Strongest Incubus System

Eighteen seconds might have seemed short to anyone watching from the outside, but they were enough for Damon to separate every force trying to pass through him. Vorn’s mark advanced along his left arm, cold and artificial, searching for the memory. Seraphine’s circle pressed against his meridians, trying to force the root to respond. The false mechanism vibrated beneath his feet, creating the illusion that the Heart was inside that chamber. Far below the mountains, the true Heart remained distant and silent, as though waiting to discover what choice he would make.

Seraphine kept her hand over the silver circle. The agents behind her formed a defensive line, but none of them attacked. That confirmed Damon’s suspicion. Seraphine needed him conscious, whole, and convinced that he stood before the Heart. The entire structure depended on his participation, even if she intended to call it destiny.

”Do not resist,” Seraphine said. ”The more you try to keep the root separate, the greater the rupture will be when the third door opens.”

The lines reached the base of his neck. Ester remained hidden behind the wall, waiting for the agreed signal.

Not yet.

Damon needed Seraphine to reveal how the circle worked and what she expected to obtain when the mark reached the memory.

”You spent years waiting for this moment,” Damon said. ”You look nervous.”

Seraphine smiled, but pressed harder against the center of the circle.

”I spent years eliminating mistakes. You are the first confirmation.”

”Vorn considered himself a confirmation too.”

The physician raised his face. He stood in chains between two guards, his hands trapped inside stone gloves. Seraphine looked at him without showing surprise, concern, or anger. She merely assessed his condition for one second before returning her attention to Damon.

Vorn noticed.

Damon saw understanding appear on his face. Seraphine had no intention of rescuing him. Like Elias, Iris, Mael, and the others, Vorn had stopped mattering the instant he failed.

The physician was now discovering that he occupied the same position.

”Did you bring the Valcair core?” Damon asked.

Seraphine did not answer.

”Ancient silver, bone, fragments of bells, and symbols copied from the fortress. It is not merely a key. It is an incomplete root.”

Her expression changed for a fraction of a second.

Damon was right.

The circle imitated a small elemental root, constructed from fragments gathered over generations. Seraphine intended to use it as a mold. When the third door opened, the original core of the fortress would be forced to recognize the circle as a vessel.

”You want to transplant the power before reaching the Tomb,” Damon concluded. ”You do not intend merely to command the Heart. You want to become its first bearer.”

Seraphine increased the pressure.

Pain crossed Damon’s arm and reached the back of his neck. Snow covered half his vision. The fortress gate appeared over the chamber wall, and the guardian in white armor raised its sword.

This time, it pointed directly toward the circle in Seraphine’s hands.

That was the test of the third door.

It was not only necessary to refuse control over the root inside him. He needed to prevent another person from turning the cold into property through his choice.

Seraphine saw his gaze change.

”You can see the gate.”

”Yes.”

”The guardian recognized you.”

”It recognized what you brought.”

She began reciting words in an ancient language. The bell fragments vibrated, and the lines crossed Damon’s shoulder.

Fifteen seconds.

He partially opened the meridian in his arm.

Ester moved behind the wall, but did not cut the connection. Damon had warned her that he would allow a controlled rise. The artificial energy entered through the mark and found the path toward the memory. Instead of blocking it, he guided it into the empty space between the memory and the root, where the Heavenly Ice Body kept the two separated.

Ice spread across the floor.

Seraphine smiled.

”Finally.”

Damon allowed one knee to give way, just enough to appear dominated. The blue lines reached his jaw, and the vision of the fortress covered the entire chamber. To Seraphine, the third door was opening. To him, the two realities remained superimposed but distinct.

The guardian struck its sword against the ground.

A sentence appeared over the gate.

The third door opens for the one who returns the cold to the world.

Damon understood it as an explanation. The root had never been something to possess, not for him, not for Seraphine, and not for Xue Lian. Controlling without belonging to the cold did not mean dominating it.

It meant allowing it to exist without turning it into an extension of one’s own will.

Seraphine would not understand.

Her entire life had been built around possession. Lands, debts, agents, illnesses, names, and needs became tools whenever they entered Valcair’s reach.

Damon raised his face.

”You are too late.”

Seraphine frowned.

”What?”

”The third door has already opened.”

Her smile disappeared.

Damon closed the meridian in his chest and opened every external path of the Heavenly Ice Body. The energy accumulated by the mark did not enter the root. It was returned to Seraphine’s circle, following the copied symbols she believed she controlled.

The structure trembled. Bone and silver froze from the inside out. Seraphine tried to pull her hand away, but the cold trapped her fingers against the center.

The agents advanced.

Ingrivid leaped from the upper passage and struck the first one with the flat of her sword. The knights closed the flanks while Elizabeth expanded the barrier and isolated the chamber.

Twelve seconds.

The circle tried to pull Damon’s root as a defensive response. The pressure in his chest nearly broke the separation. For an instant, the true Heart beat far away, recognizing the opening.

The chamber trembled.

Ester emerged from behind the wall.

”Now.”

Damon did not argue.

She pressed the three cutting points, beginning with the shoulder, then the base of the neck, and finally the wrist. Pain crossed his arm like a blade, but the mark lost contact with the memory. The lines retreated from his face.

Damon maintained only the external connection to the circle.

Seraphine realized too late that he was not being used as a bridge.

He was using her structure as an exit.

”Stop!” she ordered.

Damon closed his hand.

The cold crossed the circle and reached the fragments of artificial root. Every piece carried energy stolen from weakened territories, dried mines, and patients treated by Vorn.

Damon absorbed none of it.

He opened the symbols and returned the energy to the environment.

A wave crossed the chamber, entered the stone, spread through the tunnels, and followed the mountain’s natural currents. The ground trembled, but not like it had during the forced heartbeats. It was a broad release without a human center, distributed throughout the entire structure.

The circle cracked.

Seraphine screamed when the frozen metal broke around her hand. Caeris tried to reach her, but Morgana entered the chamber and blocked his sword. The captain pushed her back two steps, but Ingrivid appeared from the side and struck his knee.

Caeris fell, and Morgana placed her blade against his throat.

Two agents continued fighting. Elizabeth hurled one against the wall with an invisible pressure, and the knights subdued the second. The others dropped their weapons when Mael, Halder, and Vorn were exposed before the Council witnesses.

Seraphine continued staring at Damon. Her hand was injured and trapped among the remains of the circle, but the pain seemed secondary.

What truly destroyed her was watching the energy escape without accepting a new vessel.

”You wasted it,” she said.

Damon breathed with difficulty. Ester kept two fingers against his wrist, ready to close everything.

”It was not yours.”

”Power without an owner rots.”

”Then let it rot.”

Seraphine tried to pull a hidden fragment from her sleeve. Damon noticed the change in temperature before the movement was complete and froze the fabric, trapping the object against her forearm.

He walked toward Seraphine carefully. His body demanded that he stop, but that distance belonged to him. For weeks, she had watched him as a key, vessel, and successor.

Damon wanted her to clearly see what stood before her when everything ended.

”You could have saved Valcair,” Seraphine said. ”Entire territories depend on that energy.”

”Then you should have asked for help.”

”Powerful houses do not survive by asking.”

”That is a good explanation for why yours is dying.”

The answer struck harder than any attack. Seraphine tried to maintain her composure, but Damon saw the exhaustion, the pressure of generations, and the fear of becoming the duchess who watched Valcair lose everything.

He understood the fear.

He did not accept the methods.

”How many children would have been enough?” Damon asked. ”How many Edrans, how many Irises, and how many mines would you have broken before admitting you were not saving anything?”

Seraphine remained silent.

Morgana placed the letters, false seals, and records brought by Halder in front of the witnesses.

”Lord Mael, confirm under the authority of the Council who ordered the manipulation of the inspection.”

Mael looked toward Seraphine.

She did not answer his silent plea.

”Lady Seraphine Valcair,” he said. ”The orders came directly from her.”

Halder tried to deny it, but Aria opened the boxes and presented the signed copies. Sella confirmed the financial routes. Vorn remained silent, but his presence in chains beside the mechanism connected the medical experiments to the underground operations.

Seraphine finally looked around.

The entire network stood before her, not as protection, but as testimony.

Damon felt the vision of the fortress disappear. The guardian lowered its sword, and the black gate remained closed. The third door had recognized him, but the path had not opened completely.

It was not a failure.

The fortress would wait.

Arven did not need to wait any longer.

”It is over,” Morgana said.

Seraphine returned her gaze to Damon.

”Do you truly believe that?”

”In Arven, yes.”

Ingrivid placed containment cuffs around her arms. Seraphine did not resist. Perhaps she still imagined Valcair would purchase the Council, eliminate witnesses, and turn the capture into a political dispute. She continued calculating possibilities because she did not know how to exist any other way.

Damon approached one final time.

”The Heart remains in Arven. The children are safe. Your network has fallen. The Council has your letters, and your agents are alive to speak.”

Seraphine held his gaze.

”And you? Do you believe you are free of the inheritance?”

Damon looked toward the bandage around his arm, feeling Vorn’s mark lying quiet and the Heart distant beneath the mountain.

”No.”

The honesty seemed to surprise her.

”But now I decide when to continue.”

Seraphine was taken out of the chamber.

When the footsteps disappeared into the tunnel, Damon finally allowed his body to relax. His legs gave way, but Ester was already beside him. Morgana approached, still holding her sword, with Caeris’s blood on her sleeve and exhaustion across her face.

”Is it finished?” she asked.

Damon listened to the Heart. One slow beat crossed the stone, without a summons, threat, or response from his root.

”In Arven, it is finished.”

On the other side of the memory, beyond the black gate, the Tomb of the First Snow continued waiting.

But not that night.

That night, Damon would return to the mansion, see the survivors, confirm that the children had crossed the border, and sleep without anyone trying to decide his next step.

The future still held a fortress, a guardian, and the truth about Xue Lian.
