Rebirth: The Courtyard Bride Is Cool and Radiant

Chapter 238: Chapter 238: On behalf of the whole squadron, I thank you

She had also hurried over, worried the Branch Secretary might soon be heading to the Pond. ”Uncle Branch Secretary, need a hand?”

The Branch Secretary was packing up some things. ”Chu Zhiqing, why have you come over so early?”

Yunyi walked in with a smile. ”Uncle Branch Secretary, there’s something I want to mention to you.”

The Branch Secretary gestured for her to sit. ”Go ahead.”

After Yunyi sat down, she said, ”The five hundred yuan in compensation from the Qiu siblings, I’d like to leave it to the village.”

Upon hearing her words, the Branch Secretary exclaimed, ”What? You want to give the money to the village?”

Yunyi nodded; she only wanted the money to punish the Qiu siblings. She wasn’t short of money and had no intention of keeping such funds for herself. ”Yes, but I’d like the money to be used for the village’s primary school.”

The Branch Secretary hadn’t expected Yunyi to do this. It would be a lie to say he wasn’t moved, especially since the primary school building was indeed very shabby. ”Chu Zhiqing, I don’t even know what to say... sigh. On behalf of all the brigade members, I thank you.”

Yunyi started to smile. ”During my time in the village, everyone has taken good care of me. Being able to do something for the village is a small way for me to give back.”

Besides, this money came from someone else, so I’m even happier to do this.

The Branch Secretary rubbed his hands together. ”Now the village children won’t have to worry about the building leaking during summer rains or being drafty in winter winds. Chu Zhiqing, I am truly grateful to you.”

Yunyi then thought of Xue Zhidong. ”Uncle Branch Secretary, also, could fifty yuan from this amount be allocated for Xue Zhidong’s junior and senior high school tuition for four years?”

Hearing Yunyi’s words and thinking of the boy’s hardships, the Branch Secretary nodded. ”Of course. With this money, that child won’t have to worry about dropping out anymore.”

With the matter settled, the two of them left the brigade office together and headed towards the Qingtang area.

Work had already started there, and a crowd of adults and children had gathered to watch the excitement.

The water in the Pond had been drained. Many men, wearing thigh-high rubber boots, had waded into the Pond, flinging fish after fish onto the bank. Some older boys also jumped in, prompting shouts from many women on the bank: ”You little rascal, get out of there this instant!”

But those boys, completely unbothered by how cold their feet were, were happily engrossed in catching fish.

With so many hands at work, the fish were quickly tossed onto the bank. Afterward, the Branch Secretary organized people to clean and weigh them, and Accountant Lu came over to handle the distribution.

The men in the Pond, anticipating the warm fish soup they would drink at noon, worked with a vigor as if they had taken stimulants, clearing the silt at an incredible speed.

While everyone else was watching the fish distribution, Yunyi wandered aimlessly around the Pond.

I’ll come over tonight to collect some pond silt for the Spatial Water. I’ll take it up the mountain to dry, then mix it with quicklime for disinfection and soil. After that, I can try planting some of those aquatic plants in the Spatial Water pond.

When she finished her stroll, she heard the Branch Secretary call out, ”Chu Zhiqing, come and get your fish.”

The Branch Secretary, in a good mood, picked out two larger fish and handed them to her. Just as he was about to say something, someone came running over, shouting, ”Branch Secretary, bad news! There’s a fight at the Zhiqing Point!”

The Branch Secretary had no time to say more to Yunyi. He thrust the fish into her hands and hurried towards the Zhiqing Point, muttering, ”This troublesome lot.”

Yunyi, carrying the fish, also followed, curious about what had happened. Why on earth would they be fighting?

When she arrived, the Zhiqing Point was surrounded by three layers of onlookers, both inside and out. Spotting Zhao Guihua in the crowd, Yunyi asked, ”Auntie, what happened? Why did they start fighting?”

Hearing Yunyi’s question, Zhao Guihua chuckled and pointed towards the oxcart. ”The brigade leader brought back three new educated youths. They clashed with the existing ones over accommodation. Daring to start a fight right after arriving—looks like there’ll be plenty of trouble from them in the future.”
