent.

His unnatural composure.

The terrifying sword technique.

It all made more sense now.

A low hum filled the air.

Simon immediately stepped backward.

A massive crimson magic circle expanded beside them, glowing brightly amidst the rubble. Ancient symbols rotated slowly around its edge as demonic mana condensed into physical form.

Then someone stepped out.

The pressure alone silenced the surrounding chaos.

A mature woman emerged from the circle gracefully, her heels clicking softly against broken stone.

She resembled Lillith almost perfectly.

The same crimson eyes.

The same smooth red-toned skin.

The same unnaturally beautiful features.

But where Lillith carried hidden possessiveness beneath her calm exterior—

This woman radiated authority.

Pure authority.

Long dark crimson hair flowed behind her as her sharp gaze swept across the battlefield once before settling on Kael.

Then Lillith.

Evelyn.

One of the upper members of the Creed.

The pressure surrounding Simon intensified immediately.

He lowered his head instinctively.

”Lady Evelyn.”

Evelyn ignored him for the moment.

Her eyes remained on Lillith.

”Why would you allow him to come here?” she asked calmly.

Lillith looked away slightly.

For the first time since appearing, her intimidating presence faltered.

”I couldn’t exactly stop him,” she admitted quietly.

Evelyn stared at her for several long seconds.

Then she sighed softly.

At first glance it looked like disappointment.

But beneath it was something else.

Understanding.

Her gaze drifted toward Kael again, studying him carefully.

Even unconscious, there was something abnormal about the boy.

The faint celestial energy lingering around his body from the sword technique earlier still hadn’t fully faded.

Interesting.

Very interesting.

”At the very least,” Evelyn said slowly, ”I understand.”

Lillith looked back up.

”But do not allow your feelings to interfere with your mission.”

The words landed precisely.

Lillith stiffened slightly.

”...Yes, Madam Evelyn.”

Simon quietly pretended not to hear that part.

Evelyn crouched slightly near Kael’s unconscious body, her crimson eyes narrowing thoughtfully.

”So this is the boy.”

She observed him silently for a few moments.

Then something resembling amusement touched her lips.

”Madam Draven hid something extraordinary from all of us.”

Simon remained silent.

Because he agreed completely.

Evelyn stood again gracefully.

”I always wondered why she was so possessive over him,” she murmured. ”Now I understand.”

No ordinary human could perform what Kael had done tonight.

Even most geniuses couldn’t.

A D-rank shouldn’t have been capable of damaging a near High-Tier demon at all.

Yet he had nearly erased it in one strike.

Her eyes shifted toward Simon.

”And you.”

Simon straightened immediately.

”You passed your evaluation,” Evelyn stated calmly.

Relief flashed briefly across Simon’s face.

Then she continued.

”But requiring assistance from a D-rank during your own demonstration is embarrassing.”

Simon visibly flinched.

”Still...” Evelyn continued. ”You obtained the demon core successfully. Your promotion trial is complete.”

Simon bowed his head.

”Thank you, Lady Evelyn.”

Evelyn waved a hand dismissively.

”We’re done here.”

The crimson magic circle beneath them expanded again.

But before stepping into it, Simon glanced one final time toward Kael.

The boy remained unconscious beneath broken rubble while Lillith stood protectively beside him like a blade waiting to strike.

Simon smiled faintly beneath his exhaustion.

Interesting kid.

Then both he and Evelyn vanished into the circle.

Silence returned.

Or at least as much silence as could exist amidst the distant screams and collapsing remains of the destroyed underground base.

Lillith stood there for several seconds without moving.

The glowing symbol on her forehead slowly faded.

The crimson light in her eyes dimmed gradually until they returned to normal.

Only then did she kneel beside Kael.

Her expression changed instantly.

All the cold hostility she’d shown Simon disappeared completely.

What remained was worry.

Genuine worry.

She brushed dust carefully from Kael’s hair before checking his breathing again.

Still alive.

The tightness in her chest loosened slightly.

”You idiot,” she whispered quietly.

Her fingers trembled faintly against his cheek.

”You could’ve died.”

The words came out softer than intended.

Her eyes lowered toward the sword still loosely held in his hand.

The blade was cracked from the strain.

Just like his body.

Even unconscious, his muscles were still damaged from forcing himself beyond his limits to execute Guiding Light properly.

Lillith understood immediately what had happened.

He’d pushed his body harder than it could handle.

And somehow—

Somehow—

He’d succeeded anyway.

Her gaze softened.

There was something terrifying about Kael Draven.

Not just his talent.

Not just the way he adapted.

But the way he moved forward without hesitation once he decided on something.

Almost like he genuinely believed nothing in the world could stop him.

And perhaps even more terrifying—

Part of her was beginning to believe it too.

The ruined ceiling above groaned loudly.

The base wasn’t stable anymore.

Lillith slipped one arm beneath Kael carefully, lifting him against her.

He was heavier than expected again.

The thought almost made her smile despite herself.

”You really train too much,” she muttered.

Kael stirred faintly against her shoulder but didn’t wake.

Lillith glanced once toward the distant fires consuming the Velvet Gang base.

Then she turned away.

The night air outside hit her face as she emerged from the collapsing underground ruins carrying Kael in her arms.

Behind her, the remnants of the tournament continued to burn.

Ahead of her—

The story itself was beginning to change.
