She Lives without Regret in This Life

Chapter 633: Chapter 658: Zhang Hongmei’s Career Change

“Right! Where is Hong Mei?”

“I forgot to tell you,” You Li was peeling oranges for Dabao, and after hearing this, she handed the peeled orange to Dabao and said, “Hong Mei is gone!”

“Gone?” Sheng Ning suddenly had a very bad feeling. She thought about how Zhang Hongmei would get up to clean before dawn every day, how she would still be sweeping the yard when everyone else was resting, and how she would help out in the kitchen whenever she had free time.

The training tasks of the General Union Song and Dance Troupe were already heavy, and Zhang Hongmei was always thinking about performing well, fearing that a slight inattention might lead to her being dismissed or transferred somewhere else.

She worked very hard, but sometimes it inevitably seemed a bit pragmatic.

However, this was generally the case with comrades from the rural grassroots. They carried the hopes of their entire family, and it was not easy to get into the General Union, only to not be able to stay. Once they returned to their hometown, they were likely to be criticized severely.

“You don’t know yet! She was transferred, and we’re not clear where to. But she said she would write to us later; Dabao moved here after she left.”

A hint of melancholy flashed across Sheng Ning’s face; she hadn’t expected Zhang Hongmei to be transferred so quickly in this life. In her previous life, it hadn’t been like this at all. What exactly had gone wrong?

“I remember she’s illiterate, right? How will she write letters?” Chen Huaying sharply said, “I heard that the General Union is undergoing reforms, and a large batch of illiterate comrades will be dismissed.”

The Song and Dance Troupe, because of the character ‘文’ (literal) in its name, even had higher standards than an ordinary troop. They needed to be good-looking, have sweet smiles, and be capable singers and dancers. Literacy was an essential skill for the future, and the next batch of newcomers would all be literate.

“Chen Huaying, hold your tongue a bit,” You Li said unhappily. “Saying that, how sad would Zhang Hongmei be if she heard it?”

“Is there something wrong with telling the truth? Is it illegal?” She didn’t like Zhang Hongmei to begin with. When Sheng Ning had problems several times, Zhang Hongmei had kept her distance, fearing being implicated herself—such a person was not suitable to be a friend.

“No mistake, no mistake! Alright, it’s rare for all of us to meet, let’s not argue!” Sheng Ning, feeling a headache coming on, hurriedly intervened to avoid conflict.

“Chen Huaying, did you come to see me? Why did you come empty-handed? Usually when you visit someone in the hospital, don’t you bring fruits or canned syrup?” Lu Dabao pouted unhappily. Although she usually seemed simple-minded, sometimes she had truly unexpected insights.

Chen Huaying, feeling scorned, forgot to continue the topic of Zhang Hongmei with You Li, and scolding Dabao by tugging her ear, she said, “Are you a patient? Who has ever seen a patient who eats as much as you? Look at you, all rosy-cheeked—you wouldn’t even know how you might have been harmed to death.” She was really worried to death. Even Hai Lan dared to bully Dabao—outrageous!

Huai’an, standing outside and listening as the topic inside veered off, intentionally coughed loudly. Chen Huaying was going too far; he had asked her to pass a message, but she hadn’t mentioned a word since entering.

Chen Huaying was about to continue scolding but stopped abruptly when she heard the cough, shooting an irritated glare outside. “Sheng Ning, someone’s looking for you.”

“Really? Who is it?” Lu Dabao asked while stretching her neck and eating an orange.

“Is it Captain Xu?” You Li asked with a smile.

“No!” Sheng Ning shook her head; at this time, Living Yama should have already arrived in Country S. She wondered how he was doing? That godforsaken place was so cold in winter; could he have frozen, or encountered any danger?

“Cough cough…” Huai’an, seeing no reaction inside, coughed again.
