She Lives without Regret in This Life

Chapter 359: Chapter 368: The In-Laws Are Here

She definitely couldn’t betray her sister.

“Fine, fine, fine, you’re all in this together now, ganging up to bully me.” Shen Luhua pretended to be angry, “Tomorrow I’m going to run away from home.”

“Who would dare! Everyone knows you’re the one calling the shots at home. Isn’t that right, Dad?”

“Indeed!”

“Mom, you have to wait for sister to come back before you run away, or there’ll be no one to cook.”

“You little brat, getting cheekier by the day,” Shen Luhua feigned a strike, but Sheng Laosan stepped in to separate them.

“Dad, what do you think about me starting a small business in the city next year?” Sheng An tentatively asked.

Before Sheng Laosan could respond, Shen Luhua immediately objected, “Everything’s fine at home, why run off like that? What if you lose something? What if you’re taken advantage of? What if you’re scammed?”

A series of “What ifs” left Sheng An at a loss for words.

“Mom… I’m not a three-year-old child.”

“In my eyes, you’re still the little baby from before, who never grew up.” In Shen Luhua’s heart, An’an was still her precious little dumpling.

She didn’t ask for her to be incredibly rich or powerful in this life, she just hoped she could live safely and peacefully. As for the idea of making a break in the city, it should be dismissed right there.

“It was my sister who told me to go,” Sheng Ning pouted unhappily and pulled a face. “She said that after the New Year, I should go with her to the city, and she would help me find a job.”

“Really?” Sheng Laosan asked eagerly, “You’re not deceiving us? It’s not just your own wishful thinking, and you’re using your sister as an excuse, is it?”

“Why would I lie to you? If you don’t believe me, you’ll see when sister comes back for the New Year.”

Sheng Laosan, being an honest man, immediately believed Sheng An upon hearing this. He supported the idea wholeheartedly and even turned to persuade Shen Luhua, “If Ningning is the one who suggested it, then it’s a good thing! An’an has grown up, and since we can’t afford to send her to college, if she can rely on herself to get out of the countryside, I would die content.”

“What nonsense are you talking about? That’s not an auspicious thing to say,” Shen Luhua glared at Sheng Laosan, though she didn’t continue her objections.

Being unable to afford An’an’s college fees was always a thorn in her heart.

“Alright, I’ll trust you this time. But I want to hear it from Ningning herself when she comes back.”

The three of them chatted in the main room, when a loud voice came from outside the courtyard.

“My in-laws, please open the door.” Ever since Xu Qigang’s last visit, every time he met Sheng Laosan, he immediately started calling him “in-law.”

And he seemed so delighted to do so.

He was a bandit and a ruffian, thick-faced, so nobody thought it odd how quickly he had changed his tune. It was initially thought that Sheng Laosan, the honest man, would definitely not agree, but he consented so promptly and changed his address without delay.

These two families, although not yet married, were closer than some who were.

“Quick, quick, quick… the in-law is here.” Sheng Laosan, although he had difficulty moving, upon hearing the voice immediately asked An’an to open the door.

Sheng An slipped her shoes on and dashed to open the door.

Xu Xianxiong, tall and sturdy, came in while Shen Luhua busied herself pouring water and making arrangements for him to sit down.

“No need, no need, don’t fuss. I’m here today to invite you folks over to our place for dinner, to get acquainted,” said Xu Xianxiong, who recently seemed radiant wherever he went.

Just yesterday he received a phone call from his son in the county town, saying to have someone deliver the message personally that they wanted to get married right after the New Year.

“Wouldn’t that be too presumptuous?” Sheng Laosan said, though he was already getting down from the kang bed to look for his shoes.

Sheng An and Shen Luhua exchanged a look and couldn’t help but stifle a laugh.
