Chapter 2816: Chapter 2816: Tell The Truth

“It… it is a very long story. It spans decades.” Professor Shen noted nervously, adjusting his posture.

“Don’t worry about the clock. We have all the time in the world.” Yu Qi replied smoothly.

Professor Shen drew in a long, shaky breath, taking a moment to collect his scattered thoughts before beginning his confession.

“It all started roughly forty years ago. That was when Master Liang first approached me. He told me that he was eager to invest heavily in my personal scientific background and potential. At the time, I was young, ambitious, and desperately needed funding to advance my research career, so I eagerly accepted his financial backing. He proved to be as good as his word, providing unlimited capital for my projects. Thanks to his immense financial support, my early breakthroughs catapulted me to fame within the scientific community. It was only after I had established myself that Master Liang finally revealed his true objective, immortality. He wanted me to pivot my focus entirely toward conducting research related to achieving eternal life. Intrigued by the sheer scientific challenge of the concept, I agreed to spearhead the project.”

Professor Shen paused briefly, swallowing hard before continuing, “Master Liang moved with terrifying efficiency. He immediately funded the construction of this subterranean facility, which eventually became known internally as the Shenxie Research Centre. The main research initiative was officially code-named Project Origin. Master Liang personally supplied all the exotic raw materials required for our research. Our primary objective was to synthesise a refined, highly concentrated elixir of life. However, a major bottleneck arose the moment we successfully formulated the first batch of the elixir. We lacked human test subjects to evaluate its efficacy. That was when Master Liang stepped in, offering to go out and procure ‘volunteers’ for our clinical trials…”

“Volunteers?” Yu Qi interjected sharply, her eyes narrowing as she cut Professor Shen off mid-sentence. “Are you entirely certain those people were actually participating of their own free will?”

“That… Actually, at first, they genuinely were volunteers.” Professor Shen admitted, lowering his head. “However, as time went on and the gruesome nature of the trials spread, no one was willing to volunteer anymore. After that, Master Liang began sending test subjects to us directly. We did not ask questions at first, naively assuming they were simply willing participants Master Liang had personally recruited. It was only much later that we finally realised those people had actually been abducted by Master Liang’s operatives.”

“One of our senior researchers grew deeply disturbed and wanted to quit, intending to expose the entire operation to the authorities and the public. However, before she could leak a single piece of evidence, she was brutally murdered. Someone broke into her home, assaulted her, and took her life. Though the perpetrator was caught and sent to prison, his sentence was quietly reduced after his family successfully convinced the judge that he suffered from a severe mental illness.

The woman’s family refused to accept the verdict and fought tirelessly to appeal the court’s decision. They publicly claimed the entire incident was a targeted assassination, as she had dropped subtle hints about her dangerous research to them shortly before her death. Her family firmly believed her warnings. In the end, her entire family perished in a tragic car accident. I initially assumed it was just a terrible coincidence… until Master Liang brought it up himself. He callously stated that they could not afford to let anyone compromise the secrecy of their research.” Professor Shen explained grimly.

“So, what can you tell us about the tree?” Long Hui interjected, his eyes sharpening.

He was particularly concerned about the ancient entity, given its direct ties to his Miracle Space.

“I honestly don’t know much about its true origin. As far as I am aware, that tree was already present on the land long before we arrived.” Professor Shen replied.

“How could you possibly not know?” Yu Qi questioned, her tone laced with scepticism. “Didn’t you oversee the construction of this entire facility?”

“Master Liang was the one who personally selected this specific plot of land. Before this underground facility was constructed, an old residence stood above ground. He brought me to the site once before demolishing the house and showed me the subterranean cavern beneath it. I saw the massive tree standing there for the first time. He informed me that the tree was a concentrated power source that I would use to formulate the elixir. He was proven right. The tree was indeed an extraordinary specimen. Many of our most successful pharmaceutical products were created by harvesting parts of its body.” Professor Shen revealed.

“And what about the human experiments involving spiritual energy?” Long Hui pressed, his eyes narrowing dangerously.

“Well, that was our ultimate objective from the very beginning. Master Liang stated that he wanted to engineer superhuman individuals. He frequently referred to them as ‘cultivators.’ It was just like the figures described in ancient legends and fantasy novels. He wanted to elevate ordinary humans to that level. Master Liang himself was already a remarkably powerful being who had lived for generations without aging or suffering from illness. Our wealthy investors were utterly fascinated by his longevity and were more than willing to pour astronomical sums of money into funding the research.” Professor Shen answered.

“What is hidden behind the second door inside the chamber where the tree was kept?” Yu Qi asked.

“I am truly not sure. That room serves as Master Liang’s private quarters whenever he visits the facility. I don’t even possess the security key to access it.” Professor Shen stated helplessly.

“It seems we will need to pay that room a personal visit.” Yu Qi smirked, a playful yet dangerous glint flashing in her eyes.
