Re-Awakening: I Ascend with a Legendary class

Chapter 804: The Long Middle

Day three was attrition, and attrition was worse than danger.

Nothing dramatic happened. That was the problem. The seven gates vented at a steady rate for twenty-six straight hours, never enough to break a position, never little enough to let anyone rest properly, and by the end of it the Gutwrack Span had settled into a rhythm that was slowly grinding four hundred people down.

Ainen’s kitchen never stopped. He’d slept four hours across two days, in pieces, usually sitting.

”You’re going to fall over,” Kayla told him at the fiftieth hour.

”Then I’ll cook lying down,” Ainen said. ”It’s been done.”

”By who?”

”Me. Twice. Different circumstances.”

She left him a bowl of his own food, which he ate without noticing, and went back to the wounded.

The rotation held because Rudra built it to hold.

Six hours on, six hours off, and the off hours were mandatory. He’d enforced it twice already, both times on people who’d tried to volunteer through their own rest, and both times the argument had lasted about four seconds.

”You are not more useful tired,” he told Hiroshi, the second time. ”You are slower, and slower gets someone else killed covering for you. Sleep.”

Hiroshi slept.

By the fifty-fifth hour, the sector had found something close to sustainable, and that alone put them ahead of most of the layer. Marcus watched three separate sectors drop off the performance board entirely during day three, kingdoms who’d burned everything in the first day and had nothing left for the fourth.

”We’re still second,” he reported.

”We’re still second because we’re boring,” Rudra said. ”Stay boring.”

The third emergency task posted at the sixtieth hour, and this one, Almond answered before anyone finished reading it.

[Emergency Task: Sector 11, the Calloway Steps.]

[Kingdom Ondrast holding, but overwhelmed. Two breach points at risk. Evacuation not required.]

[Estimated duration: four hours. Hostile presence: high but stable.]

”Four hours, stable, no evacuation,” Marcus read. ”That’s a task we can actually do.”

”Then we do it,” Almond said. ”How many?”

”Five’s comfortable. Six is better.”

”Send six.”

Nobody mentioned Sector 9. Nobody had to. The speed of the decision said everything there was to say about it.

Natalia took the team. Noah, Kira, Julian, Emma, and Marcus went with her, and they were gone before the hour finished.

The Calloway Steps turned out to be exactly what the posting said, which was its own kind of relief.

Ondrast’s line was intact. Their people were tired but standing, their commander was competent, and what they needed was not rescue but relief, six fresh bodies to hold two breach points while an exhausted kingdom got four hours of sleep.

”You’re the ones who pulled Veruhn out,” the Ondrast commander said.

”Word travels,” Natalia said.

”Word travels very fast when eleven kingdoms decline something and one kingdom shows up anyway.” He gestured at the two gates. ”Those are yours for four hours. Wake me if anything changes.”

He slept. So did most of his kingdom.

The four hours were straightforward, which felt almost strange after everything else. Emma and Julian took the eastern gate together and settled into the same fire-and-light rhythm they’d been running since the Thunderdome. Noah and Kira took the western one. Natalia and Marcus worked the middle, marking and covering.

At the third hour, something large came through the eastern gate, and Julian’s Wildfire Eternal held it in place long enough for Emma’s Dawnbreaker to put a hole through it.

”That’s the easiest thing I’ve done all event,” Emma said.

”Don’t say that out loud,” Julian said.

Nothing happened. It stayed easy. They handed the gates back to a rested Ondrast four hours later and went home.

[Emergency Task Complete: Calloway Steps relief.]

[Contribution awarded: Ananta Regalon.]

”Second place, holding,” Marcus reported on the way back. ”And Ondrast owes us now too.”

”That’s two kingdoms,” Natalia said.

”That’s two kingdoms who’ll remember,” Marcus said. ”Which matters more than the contribution points, whatever the board says.”

The entity came back at the seventy-first hour, on day four, and it did not come back wearing the same shape.

Maya felt it before anyone saw it, the same way she’d felt the Devourer, the same way she’d felt the grey figure.

”It’s here,” she said. ”It’s different.”

”Different how?”

”It’s not walking this time.”

It came up out of the ground beneath the northern gate, and what rose was not person-sized at all. It had built itself out of the sector, stone and root and the accumulated dead of three days of fighting, a body forty feet tall assembled from everything the Gutwrack Span had been feeding it.

The seam was still there, running down the center of its face. That was how they knew.

”It learned,” Almond said. ”Last time it barely existed and we punished it for that. So this time it made sure it’s here.”

”That’s the trade,” Rudra said. ”It’s here enough to hit. Which means it’s here enough to be hit.”

”That’s the optimistic reading.”

”It’s the only reading that ends with us winning.”

The fight was nothing like the last one.

The grey figure had been untouchable and fragile. This thing was neither. It waded into the northern position and took everything the family threw at it, and it kept coming, because a body built out of a battlefield could simply rebuild itself from more battlefield.

Jian hit it with Skyfather’s Judgment hard enough to take an arm off. The arm reassembled from rubble in eleven seconds.

Julian burned the reassembled arm with Wildfire Eternal, and the fire did real damage, but the thing simply shed the burning section and grew a new one out of a dead flood-creature it scooped off the ground without breaking stride.

”It’s eating the battlefield,” Maya called. ”Every corpse out here is spare parts for it. We’ve spent three days stocking its larder.”

Ainen’s head came up at that, and something in his expression went very flat.

”That’s my fault,” he said.

”It’s nobody’s fault,” Rudra said.

”I’ve had harvest crews leaving remains scattered across seven positions for two days. It’s been walking through a supply depot I built.” Ainen was already moving. ”Feast Golem, clear the northern field. Everything that isn’t standing, I want it gone.”

The Golem went to work behind the fight, dismantling corpses faster than the construct could reach them.

It helped. It was not enough.

Noah hit a leg joint with Endless Blade and opened it wide. Kira froze the gap so it couldn’t close. The construct simply put its weight on the other leg and kept advancing, and when Rudra called in the debt it had built crossing the position, the collected weight staggered it for perhaps two full seconds.

Two seconds was the best result anyone had gotten.

”We can’t out-damage it,” Noah called.

”We’re not going to,” Almond said. ”Lily?”

Lily had been waiting for exactly that question, and she’d spent two days thinking about the answer.

”It’s using the same name,” she said. ”Same self, different body. Which means if I could hold it once, I can hold it again.”

”Can you?”

”Not the way I did last time.” Lily’s hands were already moving. ”Last time I grabbed it and held on. It nearly killed me and I only lasted eleven seconds.”

”Then what?”

”This time I don’t hold it,” Lily said. ”I sever it from the body.”

Oathbreak Wraith had always been about the gap between a thing and its own identity.

Lily reached into the forty-foot construct and asked it, simply, whether it was the body or the name.

The body had no answer, because the body was rubble.

The name had an answer, and the answer was somewhere else entirely.

The connection between them was thin. That was the whole discovery. Whatever this thing was, it wasn’t inhabiting the body the way a person inhabits a body. It was operating it from a distance, the way a hand operates a tool.

”There,” Lily breathed. ”It’s not in there. It’s just holding the handle.”

”Cut the handle,” Almond said.

She cut the handle.

Forty feet of stone and root and dead monster went from a coordinated enemy to a pile of debris in the space of a single second, collapsing under its own weight with nothing left to tell it how to stand.

The seam in its face went dark before the rest of it hit the ground.

Nobody celebrated. They’d learned by now.

”Still not dead,” Marcus confirmed, reading whatever instruments the sector link gave him. ”Same as last time. It disengaged.”

”It’ll come back with a third shape,” Kira said.

”It will,” Almond agreed. ”And each time it comes back, it’ll have learned something from the last one.”

”So what do we do?”

Almond looked at the collapsed pile that had been a forty-foot enemy ninety seconds earlier.

”We learn faster,” he said.

The event board updated at the seventy-third hour.

[Sector Performance Evaluation: The Gutwrack Span.]

[Ranking among all active sectors: 1st.]

Marcus read it, then read it again, then put it on the sector link without comment because he didn’t trust himself to say it out loud properly.

First. Out of every sector in the year-end event. Ahead of kingdoms in the top twenty. Ahead of sectors held by forces that had been doing this for decades.

”Don’t,” Rudra said, before anyone could react. ”Sixty more hours. Same as before. Boring wins this.”

”You’re incapable of enjoying anything,” Ainen said from the kitchen.

”I’ll enjoy it on day seven.”

”You say that every time.”

”And I’m right every time,” Rudra said.

Above them, the sky stayed sick orange, and the gates kept venting, and four hundred Regalons went back to work with two and a half days still left to hold.
