Re-Awakening: I Ascend with a Legendary class

Chapter 817: The True Question

Nobody on the thrones spoke.

The gatekeeper’s great golden eye stayed on them. Its voice had filled the whole heart, and now the quiet after it felt just as large.

Almond was still on the ground with Lily’s arms around him. He pushed himself up until he was sitting. It hurt a great deal.

”Ask it,” he said.

The gatekeeper was quiet for a moment longer.

”The thing that sat in me asked whether you were worth letting further,” it said. ”That was never my question. I do not weigh worth. I have watched this layer since before the first kingdom climbed up from the bottom world, and I have never once found a way to weigh it.”

”Then what do you ask?” Rudra said.

”Only this,” the gatekeeper said. ”My door opens one way. What you carry through it, you keep. What you leave on this side, you leave.”

The great eye moved slowly over each of them.

”So tell me what you will carry.”

Rudra answered first, because he never liked to wait.

”My crew,” he said. ”Every one of them. I’ve never left a deck with people still on it, and I’m not starting now.”

The gatekeeper said nothing. Its eye moved on.

”My kitchen,” Ainen said. He was still standing on the slack thread, one hand pressed to his bleeding shoulder. ”My wives. And a seat at the table for anyone who shows up hungry. That last part isn’t up for discussion.”

Something moved in the gatekeeper’s eye. It might have been warmth.

”I know, host,” it said.

Maya answered quietly. ”The people I came up with. We were nine once, with nothing. I’d carry all nine.”

Kael was slow to speak. He was looking at the dark where the tunnels had been.

”I came down here with eleven others,” he said. ”Seven of them are still in your body somewhere. I’d carry them home, if there’s anything left to carry.”

The gatekeeper’s eye closed for a moment.

”There is,” it said. ”The thing in me took them. I kept them. You will have all seven.”

Kael’s jaw worked. He nodded once and did not trust himself to say more.

The eye turned to Lily.

”Him,” Lily said simply, and tightened her arm around Almond. ”And someone we haven’t met yet.”

Almond looked at her. She did not look away.

Then the eye came to rest on him.

Almond thought about it for longer than the others had.

He thought about a bottom world full of chains. He thought about four hundred people on a ship, and then four thousand, and then more than he could count. He thought about every awakened construct who had opened its eyes one morning and asked him who it was.

”Everyone,” he said.

”That is a large word,” the gatekeeper said.

”I know. I mean it anyway.” Almond took a slow, careful breath. ”Everyone who took our name. Everyone who’s standing on that Shelf right now. The ones who came out of our decks and woke up. The ones who were slaves with us at the bottom. I don’t go through any door that they can’t go through.”

”And if my door were too small for all of them?”

”Then I’d stay on this side,” Almond said, ”and build a bigger door.”

The heart was very quiet.

Then the gatekeeper made a sound none of them had heard before. It was low and deep and it rolled through the walls of the heart like thunder from far away.

It took Almond a moment to understand that it was laughing.

”Thirty-seven years ago,” it said, ”a small gray thing fell into me and told me that nothing which climbed this far would ever give that answer. It was very sure.”

The great golden hand opened. The gray ash it had been holding was gone.

”It was wrong,” the gatekeeper said. ”Come. I will take you up.”

The heart opened above them.

It did not tear. It unfolded, layer after layer, like a hand opening one finger at a time. A straight road of soft gold light ran upward through the whole body, forty miles to the shell of the world.

The thrones rose along it.

The eight Spirit Lords did not have to carry anything this time. The light carried them. Sylvia’s shoulder closed over as they rose, and Benedict stopped limping, and Nyssara let out a long breath.

[Sylvia: Master. It is healing us.]

[Alfred: I do not think I have ever been carried before. It is strange.]

[Benedict: I could get used to it.]

Vess was waiting at the door of the heart, with Rudra’s marines still dug into its edges around her. She was bleeding from a cut on her forehead, and she had clearly been ready to die there.

She looked at the gold light. She looked at Kael.

”I assume we won,” she said.

”We won,” Kael said.

Vess sat down on the edge of the thrones and put her face in her hands. Nobody said anything about it.

A little farther up, the light widened. Seven shapes lay in it, side by side, whole and still, as if they were only sleeping. Kael knelt beside each one in turn and said each name out loud.

Rudra stood behind him the whole time with his head bowed.

On the Sundered Shelf, nobody had moved in an hour.

The soldiers were gone. The mouths had closed. The whole line stood in the gray morning light with weapons still in their hands, because nobody could quite believe it.

Marcus was still in the command tent. His voice had gone to a croak a long time ago.

”Almond,” he said into the headset. ”The Shelf is quiet. We don’t know what that means. If you can hear me, we’re still here.”

The headset crackled.

Marcus stopped breathing.

”Marcus,” Almond’s voice said. It was rough and tired and very far away. ”You can stop talking now.”

Marcus made a sound that was half a laugh and half something else. Natalia grabbed his shoulder so hard it hurt.

”You heard me?” he said. ”The whole time?”

”Not a word of it,” Almond said. ”Lily says you’d have kept going anyway.”

”I did,” Marcus said. His eyes were streaming. ”I did keep going.”

”I know. We’re coming up. All of us.”

Marcus tore off the headset and ran out of the tent.

”They’re alive!” he shouted. His voice cracked across the whole Shelf. ”All five of them! They’re coming up!”

The canyon filled with gold light.

It came up out of the dark like a sunrise from the wrong direction. The whole Shelf turned to watch. The thrones rose out of it, eight Spirit Lords standing in a circle, and inside the circle were the people who had gone down.

Silvester saw them first. He was on a stretcher with Hiroshi sitting beside him.

”Told you,” he said.

”You told me nothing,” Hiroshi said. ”You were unconscious.”

”I told you in my heart.”

Fraisea, Saffa, and Clovelle reached Ainen before the thrones had even stopped moving. Saffa saw the hole in his shoulder and hit him in the arm. Then she held on to him and would not let go.

Kayla got to Almond and Lily and said nothing at all. She just put both hands on Almond’s ribs and started working.

John walked up slowly, his hands in his pockets. He looked at Almond for a long moment.

”I told Big D you were alive,” he said.

”Were you sure?”

”No,” John said. ”But I said it like I was.”

Big D came last.

He stopped in front of the five of them. He looked at each one for a moment, as if he was counting. Then he let out a long, slow breath through his nose.

”That’s everyone who went down,” he said. ”Good.”

”What did we lose up here?” Almond asked quietly.

Big D did not soften it. He never did.

”Too many,” he said. ”I have every name. You’ll hear them tonight, all of them, and so will everyone else.”

Almond nodded. ”Tonight.”

Big D looked past him, at Kael Vantress standing among seven still shapes wrapped in gold light.

”Theirs too,” Big D said. ”If Skytheum will let us.”

Kael looked up. For a moment he seemed too tired to answer.

”Skytheum would be honored,” he said.

The Hub lit up over the Shelf a moment later. It lit up over every kingdom on the layer at the same time.

[World-Ending Event Complete: The Ascension Convergence]

[The layer will not be reset.]

A sound went up from the whole Shelf. It was not quite a cheer. It was the sound of thousands of people letting go of a breath they had held for four days.

[Ten highest contributions recorded.]

[1st: Ananta Regalon Kingdom]

[2nd: Skytheum Empire]

The list went on. John read down it with his head tilted. He found PeakWicked in fourth place and Frosthold in tenth, and his grin spread slowly from one ear to the other.

”Oh, Corvin is going to hate this,” he said happily.

[Reward: All members of the ten listed Kingdoms and Empires are elevated to Tier-100 lifeform.]

It hit all of them at once.

It did not feel like the other times. Every tier before it had felt like more. More strength, more reach, more of what they already had.

This felt like a ceiling coming off.

Almond stood very still and felt it settle into him. Beside him, Lily’s eyes had gone wide. Rudra was staring at his own hands. Ainen laughed out loud, once, like a man who had just been told a very good joke.

Big D stood in the middle of all of it with his arms crossed.

”Well,” he said. His voice was rough. ”That’s the top.”

”How does it feel?” Natalia asked him.

Big D was quiet for a moment.

”I don’t know yet,” he said. ”It’s my first time too. Ask me tomorrow.”

The gatekeeper spoke one last time.

Its voice came up through the ground itself, gentle and enormous. Every soul on the layer heard it.

”My door is open,” it said. ”It will stay open. Go through when you are ready, and not before. I will not hurry you.”

At the far end of the canyon, the gold light gathered itself into a shape.

It was a door. It was taller than a mountain, and it stood open just a little. Light came through the gap, and it was not gold. It was a color nobody on the Shelf had a name for.

Nobody could see what was on the other side.

For thirty-seven years, every kingdom on the layer had wondered what lay past the ceiling. Now the answer was standing open at the end of a canyon, and not one person moved toward it.

Not yet.

Almond stood and looked at it for a long time. Kayla had finished with his ribs. Lily was beside him, her shoulder against his.

”We said after,” she said quietly.

”We did.”

Lily slid her hand into his.

”Almond,” she said. ”It’s after.”
