Reborn as a Weak Beauty Pampered by All

Chapter 653: Chapter 653: Golden Hook Pear

Upon hearing this, Kang Yichen’s eyes lit up, but he couldn’t help but confirm, ”Auntie... are you sure?”

Without the slightest hesitation, Kang Li smiled and nodded, ”Auntie would never lie to you about such a matter, now think carefully; if you really like your uncle’s uniform, then decisively follow your uncle.”

”Thank you, Auntie. I will consider it seriously.”

Kang Yichen’s expression was exceptionally earnest.

”But remember, as a member of the Kang Family, no matter what you do, you must put forth your best effort and never be a deserter.”

This was Kang Li’s encouragement to her nephew and her expectation as well.

”Auntie, I will remember that.”

Kang Yichen nodded firmly.

About twenty minutes passed, and Kang Li’s party reached halfway up the hillside.

”Auntie, Uncle, look over there, there’s a date-plum tree!”

Suddenly, Kang Yihong called out excitedly.

”It’s a date-plum tree, Auntie. My third brother is right; it really is a date-plum tree. I see the fruits on the tree are ripe. Let’s go over and pick more to take home for the whole family to enjoy.”

Kang Yikai’s face was filled with smiles as he walked toward the date-plum trees, agreeing with his cousin Kang Yihong.

”Be careful.”

Kang Li cautioned, following closely behind her three nephews with Luo Yanqing.

”It’s a bit bitter.” Kang Yikai picked a small handful of date-plums and squeezed a bit into his mouth to chew, immediately his expression changed slightly, ”I thought they would be sweet!”

”Date-plums are also called golden hook pears; they have a sweet taste with a hint of bitterness, but this bitterness is not hard to accept,” Kang Li said with a smile to Kang Yikai. ”If you don’t like the taste, then pick less. In winter, after the frost has hit, they will taste much better than now.”

”Auntie is right. Date-plums that have been frosted in winter do taste better than those picked now,” came Kang Yichen’s voice.

Kang Yikai questioned, ”How much better?”

Kang Yichen replied, ”Sweeter than now, without the bitterness.”

Kang Yikai blinked his starry eyes, ”Really?”

”Of course, it’s true,” Kang Yichen responded.

”Why?”

Kang Yikai was like a curious baby at this point, which was not surprising. Although he was a member of the Kang Family, he had lived with his parents in the military compound since he was young; including this time, he could count his visits to his old home on one hand—precisely, three times.

Once when he was two or three years old, once three years ago, and now this time.

He had tasted date-plums before, but that was when he was a child and had tried some at his old home; now, he had no memory of them, and the youngster naturally couldn’t remember.

”Frost can directly remove the bitterness in the date-plums,” explained Kang Li.

”So that’s how it is! Then we will pick just a few and wait to see who has the good luck to find these date-plum trees after the frost in winter and pick them,” Kang Yikai said, a hint of regret flashing in his eyes.

At this moment, Kang Li picked a handful of date-plums and offered them to Luo Yanqing, ”Try these.”

”Okay.”

Luo Yanqing nodded, received them from Kang Li’s hand, and after putting a bit in his mouth, shortly after, he said, ”Indeed a bit bitter, but just the right amount.”

”It’s quite a unique flavor, isn’t it?” Kang Li asked with a smile.

Luo Yanqing hummed in agreement, then looked down at the small handful of date-plums Kang Li gave him, and then back at the date-plum tree. He smiled and said, ”These date-plums are indeed peculiar; the fruits are curved and irregular, looking a bit like chicken feet.”

”Exactly, they are quite nondescript, which is why the elderly in the surrounding villages often refer to them as golden hook pears.”
