Re-Awakening: I Ascend with a Legendary class

Chapter 810: Beneath The Shelf

Big D read the names himself.

All two hundred and eleven of them, standing at the edge of the eastern camp in the dark, while the canyon behind him glowed faintly with whatever was breathing at the bottom of it. He did not rush a single one. He did not skip one to save time, and he did not read them off a list, because somewhere in the last three hours he had memorized every name on it.

When he finished, nobody moved for a while.

”They held,” he said finally. ”Every one of them held the line they were given. That’s what I want remembered. Not how they died. That they held.”

Then he went back to work, because there was nothing else to do with grief that big except carry it.

---

The Six confirmed Maya’s finding before midnight.

It came as a joint posting again, the second in two days, and it read like something written by people who had spent the last several hours trying very hard not to panic.

[Confirmed across all six primary convergence points: the hostile origin is a single organism.]

[It occupies the full interior of this world. The surface is not ground. It is a shell.]

[The soldiers climbing from the fissures are grown from its body. They are not an army. They are an immune response.]

[We are standing on it.]

Ainen read the last line three times.

”We’re the infection,” he said slowly. ”That’s what we are to it. Four hundred thousand of us on the Shelf alone, and a whole layer’s worth everywhere else, standing on its skin.”

”And it’s trying to get rid of us,” Lily said.

”And it’s very, very good at getting rid of things,” Rudra said. ”It’s had this whole world to practice on.”

---

Day two began with the world moving.

Not cracking. Moving. The entire Sundered Shelf lifted by about six feet in one long, slow motion, held there, and then settled again, and every single person standing on it understood in their stomach what they had just felt.

The thing underneath them had breathed.

”Everyone flat,” Rudra called across the link. ”If it does that faster, anything standing goes over.”

It did not do it faster. It did something worse.

The canyon between the two halves of the Shelf opened another hundred feet in the space of a minute, and what came up out of it this time were not nine-foot soldiers. They were forty feet tall, built on the same grown-armor pattern, and there were sixty of them.

”It learned,” Maya said. ”Yesterday’s soldiers died too easily. So it grew bigger ones.”

”Then we’re fighting an immune system that adapts overnight,” Julian said.

”Yes.”

”I hate that.”

”Everyone hates that,” Marcus said. ”Positions.”

The first ten minutes were bad.

A forty-foot soldier with grown armor did not stagger when Jian hit it with Skyfather’s Judgment. It absorbed the lightning, visibly, the current running into its plating and simply vanishing. Julian’s Wildfire Eternal found no purchase either. The armor was alive, and living things on this world had apparently been built by something that had spent a very long time learning how not to burn.

”Nothing’s landing,” Natalia called, three shots from Warsong Absolute glancing off a single plate. ”What’s it weak to?”

”Nothing we’ve found yet,” Ainen called back, Palate of Truths running hard. ”It’s reading as one grown piece. No seams, no gaps, no joints. It’s like fighting a very large, very angry tree.”

”Trees get old,” Almond said.

Ainen went very still for about half a second.

”Oh,” he said. ”Yes. Yes, they do.”

---

Ainen took the first of the giants himself, because he had something he’d been waiting thirty-seven years to test on a target this size.

**Vintage Eternal** had been Cellar Aged once. It had compressed a year of development into an hour on four stone slabs, so a stew could mature in the time it took to fight a battle.

The rebuilt version did not work on stew.

Ainen put his palm flat against the giant’s grown armor as it came down on him, and the armor aged. A century passed across that single plate in the space of a heartbeat, then a second century, then a third, and grown armor that had been living and flexible and impossible to cut went grey and dry and brittle as old bone.

It cracked under its own weight.

”Grown armor,” Ainen said, stepping back as the giant’s whole left side came apart. ”Grown means alive. Alive means it gets old.”

Ironpot Colossus finished it, sixty feet of black iron closing a fist around forty feet of suddenly ancient enemy, and the giant crumbled like dry clay.

”How many of those can you do?” Rudra asked.

”Honestly? Not sixty.”

”How many?”

”Nine. Maybe eleven if nobody asks me to cook tonight.”

”Nobody will ask you to cook tonight.”

”Somebody always asks me to cook tonight.”

---

The giants broke the eastern line at the fourth hour.

It happened fast. Three of them came up the shallow face together, and the section they hit was held by a unit that had lost a third of its people the day before. The line bent, then gave, and within ninety seconds forty Regalons were down and the giants were onto the plateau.

Lily reached them first.

She did not fight the giants. She had spent the whole of the last night thinking about what had cost them two hundred and eleven people, and it was not the enemy’s strength. It was the time it took to get the wounded off the line.

**Mercyshade Sovereign** had been the Dread Sovereign once, a single healer-support construct that stood at her shoulder and patched her through a fight.

What rose now covered a quarter mile.

It was not a construct so much as a canopy, pale and translucent and soft at every edge, spreading out over the collapsed section of the line like cloud moving across a sky. Everything beneath it that was still alive stopped dying. Not healed, not yet. Held. Every bleeding wound stopped bleeding. Every failing heart held its last beat and did not lose it.

”Get them out,” Lily said, and her voice was already thin with what it was costing her. ”I can’t heal forty people and hold a giant off them at the same time. I can keep them alive. That’s all I can do. Get them out.”

Kayla’s Edenroot arrived under the canopy eleven seconds later. The combined weight of both of them working the same ground was the single greatest act of healing anyone on the Shelf had ever seen.

Every one of the forty lived.

---

Rudra dealt with the three giants, and he dealt with them using the last of his original decks he had never shown anyone.

Boarding Party had been spectral marines once, swarming an enemy deck the way a crew swarmed a ship.

**Hullbreaker Vanguard** did the same thing, except the ship was the enemy.

Three hundred armored spectral marines came up out of the air around the nearest giant and simply climbed it. Not attacking from outside. Boarding. Cutting their way in through the seams Ainen’s reading had marked, going inside the thing’s grown armor where nothing protected the flesh underneath.

The giant stopped moving from the inside out.

”That’s the whole deck?” Marcus asked, watching it happen.

”That’s the whole deck,” Rudra said. ”I spent thirty-seven years thinking about how to board something that isn’t a ship. Turns out the answer is the same. Find the hull, find the seam, go in.”

The other two giants went down the same way within the hour.

---

It was Rudra’s deck that gave Almond the idea, and he said it out loud that evening in a way that made the whole command circle go quiet.

”We keep fighting what comes up,” he said. ”Every day it sends something bigger, and every day we kill it, and every day it learns. That’s a war we lose eventually, even if it takes a month.”

”So what’s the alternative?” Natalia asked.

”Rudra boarded a giant. We board the body.”

The silence went on long enough that Ainen finally broke it.

”You want to go *down*,” he said. ”Into the thing that’s under the entire world.”

”Maya found the bottom of the canyon. The canyon is a wound. Wounds go somewhere.” Almond looked around at all of them. ”Something down there is deciding what to grow next. If we can reach it, we stop fighting its immune system and start fighting it.”

”And if we can’t reach it?”

”Then we’re very deep underground inside something that wants us dead,” Almond admitted. ”I’m not going to pretend otherwise.”

---

They argued about it for two hours, which was the longest argument the family had had in decades.

In the end, it was Big D who settled it, the way he always had.

”The Six are fighting the same war everywhere else,” he said. ”Same immune response, same adapting, same losing slowly. If anybody on this layer is going to try the other thing, it’s going to be the kingdom that’s spent thirty-seven years doing things nobody else would try.”

He looked at Almond.

”Small team. Your best. Everyone else holds the Shelf.”

”I’ll bring the Choir,” Almond said.

Lily looked over sharply, because she was the only one in the circle who knew what he’d spent the last decade quietly rebuilding it into, and she had never once seen him willing to use it.

”You’re sure,” she said.

”No,” Almond said. ”But it’s the only deck I have that was built for somewhere I’ve never been.”

The canyon glowed beneath them.

They went down at dawn.
