Sunblind Serpent: The Zodiac Without A House

Marek closed the notebook over the sealed packet.

Henry reached the table several seconds later. He checked the ventilation opening before looking at the papers scattered across the floor.

”The fans should not be able to do that.”

”But they did.”

Security personnel were already checking the electrical panels. The interruption had affected the lights, ventilation, and public-address system without disabling the medical equipment.

Whatever caused it had selected which systems would stop. Marek kept one forearm across the notebook while Henry gathered the loose forms. The packet remained hidden between the pages.

The pressure behind Marek’s right ear had also disappeared.

The connection was gone again.

He waited until Henry returned to the occupied-center records before leaving the table. Marek told Clara he needed to wash his hands before examining another patient.

She glanced at the dried ink near his fingers. ”Clean beneath your nails.”

”I know.”

A temporary sanitation room had been built behind the assessment area. It contained two sinks, sealed wipes, a metal cabinet, and a damaged mirror that divided his reflection near the shoulder.

The door did not lock.

Marek placed an empty cleaning cart against it.

He opened the notebook beside the sink and removed the packet.

The transparent patch was slightly larger than his Mark. It bent when lifted but returned to shape. Thirteen fine patterns surrounded an empty center. Two blank tabs extended from opposite sides.

A faint pressure returned behind Marek’s ear.

It moved toward the back of his head before the woman spoke.

”Do not touch the center.”

Marek withdrew his finger. ”You stopped the connection.”

”I stopped speaking.”

The route still did not appear to pass through his Mark. Neither occupied scale reacted, and the black center remained unchanged.

”What happens if I place this incorrectly?”

”You may hold the wrong movement still.”

”That sounds worse than leaving it alone.”

”It can be.”

The woman instructed him to inspect the patch. There were no cracks, dark lines, or discoloration. The patterns remained motionless away from his body.

Marek exposed the Mark. The dark-red scale held Elia’s First Motion. The dull-gold scale contained the condition taken from the injured Taurus officer. The other eleven scales remained empty.

He cleaned the surrounding skin with a sterile wipe and waited until it dried.

The woman explained only what mattered. The transparent film held one temporary Astral shape. A mineral layer resisted sudden changes. Another copied the individual Mark. Thin internal threads spread pressure across the Seal. The final layer made the Seal recognize only the Mark beneath it. Once it copied Marek’s pattern, Henry, Clara, and Cooper could no longer use the same patch safely.

”What movement has this been prepared to permit?”

”None yet. It is an emergency blank with an Ophiuchus base.”

”That means it is unfinished.”

”It means you must decide what one action your Mark is allowed to perform.”

Marek did not like placing an unfinished device over his Mark. He liked allowing the Mark to act without control even less.

”What actions are Ophiuchus bearers normally taught to separate?”

”Recognition from intake. Custody from release. Refusal from examination.”

The woman did not mention subjects, transfer paths, Vessel compatibility, or incomplete Case Boundaries. She had given no signs that she knew about the interface.

Marek intended to keep it that way.

”Use recognition without intake,” she said. ”Your Mark reaches before you decide.”

Marek held the patch by its tabs and aligned the empty center with the black circle.

”Outer edge first. Do not press directly into the center.”

He placed the lower edge against his skin.

The patch attached without adhesive.

Coldness spread through the first point of contact but remained on the surface. Marek lowered the rest slowly. The transparent material settled over the broken scales before the center touched the black circle.

For one second, the Seal became rigid.

Then it softened against his skin.

”Thirteen heartbeats. Do not activate the Mark before the last.”

Marek counted.

The first heartbeat caused a thin line beside the dark-red scale to appear. The second traced the dull-gold one. The remaining lines moved across the patch and adjusted until they copied the shapes beneath them.

By the sixth heartbeat, the skin around his shoulder had become cold enough to tighten the muscle beneath it.

By the ninth, pressure gathered around the Mark. Nothing entered him. It remained outside and traveled through the lines. Whenever it collected near one scale, the Seal carried part of it elsewhere.

At the twelfth heartbeat, the black center pulled.

Marek reached for the patch.

”Wait.”

The thirteenth heartbeat passed.

The pull stopped.

Every line became visible at once. The two occupied scales retained their colors beneath the film. The eleven empty scales remained clear. A narrow ring formed around the black center without crossing into it.

”State the permitted movement,” the woman said.

Marek chose the wording carefully. ”I may recognize a foreign condition. I will not accept custody or open a route.”

The lines moved. The ring around the black center tightened. The condition inside the dark-red scale reacted first. It pushed against the Case Seal holding it in place, attempting to repeat the movement that had injured Elia.

Normally, that reaction would have sent pressure beneath Marek’s ribs. This time, the Stillglass spread the strain around his Mark until the condition settled again.

The dull-gold scale reacted next.

It also stopped.

Marek directed his attention toward the people beyond the wall.

His Mark recognized that foreign conditions existed nearby. It did not reach for them.

Marek attempted to enter the Quiet Room.

The sanitation room remained around him. Water continued dripping from the faucet. The damaged mirror continued dividing his reflection.

No words appeared.

He tried again.

Nothing.

The interface had gone silent.

The pressure behind his ear remained.

The Stillglass stopped Marek’s Mark from reaching beyond recognition, but the woman’s connection remained.

”Did it bind?” she asked.

”Yes.”

Marek did not mention what had disappeared.

”It should hold for several hours. Every time you force your Mark beyond the one action you permitted, the Seal will weaken faster.”

The pressure behind his ear weakened.

”Are you ending the connection?”

”For now. Learn what the Seal changes without relying on me.”

The pressure moved away from the back of his head before disappearing completely.

He covered the Seal with his shirt and removed the cleaning cart.

Henry, Clara, and Cooper were together near the rear assessment table when he returned. Cooper remained seated with his injured arm inside the immobilizer.

Marek did not tell them about the Seal.

He told them something else.

”The words stopped appearing.”

Clara immediately raised her head. ”When?”

”They became inconsistent after the Meridian equipment disconnected. They continued for a while, but they were incomplete. Now they are gone.”

The explanation was not entirely false. The interface had appeared through a Meridian-connected machine. Its external connection had failed. The Stillglass had only completed the silence.

Henry studied him. ”Can you still tell what is happening?”

”I can sense differences. Similar to the three of you. I do not receive translated words anymore.”

That was true while the Seal remained active.

Cooper leaned against the table. ”So the one useful instruction manual disappeared.”

”It was not an instruction manual.”

”It gave instructions.”

”It also gave incomplete answers.”

Marek asked them not to repeat the exact words in future reports unless questioned about something already documented.

The interface did not only make him useful.

It made him assignable.

Once officials treated its results as reliable, every unidentified condition could become Marek’s responsibility. A compatibility result could be used to argue that he was the correct Vessel. Someone could remove the word incomplete and use the rest as justification.

It was also connected to Project Meridian.

His father had disappeared inside a Meridian facility. Dr. Mercer knew about Ophiuchus before Day 367. Anyone who understood what Marek could see might stop treating him as an inexperienced bearer.

They might treat him as evidence.

Henry agreed.

Cooper agreed after asking whether this meant Marek was officially less useful.

Clara did not respond. Her attention had shifted toward his shoulder. ”Your Mark is quieter.”

Marek felt the Stillglass beneath his shirt.

He had not considered that Clara might notice the new boundary around it.

Her Mark recognized foreign substances separately from the people carrying them. She might not know what the Stillglass was, but she could recognize that the change had happened suddenly.

His explanation would not survive if he insisted the silence had faded naturally.

”It became quiet after the words stopped,” Marek said.

Clara continued examining him. ”That is not the same thing.”

”No.”

Before she could question him again, someone shouted from the occupied center section.

A patient had moved.

They reached the stretcher several seconds later. Devin’s body remained unconscious. His breathing had not changed. The movement came from his Mark.

The darkness inside Devin’s black center moved. Something pressed against the surface from within, slowly forming the outline of a palm and five spread fingers.

The shape of a human hand appeared beneath the surface.
