Tech Giants: Starting from Bankrupt Companies

129: Chapter 129 Three Major Breakthroughs in MaterialsDecember 12, 2017, 11:47 PM.

Dapeng Peninsula, Shenzhen. Xingchen Academy of Sciences, Institute of Materials, Top-Secret Laboratory, Basement Level 3.

This might be the quietest yet most tense place in China. There were no windows and no natural light; only the cold white glow cast by LED tubes and the low hum of operating instruments. The air was thick with a peculiar scent—a mixture of ozone, coolant, and human sweat.

Wu Yi stood before the central console, both hands braced against the surface, his knuckles turning white from the pressure. He had been working for seventy-two consecutive hours. His eyes were bloodshot, and the collar of his lab coat was stained dark with sweat, but his gaze remained as sharp as a scalpel.

Before him were three display screens, each showing the final test data for three new materials:

[Material A: Spark-1 High-Performance Engineering Plastic]

Test Item: Tensile Strength

Real-time Data: 245MPa... 246MPa... 247MPa...

Target Value: 240MPa (Benchmarked against Dupont Zytel HTN 2020 model)

Status: Testing

[Material B: Spark-2 Metal Matrix Composite]

Test Item: High-Temperature Creep Performance

Real-time Temperature: 650°C

Duration: 120 hours

Creep Strain: 0.032%

Target Value: < 0.05% (Benchmarked against US DWA 2021 model)

Status: Testing

[Material C: Spark-3 Glass Fiber Reinforced Composite]

Test Item: Impact Toughness

Impact Energy: 25J

Test Result: No delamination, no cracks

Target Value: Withstand 20J impact without damage (Benchmarked against Japan’s Toray T1100 grade carbon fiber)

Status: Test Completed

”Mr. Wu, Material C has passed all tests.” The voice of Chief Engineer Chen Jianhua came through the intercom. The fifty-year-old veteran engineer’s voice was hoarse, but he couldn’t suppress his excitement. ”A twenty-five joule impact, and there are only slight white marks on the surface. Toray’s best carbon fiber would delaminate at this energy level.”

Wu Yi didn’t respond immediately. His eyes were glued to the screens for Material A and Material B. The numbers were still jumping, like life lines on a heart monitor.

Memories from three months ago suddenly flooded his mind.

It was a late night in mid-September when Su Chen called him to the office and handed over an encrypted hard drive. ”Wu Yi, inside are the technical specifications for three new materials. Performance indicators... you’ll understand once you see them.”

He had returned to the lab and opened the files. At first glance, he thought he had misread them—those parameters were 20% to 30% higher than the most advanced materials in the world at the time. Even more bizarrely, the technical route completely subverted existing theories, as if someone had skipped fifty years of research and development to provide the ultimate answer directly.

”Where did these technologies come from?” he had asked Su Chen at the time.

Su Chen’s answer was simple: ”Don’t ask about the source; ask if you can make them. In three months, I want to see mass-produced samples.”

At that moment, Wu Yi knew he was participating in a plan that far exceeded the scope of business. He didn’t ask further, only nodding. ”I can do it.”

Then came ninety days of hell.

From technical drawings to actual materials, there were countless process gaps to bridge. Some additives in the formulas simply didn’t exist on the market; the temperature curves in the process parameters couldn’t be achieved with existing equipment; some testing methods even had to be invented by them.

The most difficult part was the metal matrix composite. They had to uniformly disperse ceramic nanoparticles into the aluminum alloy matrix while ensuring interface bonding strength. The traditional method used mechanical stirring, but the nanoparticles would clump. The team tried seventeen different solutions and failed every time until a young engineer suggested using the ultrasonic cavitation effect—something he had read in an obscure paper.

The author of that paper was a forgotten materials scientist from the Soviet Union era.

”Sometimes, technological breakthroughs aren’t about inventing new things, but rediscovering forgotten ones,” Chen Jianhua had remarked emotionally back then.

Now, only thirteen minutes remained of the three-month deadline.

”Mr. Wu, Material A testing is complete!” a shout came over the intercom. ”Tensile strength is 248.7MPa, exceeding the target value by 3.6%! All mechanical properties are in the green!”

Suppressed cheers broke out in the control room. Several young engineers high-fived each other but immediately held their breath again—there was still Material B.

On the screen, the high-temperature creep test entered its final countdown. In an environment of 650°C, the material had been under continuous stress for 120 hours. If the creep strain exceeded 0.05%, it would mean the material would deform and fail during long-term high-temperature service, making it unusable for critical components like aero-engine blades.

The numbers flickered: 0.033%... 0.033%... 0.034%...

Wu Yi’s palms were drenched in sweat. He recalled Su Chen’s words: ”These three materials are the cornerstones of China’s high-end manufacturing for the next five years. Engineering plastics for automotive lightweighting, metal matrix composites for aero-engines, glass fiber reinforced materials for wind turbine blades and pressure vessels... Without them, our industrial upgrading is just a castle in the air.”

Final ten seconds.

The entire control room was so quiet that one could hear their own heartbeat. Someone began to whisper the countdown: ”Ten, nine, eight...”

”Seven, six, five...”

Wu Yi closed his eyes. Images of the past three months flashed through his mind: sleepless nights in the lab, failures during production line debugging, reconciliations after team arguments, and Su Chen’s silent expectation every time he came to inspect...

”Four, three, two...”

”Test complete!” Chen Jianhua’s voice boomed. ”Final creep strain: 0.035%! Design target achieved!”

A moment of silence was followed by an explosion of cheers. Young engineers threw off their hard hats; some jumped so high they hit the ceiling, while others hugged and wept. Three months, ninety days, 2,160 hours—they had finally done it.

Wu Yi slowly released his grip on the console, realizing his hands were trembling. He picked up the intercom, his voice steady: ”Engineer Chen, notify the production workshop: start the first batch of mass production immediately. Also—”

He paused and took a deep breath. ”Hold a press conference tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 PM. Announce it to the world.”

December 13, 2:00 PM. Press conference hall of Spark Materials Headquarters.

The hall, which could hold five hundred people, was packed. In the front row were special guests: Minister Li from the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, President Wang from the Aerospace Group, leaders from the Automobile Industry Association, and procurement heads from over a dozen large state-owned enterprises. In the middle were domestic and foreign media reporters, with cameras already set up. In the back were industry experts and representatives from investment institutions.

The atmosphere was peculiar—not the relaxed anticipation of a typical press conference, but a heavy, scrutinizing vibe. Everyone knew that Spark was being globally blockaded, and they had all heard the news of Red Flag’s price cuts and the massive sales of consumer electronics. Now, what moves would be made in the field of materials?

At exactly 2:00 PM, the lights dimmed.

A spotlight hit the stage entrance. Wu Yi walked out, not wearing a suit, but a deep blue engineer’s uniform with the flame emblem of Spark Materials embroidered on the left chest. This detail made many eyes in the audience light up—not a businessman, but an engineer.

”Ladies and gentlemen, good afternoon.” Wu Yi began, his voice carrying clearly through the speakers across the hall. ”Today is not a product launch; it is a results report. I am here to report that Spark Materials Science has just crossed three important thresholds.”

No pleasantries, no thank-yous; he cut straight to the point.

The big screen lit up, displaying three terms:

High-Performance Engineering Plastics

Metal Matrix Composites

Glass Fiber Reinforced Composites

”First, Spark-1 High-Performance Engineering Plastic.” Wu Yi signaled the staff to wheel out a display rack. On the rack was just a small piece of black paneling, twenty centimeters square and about five millimeters thick, looking quite ordinary.

”The weight of this material is 180 grams.” Wu Yi picked up the panel with one hand. ”Now, I am going to do something with it.”

From the back of the stage, a Red Flag H9 slowly drove up. Staff used a crane to lift the front of the car, exposing the front bumper area. Wu Yi walked to the car and fixed the black panel to a test point under the bumper using a special clamp.

”This H9 has a curb weight of 1.5 tons.” Wu Yi stepped back a few paces. ”Now, we will remove the crane support and let the entire weight of the vehicle rest completely on this material.”

Low murmurs broke out in the audience. Using a piece of plastic to support 1.5 tons? It sounded like a magic trick.

The crane slowly withdrew. The front of the Red Flag H9 began to sink—and then stopped. That tiny piece of black paneling truly held up the entire weight of the vehicle.

”But that’s not enough,” Wu Yi said. Staff brought out a high-temperature blowtorch. A blue flame shot out, showing a temperature of 1200°C. The flame was blasted directly onto the black panel.

Ten seconds, twenty seconds, thirty seconds... The surface of the panel began to glow slightly red, but it didn’t melt, didn’t burn, and didn’t even show any obvious deformation.

After one minute, the blowtorch was turned off. Staff measured it with an infrared thermometer: the surface temperature of the panel was 980°C, but the temperature on the back was only 120°C.

”Extremely low thermal conductivity and excellent high-temperature resistance.” Wu Yi walked to the panel and touched it directly—he was wearing heat-resistant gloves. ”Design indicator: long-term use temperature of 260°C, short-term resistance to 1200°C impact. Actual test results: 280°C long-term, 1300°C short-term.”

Applause began to ripple through the audience, but it wasn’t enthusiastic yet. Everyone was waiting for a more shocking demonstration.

”The second one, Spark-2 Metal Matrix Composite.” Wu Yi pulled up a video. ”For confidentiality reasons, we cannot show the physical sample. However, this declassified test video can illustrate some points.”

The video began to play. It was a laboratory setting where a silver-gray metal component was fixed to a testing machine. First was a static test: 500MPa, 1000MPa, 1500MPa... The component began to deform, but it did not break.

”Tensile strength is 1800MPa, three times that of ordinary aviation aluminum alloy,” Wu Yi explained.

Then came the fatigue test: the component vibrated under alternating stress, and the cycle counter jumped rapidly: 100,000, 500,000, 1,000,000... When the number reached 2,000,000, the video paused.

”This is the fatigue life standard required for aero-engine blades,” Wu Yi said. ”We achieved it.”

Finally, the high-temperature test: the component was heated to 700°C, and then mechanical testing was conducted at that high temperature. The video showed that even under such extreme conditions, the material still maintained 80% of its room-temperature strength.

The video ended. The audience was quiet for a few seconds, and then Minister Li from the Defense Science and Industry Bureau was the first to applaud. The serious-faced soldier clapped slowly but with great force. Immediately after, President Wang of the Aerospace Group also stood up and applauded.

They understood what these numbers meant—lighter, stronger, and more heat-resistant materials meant planes could fly further, faster, and more efficiently; it meant the thrust-to-weight ratio of engines could reach another level; it meant the time for China’s aviation industry to catch up with the world’s top level could be shortened by five or even ten years.
