Sunblind Serpent: The Zodiac Without A House

The hand disappeared before the medical personnel reached Devin.

Marek remained beside the stretcher.

The black center appeared unchanged. It remained occupied by the same darkness he had examined before. Devin’s body continued breathing without any sign that the person had returned to it.

Clara checked his pulse.

Henry moved the temporary screen to prevent the nearby patients from seeing what had happened. Cooper stayed several steps away because nobody trusted him not to worsen his shoulder while trying to help.

”Did you see it?” Clara asked.

”Yes.”

”What was it?”

”I do not know.”

The answer no longer produced words inside Marek’s mind.

The Stillglass Seal prevented the Quiet Room from forming and stopped his Mark from opening toward Devin. He could sense the difference between the body and the Case, but the translated system remained silent.

That silence was inconvenient.

It was also the only reason his Mark had not immediately searched for a route to whatever pushed against the center.

The woman’s voice returned. ”Do not pull.”

Marek kept his hands away from Devin’s Mark. ”You saw it?”

”No.”

”Then how do you know?”

”You stopped breathing again.”

Marek ignored that. ”What could make the center move?”

”A bearer who remains conscious under self-custody.”

The term was unfamiliar, but the meaning was not.

Devin had become the condition inside his own Case. His body remained the Vessel. Acceptance had somehow been established. The Mark considered the result stable.

That did not mean Devin had stopped experiencing it.

”He may still be awake inside,” Marek said.

Clara looked at the black center.

Henry became quiet.

The possibility was worse than believing Devin had simply disappeared. Twenty-six people had already entered the same state. Some might have remained aware while their bodies continued to function unconsciously.

Marek placed two fingers near the outer edge of Devin’s Mark.

The Stillglass tightened against his shoulder.

He allowed only the permitted motion.

Observation without custody.

Pressure moved from Devin’s black center toward Marek, but the Seal prevented his own Mark from answering with a route. The sensation remained separate. One person contained. Another person observing.

There was no transfer or acceptance. Nothing tried to use Marek as a Vessel.

The hand pressed against the black surface three times.

It stopped for several seconds.

Then it pressed twice more.

Marek waited.

The same pattern repeated.

Three. Pause. Two.

Random movement did not usually repeat itself that neatly. Someone inside appeared to be trying to communicate.

”Something is responding.”

”To what?” Henry asked.

”I do not know yet.”

The medical staff wanted Devin transferred to another section for imaging. Marek allowed it because nothing they could do beside the stretcher would safely open the Case. The Stillglass had given him control, not an answer.

As the stretcher moved away, Marek noticed a fine line near the lower edge of the Seal.

A crack had formed.

It extended outward from the dull-gold scale toward the transparent boundary. It was shorter than his fingernail and reflected the same muted color as the scale beneath it.

”Is that normal?” he asked inside the connection.

”If it moves outward.”

”It is.”

”Then the Stillglass Seal is carrying the instability away from your Mark. Remove it when the crack reaches the edge.”

”How long do I have?”

”Several hours if you stop testing it against every dangerous thing you see.”

”That removes most of the facility.”

The woman did not disagree.

Marek watched Henry and Clara follow Devin’s stretcher. Cooper remained beside him. The student’s black center and thirteen empty scales had not changed since Awakening. No condition had entered them. He had also shown no clear specialization1.

It only meant nothing had happened yet. An empty Ophiuchus Mark might simply have had no opportunity to reveal what it would or could do.

Marek directed his attention toward the connection. ”Do you have more Stillglass Seals?”

”Not with me.”

”I need three.”

”You need more than three.”

”I know.”

The facility held thousands of Ophiuchus bearers. Twenty-six had already contained themselves. Others reported pressure in their black centers. Three additional Seals would not solve the problem.

They would give Marek three more people capable of helping.

”Cooper has no occupied scales,” he explained. ”That means we do not know what his Mark will take when it reacts. Henry carries an electrical condition. Clara carries a chemical one. All three are already helping with assessments.”

”You want to protect your companions first.”

”Yes.”

The woman did not respond immediately.

Marek understood how the request sounded. Thousands needed help, and he had selected the three people he knew.

However, familiarity was not his only reason.

”Henry recognizes electrical and system failures before they spread. Clara can separate harmful substances from the people exposed to them. Cooper has remained with us despite not knowing what his Mark does. If they become stable, they can help me teach others.”

”At least until we obtain enough for everyone,” Marek continued. ”We start with people who can help distribute the knowledge.”

”That is better reasoning.”

”It was already my reasoning from the very start.”

”You explained it after I questioned you.”

”You did not ask.”

The connection carried something close to amusement.

The woman explained that Stillglass Seals could not simply be handed from one bearer to another. The base material might be the same, but each Seal needed to copy the individual Mark. The permitted motion also depended on what the bearer already carried.

Henry could not safely use Marek’s calibration1. His blue scale contained a different condition, and his expression of Ophiuchus followed electrical and system hazards.

Clara required another pattern.

Cooper, whose scales remained empty, might require the simplest Seal and the greatest supervision. Without an existing Case to define his specialization, the wrong calibration could become the first rule his Mark learned.

”I can obtain blanks,” the woman said.

”How many?”

”Not enough for this facility.”

”That is not what I asked. I already know your supply is limited.”

The voice ignored his remark. ”Three.”

That was exactly what Marek had requested.

It was also suspiciously convenient, but he asked, ”What do you want in return?”

”Nothing yet.”

”That is not the same as nothing. An unpriced device usually costs more than a purchased one.”

”No.”

Marek accepted the distinction without accepting the offer completely.

The first Seal worked, but he still did not know where it came from, who manufactured it, or whether the woman had another purpose. He would inspect the remaining Seals before allowing anyone else to use them. Clara could test the physical material. Henry could examine any electrical or system response. Cooper could avoid touching anything until the other three finished.

Marek would tell them about the Seals. They needed to know about anything that could help control their Marks. He would leave out the voice for now. He still could not explain who was speaking to him or how she was doing it, and there was little point in giving the others another mystery they could not solve.

They needed to consent to wearing an unknown device. They did not need to know that the supplier could speak directly into Marek’s mind through a route he could not trace.

”The delivery cannot happen the same way,” the woman said. ”The facility is investigating the interruption.”

”Then do not interrupt everything.”

”That limits the available routes.”

”You controlled the ventilation, lights, electrical locks, and public-address system at the same time.”

”You noticed.”

The woman became quiet again.

Marek followed Cooper toward the rear medical station. Clara had returned from helping transfer Devin and was already checking the records of other patients who reported movement inside their black centers.

The middle-aged woman with the damaged cart entered the same aisle.

Marek recognized her but did not stop.

She had changed the stack of forms she carried. A plastic cup now rested beside several sealed medical packages on the cart. Her identification band remained visible. She paused when another patient asked where to submit a registration paper, then pointed toward the nearest desk.

Her answer could not be heard from where Marek stood.

She appeared ordinary.

The voice spoke inside his mind at the same time. ”The next delivery will require a smaller current.”

Marek’s attention shifted toward the woman before he stopped himself.

She was already moving.

The damaged wheel squeaked as the cart passed behind Clara.

Marek followed it for several seconds before returning his attention to the medical station.

He still could not prove anything.

The woman had noticed him staring before. The light beneath her sleeve could have come from an ordinary reaction of her Mark. Even her movements around the connection could still have another explanation.

There were simply more things to explain now.

”What should I call you?” he asked inside the connection.

He did not ask for a surname.

A false surname would tell him nothing. A real one might expose more than the woman intended and make her end the connection. One name was enough until he understood why she had chosen him.

The damaged wheel stopped.

Marek saw the woman’s reflection inside the dark screen of an unused medical monitor. She had turned her head slightly in his direction.

Her lips did not move.

”Celeste.”

Specialization, in the advancement system, means becoming more precise or technically developed within what the Sign can already do.Calibration means adjusting something so it works correctly for one specific bearer.
