Sunblind Serpent: The Zodiac Without A House

Henry’s Stillglass Seal took thirteen heartbeats to settle.

The process resembled Marek’s without copying it exactly.

A thin transparent line appeared around Henry’s occupied blue scale first. The rest of the Seal adjusted afterward, following the broken geometry surrounding his black center. Faint blue movement travelled through several of the internal threads before disappearing.

Henry remained still.

”Any pain?” Clara asked.

”Cold.”

”Pressure?”

”A little.”

”Anything else?”

Henry waited. ”The lights feel farther away.”

Marek understood what he meant only after Henry explained it.

Before the Seal, electrical activity throughout the Exhibition Center constantly pulled at his attention. Power lines behind the walls, portable batteries, damaged extension cords, overloaded outlets and medical devices existed as separate disturbances that Henry had gradually learned to recognize.

The Stillglass had reduced that reach.

He could still identify electrical danger if he deliberately focused on it. His Mark no longer attempted to follow every available connection.

Henry chose his permitted movement carefully. ”I can recognize a foreign electrical condition without taking it into custody.”

The Seal tightened around his black center.

Nothing else happened.

”That is disappointing,” Cooper said.

Henry turned toward him. ”Were you expecting lightning?”

”A little.”

”You can stand beside the electrical panel if you want excitement,” Marek remarked.

Cooper immediately declined.

Clara went next.

Her existing green scale caused the Seal to behave differently. The transparent lines around it bent slightly toward one side before settling. Clara immediately noticed the change.

”It separated.”

”What did?” Marek asked.

”The disinfectant on your gloves. Your skin. The alcohol on the table. Before, they were all close enough that my Mark kept treating them as one problem.” She held her hand several centimeters above the examination surface. ”The Seal makes it easier to stop after recognizing what does not belong.”

Her permitted movement became narrower than Henry’s.

She could distinguish a foreign harmful substance from the person or material carrying it without drawing the substance toward herself.

Marek remembered his first attempt to examine Devin without opening a route.

The principle was the same, but the expression was different.

Cooper watched both applications with increasing concern.

When his turn came, he removed his shirt from one shoulder and examined his empty Mark as if it had personally arranged the situation.

”You said mine is harder.”

”Yes.”

”Because I have nothing.”

”Because we do not know what happens when you finally have something,” Marek corrected him.

”That sounds worse, honestly.”

”It might be.” Marek preferred saying this now rather than discovering it afterward.

The pressure behind his right ear returned while Clara cleaned the skin around Cooper’s Mark.

Celeste had remained absent throughout the first two applications, but now, she spoke, ”His Seal should begin with self and foreign.”

Marek kept his expression neutral.

Cooper was watching him.

”What are you thinking?” Clara asked.

”That his restriction should be simpler.”

She accepted the answer.

Marek directed the next question toward the connection. ”Why?”

”He has no established Case showing how his authority naturally specializes.”

The term caught Marek’s attention.

”Specializes?”

”The Sign is shared. The way a bearer learns to use it is not.”

Marek thought about Henry and Clara.

One recognized electrical conditions and failures in connected systems. The other separated harmful substances from the people carrying them. Marek understood injuries, conditions and transfer paths through the habits he already possessed from laboratory work.

Cooper had none of those patterns yet.

”What determines the specialization?”

”Understanding. Repeated work. What the bearer learns to distinguish reliably. Sometimes training. Sometimes necessity.”

That explanation was broad enough to remain useful.

Marek memorized it.

Cooper’s Stillglass settled over the empty Mark. Because no scale carried a condition, the first visible change occurred around the black center. A transparent ring formed there and remained nearly colorless.

Cooper counted thirteen heartbeats aloud.

At eleven, he accelerated.

”Start again,” Marek said.

”I did not skip one.”

”You shortened two.”

”My heart did not.”

Clara checked his pulse. ”You shortened two.”

Cooper stared at her.

”You were both waiting for that.”

They restarted.

This time the Seal settled properly.

Cooper’s permitted movement became recognition of self and foreign without opening custody.

Nothing entered his scales, because nothing attempted to.

Marek considered that a successful result.

For the next several hours, they worked.

The occupied-center section contained enough patients to test controlled recognition without forcing anyone to take a condition. Marek divided the records according to what the three could safely examine.

Henry reviewed patients whose collapse had happened near electrical equipment or system failures. Most showed no connection, which mattered as much as finding one that did.

Clara reviewed reports involving medication, chemical exposure, smoke, contaminated water, cleaning agents and industrial materials.

Cooper stayed with the simplest distinction.

Bearer. Foreign condition. Barring attempts.

He complained that Marek had given him the least interesting work.

Marek did not change it.

By the third successful examination, Cooper stopped complaining.

Marek wrote each rule on separate sheets.

CHECK YOUR OWN MARK FIRST.

IDENTIFY THE PERSON BEFORE THE CONDITION.

DO NOT SEARCH FOR A ROUTE UNLESS YOU INTEND TO OPEN ONE.

COMPATIBILITY DOES NOT ESTABLISH ACCEPTANCE.

STOP WHEN THE BLACK CENTER BEGINS PULLING.

The instructions were incomplete. That was unavoidable.

They were also more than the Ophiuchus bearers had possessed the previous day.

Marek began showing the procedures to two nurses assigned to their section. He deliberately left Stillglass out of the explanation. He described only what they should watch for: changes in breathing, involuntary reaching toward another Mark, and sudden pressure around the black center.

The nurses wrote everything down.

Henry noticed what Marek was doing before the other two. ”You are making this usable without you.”

Marek continued writing, ”That is the point.”

Henry remained beside the table longer than necessary.

Marek did not elaborate.

During the next dark period, he borrowed the facility evacuation diagram from the administrative station.

He had studied it before.

This time, he copied different parts.

The Exhibition Center had four public entrances, three loading areas, two emergency vehicle lanes and an older mechanical corridor beneath the western exhibition halls. The corridor had once connected temporary event utilities to the building’s exterior generator yard.

It was not part of the patient route.

That made it useful.

Marek marked every door.

He also copied the security rotation posted beside the supply desk.

The west mechanical corridor remained locked except during generator inspection and wastewater maintenance. The inner door used an electronic release. The exterior door had a mechanical emergency bar.

Beyond that was the service yard.

Beyond the service yard was the temporary quarantine fence.

The weakest section of that fence opened whenever wastewater and generator crews entered.

Marek checked the movement log.

The next scheduled service was during the final two hours of the dark period.

He folded the copied map and placed it inside his notebook.

The pressure behind his ear appeared before Celeste spoke.

”You are planning to leave.”

Marek continued reading the service log, ”I am reading.”

”You said that before.”

”This time I actually am.”

Celeste remained quiet.

Marek copied the vehicle schedule.

”You stabilized three people, gave them procedures, taught medical staff what to watch for, and now you are studying an external service route.”

Marek stopped writing.

She had noticed too much.

”I need them able to continue without me.”

”That is what I said.”

Marek closed the notebook.

For several seconds, only the ward remained.

A child cried near the registration line. Someone rolled an oxygen cylinder across the floor. The public-address system called another surname.

”My sister was transferred to the West District,” Marek said. ”My mother left with a civilian group going southwest.”

Celeste did not respond.

”The records are several days old. Nobody can tell me where either group is now.”

”You intend to search for them yourself.”

”Yes.”

”The facility will not authorize it.”

”I know.”

”You may lose the only reliable access you have when you return.”

”Then I will deal with that when I return.”

There was no complicated answer behind it.

Marek had stayed because people in front of him were dying and he could help them. Then the Ophiuchus patients began containing themselves, and leaving immediately would have meant abandoning a problem he understood better than anyone around him.

That reason had weakened.

Henry, Clara and Cooper could now recognize enough to prevent the easiest mistakes. The medical staff had written procedures.

It was not enough to solve the ward, but it was enough for Marek to leave it temporarily.

He opened the notebook again. ”You knew I had another reason for asking for those three Seals.”

”I suspected.”

”You still gave them to me.”

”They needed them.”

Marek agreed.

That answer was better than permission.

He returned to the service map.

The west corridor would open during the final two hours of the dark period. By then, Henry, Clara and Cooper would have nearly a full day of practice.

Marek closed the notebook.

”You are really going to do this,” Celeste said.

”Yes.”

”Even if they stop you from coming back?”

Marek thought about Mara.

Then his mother.

”Mara is fourteen. My mother is alone somewhere out there...” Marek glanced at the ward and continued, ”This place is probably the safest place in Linden right now.”

Marek paused.

Celeste did not answer.

Then, he said, ”I’ve never hated feeling safe this much.”

Marek started preparing.
