Rebirth: The Courtyard Bride Is Cool and Radiant

Chapter 216: Chapter 216: He really is a brown-noser

Back then, Auntie Jiang and Du Shujian’s father had their issues, which all the siblings more or less knew about.

That’s why they didn’t dare let out a whisper about their younger sister and the Du family boy’s situation, for fear of angering Auntie Jiang and causing unrest at home once again.

But this matter couldn’t be dragged on any longer. Du Shujian was a man; even if a few more years passed, he wouldn’t worry about finding a bride. However, if their younger sister delayed any longer, it wouldn’t be good for her.

At this moment, a noise came from the front door. ”We’re back.”

Huo Jiayuan composed herself. ”Second Brother, Second Sister-in-law, Third Brother, Third Sister-in-law.”

Second Brother Huo Qianjin, who was leading the way, was attentive. ”Little Sister, what’s wrong with your eyes?”

Huo Jiayuan rubbed her eyes. ”It’s nothing. I’ve been busy these days, and my eyes are a bit uncomfortable from rubbing them.”

Considering Huo Jiayuan’s job, they believed her. However, Second Brother Huo Qianjin still nagged, ”Don’t always try to be so strong in the future.”

Huo Jiayuan knew her second brother cared about her. ”Mm, I got it.”

Third Brother Huo Gaodi then lightly tapped his little sister’s head. ”You agree so readily, but how many times have you actually followed through?”

Huo Jiayuan covered the sore spot on her head and said to Duan Zhuangyu, who was walking in, ”Third Sister-in-law, please control my third brother.”

Duan Zhuangyu waved her hand. ”I can’t intervene in matters between you siblings.”

Gao Ruyi glanced at Duan Zhuangyu, who had already seated herself on the sofa, and thought, This sister-in-law is certainly something, always bickering with her own husband. Her younger sister-in-law even gave her an easy way out, but she’s still putting on such airs.

Huo Jiayuan hadn’t expected it. Ever since the day her third brother casually told his wife, ”Little Sister’s affairs are none of your concern,” her third sister-in-law had taken it to heart and wouldn’t let it go. After that, Huo Jiayuan’s attempts to chat with her were met with such indifference that it made her wonder if there was something wrong with her sister-in-law’s mind.

Indeed, the relationship between a husband’s sister and his wife was a tricky one to navigate.

Fortunately, her eldest sister-in-law was outspoken but straightforward, and her second sister-in-law was steady and considerate. It was only her third sister-in-law who was always nit-picking.

Huo Shanhe was preoccupied today. When he arrived home right on time, only his eldest daughter’s family had not yet arrived.

Huo Jiayuan ran over. ”Dad, happy birthday! I had someone bring back some seafood for you; make sure you eat plenty tonight.”

Huo Shanhe smiled at his younger daughter. ”My little girl is indeed thoughtful. Dad will certainly enjoy it.”

No sooner had he said this than a voice came from behind, ”What’s this? Your little girl is thoughtful, so does that mean your eldest isn’t?”

Huo Shanhe turned around to see his eldest daughter and her family walk in. ”You’re about to become a mother-in-law, yet you’re still playing these games with your old dad.”

Huo Weiyu feigned annoyance. ”Even if I’m seventy or eighty, I’ll still be your daughter, won’t I? And you’re already tired of me?”

Huo Shanhe laughed. ”I wouldn’t dare, I wouldn’t dare. How could I ever be tired of you?”

His granddaughter Lu Fengning, who followed them in, interjected, ”If Grandpa dared to be tired of you, Mom, then we’d all be in trouble! Besides, even if Grandpa felt that way, he wouldn’t dare say it out loud.”

Her remark made Jiang Jingya, who was coming downstairs, laugh out loud. ”My Fengning always hits the nail on the head.”

Huo Weiyu looked up at Jiang Jingya. ”Whose side are you on?”

Jiang Jingya walked down smiling. ”I’m on Fengning’s side.”

Lu Fengning ran towards Jiang Jingya. ”Grandma, did you miss Fengning?”

Jiang Jingya caught her and smiled. ”I missed you, I missed you! Auntie Zhang made lots of delicious food today, and she specially made your favorite braised pork ribs.”

Lu Fengning jumped up joyfully. ”Grandma is the best!”

Happiness was evident on Huo Shanhe’s face. He loved watching his grandchildren being close to Jiang Jingya.

Huo Weiyu, her own mother, remarked, ”Such a little flatterer.”

Lu Fengning paid no mind to her mom, still hugging Jiang Jingya tightly. ”Hmph, you’re just jealous! Grandma and I are the closest.”

Huo Shanhe walked inside, looking at his children with a smile. ”It’s been a long time since we’ve all gathered like this. Today is a joyous occasion. Later, bring out that good bottle of wine I’ve been saving; I want you all to have a drink with me.”

Gui Hongmei emerged from the kitchen then. ”Dad, dinner is ready. Shall we start eating now?”

Today was the old master’s sixtieth birthday. Initially, the siblings had planned to host a birthday banquet for him, but Huo Shanhe had politely declined.

Indeed, given the current special circumstances, they couldn’t afford to make any missteps.
