Strongest Incubus System

The false message began taking shape that same night, but Damon refused to let anyone send it before every part of the trap was ready. Seraphine had already shown that she preferred to act before everyone else, using incomplete information to force rushed decisions. This time, she would be made to wait without realizing she was waiting. Damon turned the strategy room into the center of the operation and remained in front of the map of Arven while Aria imitated Vorn’s handwriting, Iris corrected the internal codes, and Elizabeth adjusted every sentence to reflect the physician’s arrogance.

The contents needed to appear urgent, but not desperate. Vorn had supposedly escaped after activating the mechanism beneath the mines and witnessing Damon’s root begin connecting to the Heart. The blue lines on his arm would be described as the first sign of the third stage. Xue Lian’s memory would be opening on its own, and the complete awakening would occur in three days inside the eastern ventilation gallery, precisely where Seraphine believed there was a forgotten passage leading to the deep chamber.

Damon read the message three times before returning it to Aria.

”Remove the part where Vorn says he lost control of the mechanism.”

Aria raised her eyes.

”That would justify his escape.”

”It would also admit failure. Vorn would not write like that.”

Iris agreed with a small nod.

”He would say he interrupted the procedure voluntarily to prevent Damon from completing the fusion before she arrived.”

Aria changed the sentence.

”More arrogant?”

”More like Vorn,” Damon replied.

The physician remained imprisoned in the lower room, but his personality was present in every line. Damon did not need his cooperation because he already understood enough. Vorn would never admit defeat. He would turn his own capture into a choice, the broken mechanism into a test, and Damon’s survival into a predicted result. The message needed to carry exactly that kind of lie.

”Seraphine will verify the code through another channel,” Elizabeth said. ”She will not trust only an unexpected message.”

”We will use Mael,” Damon replied. ”He will send a confirmation to the Council claiming that an instability forced the inspection to remain in Arven. Halder will repeat it when he arrives.”

Morgana rested her hands against the table.

”Halder still has not answered.”

”He will. He believes Mael discovered something too important to record through a messenger.”

”And if he does not come?”

”Then Seraphine has already realized she lost contact with Mael, and we will not send Vorn’s message. The trap only works if she believes the network remains partially intact.”

Damon was not willing to depend on a single move. Seraphine had survived for years because her enemies built plans that required exact behavior. He would do the opposite. Every path would have an answer. If Halder came, he would be captured with the documents. If he fled, he would expose the connection. If Seraphine ignored the summons, Damon would use Vorn, Mael, and the evidence to destroy her politically before following the map. The trap in the mine was not their only chance at victory. It was merely the fastest opportunity to end things with her personally.

Ester remained beside the wall, watching Damon organize men, routes, and schedules while his own body was still recovering. The dark blue lines were covered, but they still reacted whenever he approached the map or mentioned the third door. She waited until everyone was occupied before approaching.

”You still have not explained what you intend to do when Seraphine arrives.”

Damon kept his eyes on the false gallery.

”Trap her.”

”How?”

”She will enter with few agents because she cannot bring an official entourage to a secret operation. Ingrivid seals the exit after they pass. Morgana presents the evidence in front of Mael, Halder, and witnesses from the Council. Elizabeth prevents outside communication. I keep Seraphine away from the false mechanism.”

”That is the political part. I asked about you.”

Damon finally looked at her.

Ester pointed toward his marked arm.

”Seraphine believes your root will fuse with the Heart. When she realizes the Heart is not in that gallery, she will try to use you as the connection. She will not come without a method.”

”I know.”

”Then what is your plan?”

Damon pulled back his sleeve and observed the lines hidden beneath the bandage.

”Let her try.”

Ester did not answer immediately. Her silence was more dangerous than any shout.

”I will not allow the root to connect,” Damon continued. ”But I need Seraphine to believe for several seconds that she succeeded. If she realizes the trap too early, she may destroy the evidence, kill Mael, or activate some remote mark.”

”And how do you intend to fake a fusion without opening the root?”

”Using Vorn’s mark.”

Ester slowly closed her eyes.

”Of course.”

”The mark creates the same external reaction. Blue lines, a drop in temperature, pressure on the meridians, and a partial opening of the memory. Seraphine does not know the difference.”

”Vorn does.”

”Vorn will be inside a stone cell without enough tongue to interrupt.”

Ester narrowed her eyes.

”Did you remove his tongue?”

”No. It was an expression.”

”With you, I need to confirm.”

Damon almost smiled, but returned to the plan.

”When Seraphine activates the method, I direct the energy toward the mark and let the lines rise. She believes the root responded. While she watches, Ingrivid closes the tunnel and Elizabeth blocks every transmission.”

”Then you cut it.”

”Then you cut it.”

The answer kept Ester silent for longer. Damon was not merely including her in the plan. He was giving her the moment when he would voluntarily lose control, trusting her to interrupt it before the root was reached.

”If I say it is rising too quickly, you do not argue.”

”I will not argue.”

”If the memory opens, you do not follow the guardian.”

”I will not follow.”

”If the true Heart responds from a distance, you end everything.”

”I end it.”

Ester watched him suspiciously.

”You are agreeing too quickly.”

”Because I know I need you.”

The honesty removed part of her anger. Not all of it, but enough.

”That was almost intelligent,” Ester said.

”I am having a strange week.”

The first confirmation arrived shortly before midnight. Halder Mays had answered Mael’s seal and agreed to return to Arven at dawn, bringing the original inspection records and two administrative witnesses. He showed no suspicion. He believed Mael had discovered an irregularity capable of advancing both of them within the Council.

Damon ordered that he not be captured on the road. Halder needed to enter the mansion, find the prepared hall, and believe for several minutes that everything remained normal. Mael would be seated at the table under guard, wearing official clothes and with a false mark concealing the restraints. Sella would remain out of sight. Iris would observe from behind a wall prepared by Aria, ready to confirm codes or identities.

”You are trusting Mael to cooperate,” Morgana said.

”He does not need to cooperate. He only needs to remain seated.”

”And if he tries to warn Halder?”

”Elizabeth will be in the room.”

Elizabeth smiled delicately.

”He will remain seated.”

No one asked anything else.

At dawn, Halder arrived in a Council carriage. He wore formal clothing, carried two boxes of documents, and had the satisfied expression of someone who believed he was about to take part in the downfall of a young and vulnerable duchess. Damon watched him enter through an opening in the side room, accompanied by Iris and Aria.

Halder greeted Morgana with a shallow bow, ignored Ingrivid, and showed calculated surprise when he saw Elizabeth. When Mael entered accompanied by two guards dressed as assistants, the scribe relaxed completely.

”I received your summons, sir,” Halder said. ”I brought the requested records and copies of the transfers conducted by Arven over the last three years.”

Mael looked toward Damon hidden behind the wall, although he could not see him. Elizabeth remained behind the inspector’s chair with one hand resting on its back.

It was warning enough.

”Place everything on the table,” Mael said.

His voice came out controlled, but Halder had known the man for too long. He noticed something. He did not immediately understand what, but his eyes began examining the room, counting guards and doors.

Damon opened the side passage and entered.

Halder went pale.

”Lord Damon. I was told you were incapacitated.”

”I recovered.”

The scribe tried moving a hand toward his inner pocket. Ingrivid seized his wrist before he found any object. Two guards closed the doors. Morgana opened one of the boxes and found documents bearing Valcair seals, payments to Havelock, instructions for Mael, and copies of false orders used against Arven.

Halder realized the game was over.

”You cannot arrest an official scribe of the Council.”

Morgana placed a letter signed by Seraphine in front of him.

”I can arrest an agent involved in fraud, kidnapping, and conspiracy against my territory.”

”That proves nothing.”

Damon removed half of the coin from inside his clothing. The other half, found on Mael, rested on the table.

”Then explain why Valcair’s internal code completes the object you carry.”

Halder did not answer.

Aria left the passage and opened her notebook.

”We also have the message you sent asking whether Mael had found enough evidence against Morgana before the inspection was complete. And copies of seven alterations made to Council records before the delegation arrived.”

Iris remained hidden, but her voice crossed the wall.

”He used the name Watcher Four.”

Halder turned toward the sound. Fear appeared immediately.

”She is dead.”

Iris stepped out of the shadows.

The scribe lost every attempt at control.

”No.”

Damon observed the reaction without visible satisfaction. Iris needed to see it. Halder had not asked whether she was injured, imprisoned, or protected. He had merely rejected her survival because it contradicted the order he had received.

”Seraphine will not save you,” Damon said. ”Mael believed she would save him. Vorn did too.”

Halder looked toward Mael and understood that the inspector was a prisoner. Then he examined the documents spread across the table. His own arrival had delivered the rest of the evidence.

”You want me to talk.”

”I do not need you to,” Damon replied. ”I need your seal.”

Halder became still.

Vorn’s message was sent one hour later, validated through Iris’s codes, Mael’s seal, and a brief confirmation from Halder. Damon did not explain the full contents to the scribe. He merely made him authenticate a sequence that appeared administrative. By the time Halder realized the true objective, the message had already departed through three different routes, all controlled by Arven.

Seraphine received the information that the third door would begin opening inside the eastern gallery in three days.

The time required for her to travel to Arven was slightly less than two.

Damon chose the third day because he wanted her to arrive tired, rushed, and without an opportunity to prepare a new network.

During the following hours, the false mine was transformed. Morgana’s men constructed an incomplete mechanism using parts removed from Vorn’s structure, similar enough to deceive someone who saw it quickly. Silver threads were attached to the walls without any connection to the Heart. A shallow pit was opened in the center and filled with cold stones taken from the true galleries. Ester drew marks on the floor capable of containing discharges, while Elizabeth prepared a barrier that would block outside communication for several minutes.

Damon followed every stage.

Not merely as the target.

He tested the entrances, identified blind spots, chose where Seraphine would believe the Heart was located, and determined the position of every ally. Morgana would remain inside a side chamber with the evidence and two neutral representatives summoned under the pretense of completing the inspection. Mael and Halder would be presented alive. Vorn would remain imprisoned in another tunnel, close enough for Seraphine to know he had been captured but far from the mechanism.

Ingrivid would command the sealing of the exits.

Elizabeth would isolate the chamber.

Ester would remain beside Damon.

”You are positioning everyone around yourself,” Morgana commented during the final review.

”Seraphine is coming for me.”

”And that does not bother you?”

”It does.”

Morgana waited for more.

Damon looked at the false mechanism.

”For a long time, I thought being the target meant I needed to face everything alone. Now I realize it only means I can choose where the enemy looks.”

Morgana nodded.

”While the others close the trap.”

”Exactly.”

On the night before the third day, Damon remained alone for several minutes inside the false chamber. He sat on a stone, closed his eyes, and listened to the true Heart far below and far away. Its rhythm was slow again. There was no provocation, bell, or forced conductor.

Even so, he felt the structure knew what was about to happen.

”You do not participate,” Damon said into the darkness.

The Heart beat once.

The root responded with faint pressure, but he kept the flow closed.

”This fight is mine.”

Xue Lian’s memory opened for an instant. The fortress gate appeared before him, covered in snow. The guardian remained on the other side with its sword lowered.

Damon waited for some phrase.

None came.

For the first time, the memory did not try to teach, test, or indicate a path.

It merely watched.

Damon opened his eyes when Ester entered the chamber.

”Talking to the mountain?”

”Establishing boundaries.”

”Did it work?”

”It did not answer.”

”Perhaps it is learning.”

Ester sat beside him and began checking the bandages around his arm. Vorn’s lines still existed, but they remained stable. She added two cutting points near the shoulder and a third at the base of his neck.

”When Seraphine activates the mark, you will have twenty seconds at most.”

”That is enough.”

”You do not know what she will use.”

”That is why I have you.”

Ester finished the bandage.

”If this goes wrong, there will be no time for another argument.”

”Then complain now.”

”You are reckless, irritating, arrogant, incapable of resting, and have an unhealthy relationship with anything capable of killing you.”

Damon thought about it.

”I expected something more specific.”

”You also woke from a coma with white hair and decided that was a secondary problem.”

”It looks good.”

Ester tried to maintain a serious expression, but gave up for an instant.

The moment ended when footsteps sounded at the tunnel entrance. Ingrivid approached, already wearing complete armor.

”The watchers found movement on the northern road. Two unmarked carriages, six horses, and approximately ten people.”

Damon stood.

”Seraphine?”

”One of the witnesses recognized Caeris Valcair, captain of her personal guard.”

Damon adjusted the sleeve over the marks.

The wait was over.

Morgana took her position. Elizabeth began the barrier. The knights disappeared throughout the tunnels. Mael and Halder were led into the side chamber. Vorn received a chair facing the entrance because Damon wanted Seraphine to see the defeated physician before hearing any explanation.

He remained alone in front of the false mechanism, with Ester hidden only a few steps away behind a stone wall.

The first sounds of the visitors came almost half an hour later.

Boots over stone.

Metal touching metal.

Restrained breathing.

Seraphine did not enter immediately. Her men examined the tunnel, tested the floor, and searched for signs of an ambush. They found exactly what Damon allowed them to find: traces of guards withdrawn in haste, abandoned tools, and a trail of false blood near the mechanism.

Finally, a figure appeared at the chamber entrance.

Seraphine wore dark traveling clothes without jewelry or any visible Valcair symbol. The elegant smile from the hearing had disappeared. There, she was not a representative of the Council, a mediator, or a noble concerned with regional stability.

She was the woman who had built everything.

Six agents entered behind her. Caeris remained at her side, wielding a narrow sword. A metal box was placed on the floor.

Seraphine observed Damon, the pit, the silver threads, and the dark blue lines visible across his neck. For several seconds, she said nothing.

Neither did Damon.

She finally walked halfway into the chamber.

”Vorn was right,” Seraphine said. ”You reached the third door.”

Damon kept his breathing controlled.

”He was wrong about many things.”

”But not about you.”

Seraphine opened the box.

Inside was a circular structure made of silver, bone, and small fragments of bells. It was not the same as Vorn’s mechanism. It was older, more complex, and carried symbols similar to those seen on the fortress gate.

The mark on Damon’s arm reacted immediately.

Seraphine smiled.

”You believed I would come without a key.”

Damon felt Ester prepare the cut behind the wall.

The blue lines began rising.

He did not try to stop them.

Not yet.

”No,” Damon replied as frost slowly covered the ground around his boots. ”I knew you would bring one.”

Seraphine touched the center of the circle.

The pressure struck Damon.

The memory opened.

The root contracted.

The false mechanism vibrated as though the Heart were beneath that chamber.

Seraphine watched every reaction with absolute attention, convinced she had finally reached the moment she had spent years preparing.

Damon raised his eyes toward her.

”I only needed to see which one it would be.”

Behind Seraphine, the mine entrance froze.

The stones closed.

Ingrivid appeared above the passage with her sword drawn. Elizabeth completed the barrier, cutting every transmission to the outside. Morgana entered the side chamber accompanied by the Council witnesses, while Mael, Halder, and Vorn were brought into the light in chains.

Seraphine did not look at them.

She continued staring at Damon.

For the first time, however, her smile lost its certainty.

Damon felt the mark reach his shoulder.

Eighteen seconds.

Ester waited.

Seraphine had entered.

The network was closed.

Now all that remained was to destroy the woman at its center.
