Strongest Incubus System

Damon heard Seraphine’s voice without being in the courtyard.

Not the exact words. Ester’s deaf room was doing its job. The basins of water in the corners, the ground stone along the edges, the thick cloths at the door, and the absence of loose metal muffled everything. Even so, some vibrations crossed through. Not sound. Intention. Presence. A light pressure against the senses, like fingers testing a lock.

He was sitting on the bed, back against the wall, bandaged wrist resting on his knee. Ester was beside him, but she did not speak. She did not need to. She watched the rhythm of his breathing, the temperature of his skin, the way his fingers contracted every time something outside changed.

Damon hated it.

Not Ester’s surveillance. Unfortunately, he had already gotten used to that. What he hated was being still while Seraphine entered the mansion. The woman who had used the mines, the children, the old Duchess, Albert, Havelock, Vara, Maeve, and perhaps half of Arven’s recent problems was now crossing the courtyard with a smile and a diplomatic excuse.

And he was in bed.

”You are thinking of leaving,” Ester said.

”I am thinking of many things.”

”That is one of them.”

”Yes.”

”Then stop.”

Damon looked at her. ”You say that as if thoughts obey.”

”Yours need to start.”

He released the air slowly. The root in his chest was quiet, but not asleep. Since the mine, it was as if it had learned to keep one ear open. Every deeper vibration in the world passed near him and left a trace. The Heart beat far away, beneath the mountain. Seraphine moved through the mansion. The bells were stored away, but their memory remained in his teeth.

Damon closed his eyes.

Thum.

It was not strong.

But it was there.

He listened.

He did not answer.

Ester noticed. ”Again?”

”Yes.”

”Closer?”

”No. Clearer.”

She did not like the difference.

”Describe it.”

”As if before, I heard through a thick wall. Now the wall is still there, but it has cracks.”

”Cracks are bad.”

”They are also places where you can see through.”

”Damon.”

”I did not say it was good.”

She held his wrist. She did not squeeze. Only touched. Her touch was warm compared to his skin. ”You need to stop looking for usefulness in everything that hurts you.”

He opened his eyes and looked at her.

The sentence struck deeper than it should have.

Damon almost made a joke. It was the easy path. But he was too tired to pretend he did not understand.

”If something hurts me and I do not understand it, it will hurt me again,” he said. ”If I understand it, at least I choose how to bleed.”

”That sentence was horrible.”

”But true.”

”Still horrible.”

He almost smiled.

The pressure in the air changed.

Ester felt it too. She turned her face to the door even before anyone knocked. Three short knocks. The agreed signal. Ester opened only a crack. Aria was on the other side, face serious, holding a small wooden board with quick notes.

”Damon needs to hear this,” she said.

”He needs to rest.”

”Seraphine asked about him.”

Damon straightened.

Ester’s expression hardened. ”How?”

”Far too politely. She said she had heard rumors about Arven’s ’glacial protector’ and would like to express concern for his health. Morgana answered that you were unwell after the events in the mines.”

”Did Seraphine react?” Damon asked.

Aria nodded. ”She smiled a little. Then asked whether the indisposition was caused by wounds or by resonance.”

Ester went still.

Damon felt the root pulse once.

Small.

Controllable.

”She knows,” he said.

”She suspects,” Ester corrected.

”She knows enough.”

Aria looked down the corridor, then spoke again. ”Elizabeth redirected the conversation to Havelock and the false contracts. Lord Mael tried to keep everything in the financial field. Seraphine is allowing it.”

”Because that does not matter to her,” Damon said.

”Yes. And there is more. She brought a private doctor.”

Ester narrowed her eyes. ”Name.”

”Dr. Caelis Vorn.”

Ester recognized it. Damon noticed.

”Who is he?”

”A specialist in core disorders and spiritual containment,” Ester said. ”He worked for noble houses that performed experiments they later pretended to call treatment.”

”So he did not come for Havelock.”

”No.”

Aria handed over the board. ”He requested permission to evaluate the injured from the mine. Morgana denied it for now. Seraphine said she will insist if there is risk to regional stability.”

Damon looked at his own hand.

”She wants to reach the children.”

”And you,” Ester said.

”Mainly me.”

Ester did not answer.

Aria looked at Damon carefully. ”Morgana asked me to ask if you feel anything different since Seraphine entered.”

Damon closed his eyes again.

This time, he did not search for the Heart. He searched for what was closer. The mansion. The walls. The footsteps. The air. There was a lot mixed together: servants’ fear, guards’ tension, Ingrivid’s dry irritation somewhere, Elizabeth’s cold presence like a blade kept in its sheath. Morgana was harder to feel, not because she was weak, but because she was too whole in her decision.

And there was something else.

Damon breathed slowly.

A false sound.

Not sound.

A small, controlled vibration, wrapped in cloth and rune.

He opened his eyes.

”She brought a bell.”

Ester let out a low curse.

Aria went pale. ”But everyone was inspected.”

”It is not loose. It is muffled. Maybe in a box. Maybe dismantled. But there is resonant silver in the mansion.”

”Do you know where?” Ester asked.

Damon tried to focus. The root wanted to follow. He held it.

”Not exactly. It is far. Probably with the delegation. Not in the courtyard. Inside.”

Aria pressed the board to her chest. ”I will warn Morgana.”

”Wait,” Damon said.

She stopped.

Damon looked at Ester. ”If I felt it, did Seraphine want me to feel it?”

Ester was quiet for a second. ”Maybe.”

”Then warning directly may be what she wants. Morgana moves, Seraphine sees who reacts, confirms that I felt it.”

Aria bit her lip. ”Then what do I say?”

Damon thought. Not like a warrior. Not like someone trying to break a door. Like someone trying not to answer the bell.

”Tell Morgana that Seraphine’s doctor must be isolated under sanitary protocol before seeing any injured person. Nothing about a bell. Only protocol.”

Ester looked at him.

Damon continued, ”Tell Elizabeth to request that every object brought by the delegation be sealed in ground stone for safety against contamination from the mines. As if it were a medical concern. If they refuse, they look reckless. If they accept, the bell disappears.”

Aria began to smile. ”That is good.”

”Do not look too happy when you say it.”

”I make no promises.”

”And tell Ingrivid to place guards near the children without moving the children. If they move, Seraphine notices.”

Aria wrote quickly. ”And you?”

”I stay here.”

Aria blinked.

Damon looked at Ester. ”I am learning, apparently.”

Ester remained serious, but there was something different in her face. Maybe approval. Maybe relief. Maybe only exhaustion.

Aria left.

The door closed.

Damon stared at the wood.

The impulse to stand was still there. But for the first time, it did not seem like the best option. Seraphine expected force. Expected reaction. Expected him to be the kind of creature that, when provoked, crossed through walls. Maybe that was what all the reports said. Maybe that was what the old Duchess would have written about him, if she had survived. Damon, the useful monster. Damon, the living cold in human form. Damon, the key.

He tightened his fingers over his knee.

”I hate this,” he said.

”Staying still?”

”Being useful by staying still.”

Ester sat again. ”You are discovering the concept of discipline.”

”I do not like it.”

”No one asked.”

”Seraphine wants me to be instinct.”

”Yes.”

”Then I need to be choice.”

Ester spent a few seconds without answering. Then she nodded.

”Exactly.”

Damon closed his eyes again.

Not to sleep.

To listen.

Thum.

The Heart beat.

He let it pass.

Downstairs, the official meeting continued. This time, Damon tried to feel without grabbing. There was a pattern in the mansion. Voices rising and falling. Tension accumulated in certain corridors. Guards changing position. And that muffled, discreet vibration, like an insect inside a box. The bell did not call.

It waited.

So did Seraphine.

Time passed slowly.

After almost an hour, the door opened again. It was not Aria. It was Morgana.

She entered alone.

Ester stood. ”You should not be here.”

”I know.”

Damon looked at her. ”It is contagious.”

Morgana ignored that. Her face was controlled, but there was anger beneath it. ”Your plan worked. Elizabeth demanded sanitary sealing of the delegation’s objects. Lord Mael could not refuse without looking negligent. Seraphine accepted.”

”Did she hand over the bell?”

”She handed over a box with medical instruments, silver cups, cutlery, and a small dismantled handbell.”

Ester clenched her jaw. ”Handbell.”

”Officially used for hearing tests.”

Damon let out a dry laugh. ”She is shameless.”

”Yes,” Morgana said. ”And too calm. As if losing the bell does not matter.”

Damon became serious. ”Then she already got what she wanted.”

”Maybe.”

”What happened when they sealed the box?”

Morgana looked at him. ”Did you feel something?”

”No. That is the problem.”

Ester understood first. ”The vibration disappeared?”

”Yes,” Damon said. ”Completely.”

Morgana went quiet.

Damon continued, ”If it were the only bell, I would feel relief. But it feels more like... exchange.”

”Another object,” Ester said.

”Or another person,” Damon said.

Morgana closed her hand. ”The doctor.”

”Maybe. Or Seraphine brought someone marked.”

”A child?”

”I do not know.”

Morgana breathed slowly. It was the same breath she had used before giving orders in the courtyard. ”There are three young pages in the delegation. Two teenagers and a twelve-year-old girl. All with Council documentation.”

Damon felt his stomach harden. ”The girl.”

”She may just be a page.”

”And she may not.”

Ester picked up her bag. ”I will examine her.”

Morgana shook her head. ”Not directly. Seraphine would notice.”

Damon looked at the door. ”I can feel it if I get close.”

Ester turned to him. ”No.”

”I did not say enter the meeting. Just the corridor.”

”You can barely sit without pain.”

”That is an exaggeration.”

”It is a description.”

Morgana watched the two, then spoke, ”Seraphine asked to see you.”

Ester answered immediately, ”No.”

Damon did not answer as quickly.

Morgana continued, ”I denied it. She insisted. She said that, as a representative of Valcair and an interested party in the stability of the mines, she needed to evaluate whether you represented a risk to the territory.”

”She wants to see me react.”

”Yes.”

”Then let us give her something to see.”

Ester looked at him as if she already hated the sentence before it ended.

Damon stood slowly. His body complained. His wrist hurt. The root stayed quiet.

”I will not react,” he said.

”You do not know that,” Ester said.

”No. But I need to discover it before the mines.”

”Damon.”

”Seraphine is here. The Heart is far away. The main bell was sealed. This is the smallest version of the test we will have. If I cannot look at her without turning into a key, then we have already lost.”

Morgana did not like the logic. But she did not deny it.

Ester stood in front of him. ”Five minutes.”

”Three are enough.”

”I said five because I will interrupt in two.”

”Fair.”

”No provocation.”

”My existence is already a provocation to her.”

”No additional provocation.”

Damon nodded.

Ester removed part of the bandage from his wrist and adjusted the cut points. It hurt again. She placed two fingers on his nape and pressed a point that made his entire arm tingle.

”If I touch here and tell you to leave, you leave.”

”Yes.”

”No matter what she says.”

”Yes.”

”Even if she speaks of Xue Lian.”

Damon was quiet for half a second.

Ester pressed harder.

”Yes,” he said.

Morgana opened the door.

The path to the main room seemed too long. Damon walked without a hood. Not because he wanted to show himself off, but because hiding his white hair now would be useless pretending. Servants looked away. Guards straightened. He noticed every reaction and tried not to use any of them as armor.

At the door to the room, he heard Seraphine speaking.

”...I understand the Duchess’s sensitivity, but Arven has already proven it cannot keep its internal problems contained.”

Damon entered.

The room stopped.

Lord Joren Mael sat at the table, with two scribes behind him. Elizabeth stood by the documents. Ingrivid was against the side wall. Aria was near the evidence boxes. Seraphine was seated with her hands folded, green gloves immaculate, face serene.

She looked at Damon.

Her smile did not widen.

But her eyes changed.

”So this is Damon.”

He stopped beside Morgana. Ester remained half a step behind.

”Depends on who is asking,” Damon said.

Seraphine tilted her head. ”Lady Seraphine Valcair.”

”I know.”

”I have heard a great deal about you.”

”My condolences.”

Lord Mael coughed, uncomfortable.

Elizabeth looked at the floor for an instant.

Seraphine did not lose her calm. ”They say you saved children today.”

”Yes.”

”And descended into the mine.”

”Part of it.”

”Brave.”

”Reckless, according to my doctor.”

Ester spoke behind him: ”Correct.”

Seraphine looked at Ester, then back at Damon. ”And what did you feel down there?”

The room became quieter.

Damon felt the question try to open space inside him. Not magic. Not exactly. Only precision. She knew where to touch.

He breathed.

”Cold,” he said.

”Only that?”

”Dust. Mold. Bad air. Incompetent people performing a ritual in an unstable place.”

Aria lowered her face to hide a reaction.

Seraphine rested her fingers on the table. ”You did not feel the Heart?”

The word crossed the room.

Thum.

Far away, beneath the mountain.

Damon heard it.

The root wanted to answer.

He let the sound pass.

One second.

Two.

Nothing came out.

”You speak like Nera,” Damon said.

For the first time, Seraphine truly went still.

Small.

Almost invisible.

But Damon saw it.

And liked it.

”You met Nera Solt?” she asked.

”She talks a lot for someone you tried to hide.”

”A sick woman may say many things.”

”Guilty men too.”

Lord Mael shifted in his chair. ”This meeting should not deviate into unstructured accusations.”

Morgana placed a letter on the table. ”Then let us return to structure. This is a transfer tied to Darius Kelm, an agent associated with Valcair. This is Havelock’s signature. This is the list of children sought by men carrying silver bells. And this is the statement from Vara Leth, captured while trying to take a marked child to the mines.”

Seraphine did not look at the papers.

She looked at Damon.

”You look tired,” she said.

”I am.”

”Wounded?”

”That too.”

”And yet you came to see me.”

”I wanted to know if you looked more impressive in person.”

”And do I?”

Damon looked at her for a few seconds.

”No. You look like someone who sends others to touch the cold.”

The sentence landed.

Not like a dramatic blow. Like a small, filthy truth placed on the table.

Seraphine slowly stood.

Ester touched Damon’s nape.

Leave, the touch meant.

Damon did not leave yet.

Seraphine spoke softly. ”Careful, boy. There are things beneath Arven that do not care about your courage.”

Damon held her gaze.

”I know. I heard one of them.”

The root pulsed.

He held it.

”But at least it does not pretend it is helping.”

Morgana took a step forward before Seraphine could answer. ”The hearing is finished for today. Lord Mael, the official documents are available. Lady Seraphine, your delegation will remain in designated quarters and under House Arven’s security protocols.”

Seraphine looked at Morgana, then at Damon.

”Naturally.”

Damon left before Ester had to drag him.

In the corridor, the pain arrived all at once. He leaned a hand against the wall, took a deep breath, and almost fell. Ester caught him by the arm.

”Idiot,” she said.

”I left.”

”After staying too long.”

”But I left.”

She did not answer. She was busy keeping him from sliding to the floor.

Morgana appeared shortly after.

”You managed,” she said.

Damon looked at the closed door of the room.

”No,” he said, panting. ”I confirmed something.”

”What?”

”She is not afraid of the Council. She is not afraid of you. She is not afraid of me.”

Ester tightened her grip on his arm. ”And that is new?”

”No. What is new is what she fears.”

Morgana waited.

Damon breathed slowly.

”She fears Nera.”

The corridor went quiet.

He continued, ”When I spoke of Nera, she froze. Only for an instant. Seraphine can lose documents, agents, bells. But Nera knows something she cannot replace.”

Morgana looked at Elizabeth, who had just left the room behind her.

Elizabeth had heard enough. ”Then our resolution begins with Nera.”

Damon closed his eyes for a second.

The Heart beat far away.

Thum.

This time, he did not answer.

But he smiled a little.

”Finally,” he said. ”Something she wants silent.”
