Rebirth in the 90s: Her Counterattack and Redemption

Chapter 1471: Chapter 860: To Stay or To Leave (Part 2)

Mom, I understand your intentions completely, but we’ve been together for so many years, you should know what I’m like.

If I truly wanted to leave this family, nothing would stop me, and if I didn’t want to, you couldn’t force me out. No matter what, I’m not someone who can be controlled by others.

However, I can assure you, Mom, that up till now, all I want is to go out and work, earn money, make myself look better, and help Zhuangzhuang have a future. I haven’t thought about anything else at all.”

Li Zexia’s promise holds no real weight; she’s just saying she hasn’t thought about leaving the Wang Family at this moment, but she hasn’t promised she wouldn’t leave if given the chance.

Li Zexia’s mother-in-law sighed: ”Xia, over the years, how has Desheng treated you? You should know in your heart. Even though your dad and I complain sometimes, we haven’t truly interfered in your marital affairs, right?

If you truly want to leave, I doubt we could stop you. How about this: when Desheng and his dad come home tonight, we can sit down as a family and discuss it thoroughly, make a decision, what do you think?”

”Okay.” Li Zexia nodded, ”I wasn’t planning on leaving immediately anyway, I’m just tidying up in advance. The person picking me up won’t be here until tomorrow or the day after.”

Li Zexia’s mother-in-law quietly let out a sigh of relief. She initially panicked, thinking Li Zexia was leaving right away. If she had known it was just pre-planning, she wouldn’t have said all those words.

People are like that. Now knowing her daughter-in-law isn’t leaving immediately, she regrets lowering her bottom line earlier.

Zhuangzhuang relaxed his little arms, looking pitifully at Li Zexia: ”Mom, I’ll be obedient from now on. If Mom asks Zhuangzhuang what he wants to eat, Zhuangzhuang will say what he wants, not tell anyone else.”

”Xiaxia, Zhuangzhuang is so well-behaved, can you bear to leave him?” The speaker is Nanny Li; she had arrived earlier and was standing outside, overhearing most of the conversation inside.

Luckily, her daughter knows to leave room for herself, otherwise, even if she managed to rush over, she wouldn’t solve any substantial problem.

”Mom, why are you here?” Li Zexia frowned, ”I already said at home earlier, no one can change my mind about this matter.

Growing up, all the opportunities went to my brother. Now that I finally have the chance to step out, can’t you care about me for once?”

”When will you ever mature?” Mrs. Li pushed her daughter in anger, ”Even now, you dare say your brother took all the chances?

Did you study hard when you were in school? Huh? Did your dad and I say we wouldn’t support you? Huh? Ask yourself honestly, are these accusations fair to us?”

”Fine, let’s not talk about that. Back when I wanted to marry Desheng, you and Dad didn’t agree, wasn’t it because you thought the Wang Family was poor?

Now, my brother has a good job and my future sister-in-law’s family is rich too. Won’t that make the Wang Family seem even poorer?

I don’t want to live my whole life looking at other people’s faces. Now I have the chance to go out and earn money, make this family wealthy, why do you all want to stop me?”

”Do you think your dad and I thought Desheng’s family is poor?” Mrs. Li trembled with anger, ”Think carefully! Did your dad and I disagree because the Wang Family is poor?”

”You said you were worried Desheng was too honest, that he couldn’t give me the life I wanted, that I’d quarrel and ruin the family... In essence, you still thought he was poor, didn’t you?”

”Isn’t that the same thing? Your dad and I didn’t want you to ruin the Wang Family!” Mrs. Li sat heavily on the bedside, ”Your dad and I know exactly what our daughter is like; Desheng is honest, his mother-in-law and father-in-law are honest, and the family isn’t wealthy.

If it was earlier, Desheng could’ve found a simple-minded girl, but if he ended up with you and you caused trouble and broke the family apart, you’d be ruining the entire Wang Family, do you understand?”

”Ha...” Li Zexia laughed while clapping her hands, ”To hear my own mother say this... Ha, really broadens my horizons. It’s just baffling to think you’re my own mother...”

”Bang!” A harsh slap landed on Li Zexia’s face, delivered by Father Li.

The room fell into a deathly silence.

Zhuangzhuang pursed his lips, not daring to make a sound.

Li Zexia was utterly stunned; she’d never been hit before, and now it’s happening in front of her mother-in-law and son.

”Her dad...”

”In-law...”

Mrs. Li and Li Zexia’s mother-in-law spoke up simultaneously.

Father Li waved his hand, frowning: ”She needed this slap. At thirty years old, she wants whatever she desires, does she still think she’s a child?”

Father Li continued, looking at his daughter, ”You’re a mother now. If, when you were little, your mom and I neglected and left you, what kind of life would you lead, have you thought about it?

Zhuangzhuang is just six years old, but he’s more sensible than you, why? Have you thought about why? Huh?

He’s afraid of you, afraid that if he doesn’t listen, you’d neglect him. He’s inherently scared this family would fall apart; do you understand?”

”I...” Li Zexia’s eyes, once filled with anger, softened, ”I just want to go work, it doesn’t mean I want to break up this family.”

”Your promise, none of us dare trust.” Father Li bowed to Li Zexia’s mother-in-law, ”It’s our fault that we didn’t raise her properly, sorry for dragging you into it.”

Li Zexia’s mother-in-law awkwardly reached out her hand, quickly withdrew it and waved it, ”In-law, don’t... don’t say that.”
