From American Internet Celebrity to God Among Men

42: Chapter 42 Countermeasures and Ascending to Higher GroundEarly Monday morning, Alex sat across from Detective Chen Zhiming in a meeting room at the West Los Angeles Division of the LAPD.

A dozen photos were spread out on the table, all of the same car taken from different angles: a silver Toyota with different license plates, but the subtle scratches on the body and the wheel rim patterns were identical.

”Cloned plates,” Detective Chen Zhiming pointed at the photos. ”Very professional technique. We checked these plates; they all belong to stolen or scrapped vehicles. The car itself is stolen, and the engine and chassis numbers have been ground off.”

Alex looked at the photos calmly. ”Can you track the user?”

”It’s very difficult,” Detective Chen Zhiming said truthfully. ”This mode of operation indicates the other party has criminal experience or has hired a professional team. They won’t leave fingerprints or DNA, and they won’t use communication devices that can be traced.”

He paused and looked at Alex. ”But we can change our thinking. You’re so young and have no criminal record. Why would you be the target of such professional surveillance? It doesn’t fit the cost-benefit analysis.”

Alex was silent for a few seconds before deciding to be partially honest. ”Derek Winston’s father.”

Detective Chen Zhiming didn’t look surprised; he just nodded. ”I guessed as much. Political figures rarely retaliate directly. They prefer using this kind of ’legal trouble’—shadowing, harassment, and creating psychological pressure to make you break down or make a mistake yourself.”

”So there’s nothing that can be done legally?”

”There is a way, but it requires evidence.” Detective Chen Zhiming pulled a document from a folder. ”I applied for an investigation warrant for that shell company. Although the company itself is clean, we found financial transactions between it and a private investigation firm called ’Greystone Security.’ And on Greystone Security’s client list is a legal consultant for Senator Winston’s office.”

The chain was clear: the political figure hired a private investigation firm through a legal consultant, and the investigation firm used a shell company as cover to monitor the target.

”But all of this is in a legal gray area,” Detective Chen Zhiming closed the folder. ”Shadowing itself isn’t illegal as long as it doesn’t constitute harassment or a threat. Hiring a private investigation firm isn’t illegal either. Even transferring money through a shell company isn’t illegal as long as the tax reporting is compliant.”

He looked at Alex. ”This is reality. Some people stand on the edge of the shadows; you know they’re there, but the light of the law can’t reach them.”

Alex understood the subtext: there was only so much the police could do.

”I understand.” He stood up. ”Thank you for telling me this.”

Detective Chen Zhiming also stood up and handed him a business card. ”This is my private number. If the situation escalates—I mean, if they move from observation to action—call me immediately. Until then...”

”Until then, I’ll handle it myself.” Alex took the card.

As he walked out of the police station, the Los Angeles sun was blinding. Alex put on his sunglasses and headed toward the parking lot. Crisis Prediction didn’t send any warnings, but he could feel certain gazes following him from a distance.

He didn’t go home; instead, he went to school.

---

In a communications class, the professor was explaining ”Narrative Strategies in the New Media Era.” Alex sat in the back row with his laptop open, but the screen displayed encrypted note-taking software.

He was formulating a counter-plan.

Since the law couldn’t intervene for the time being, he needed to use other methods to increase the opponent’s cost of attack. The core principle: make them realize that the cost of continued harassment far outweighed any potential gains.

The plan had three steps:

Step one: Increase public visibility. The more public a figure is, the greater the risk of being targeted—because any ”accident” would trigger attention and investigation. He needed to increase his public activities and media exposure.

Step two: Build an ally network. Isolated targets are the easiest to attack. He needed more people to know that if something happened to him, someone would demand answers.

Step three: Prepare counter-materials. Since the other party was collecting information on him, he could also collect information on them. Not through illegal theft, but by organizing things through public channels that might embarrass them.

After class, Lena found him, her eyes full of worry. ”Are you okay? Sarah told me about the stalking.”

”I’m fine.” Alex smiled. ”Actually, I need you to do me a favor.”

”What favor?”

”Does your medical school have a ’Student Mental Health Support Group’?”

Lena nodded. ”Yes, I’m one of the volunteers. Why?”

”I want to do a talk with the theme ’Psychological Adjustment for Content Creators Facing Cyberbullying and Real-Life Harassment’,” Alex said. ”Not to complain, but to share coping strategies. Do you think that’s feasible?”

Lena’s eyes lit up. ”It’s very feasible! Our group leader has been looking for someone with real experience to do a sharing session. And... it will let more people know what you’re going through.”

This was exactly the effect Alex wanted. Publicly talking about the experience of being harassed in a protected academic environment not only established the legitimacy of psychological support but also sent a signal to the observers in the dark: I’m not afraid of you; I even dare to talk about this publicly.

”You set the time,” he said.

”This Friday afternoon!” Lena immediately took out her phone to record it. ”I’ll confirm with the group leader right away. Alex, this is really brave.”

”It’s not bravery,” Alex said calmly. ”It’s tactics.”

On Tuesday, the Horizon Outdoors brand short film entered the final editing stage.

Alex worked in his apartment for twelve consecutive hours. Deep Focus allowed him to maintain extremely high efficiency during long working hours, while Dynamic Visual Enhancement allowed him to control the rhythm of every frame with millimeter-level precision.

The core story of the short film was simple: a young creator uses the most limited resources to find beauty and stories in the city. But Alex embedded multiple layers of meaning within it—

When the protagonist (himself) was filming on the streets with a phone, the edges of the frame would occasionally catch the figures of ”observers” (he had quietly inserted the blurred images of those stalkers).

When the protagonist encountered difficulties (unstable tripod, sudden light changes), the voiceover would say: ”On the creative path, you will encounter all kinds of accidents. Some are technical problems, and some... are something else.”

When the protagonist finally used the simplest method to fix the phone on the beach and captured the perfect sunset, the voiceover said: ”Limitations always exist. But a true creator can turn limitations into a frame.”

This wasn’t just a brand promotion; it was a creative manifesto and an open letter to the observers in the shadows: I know you’re there, but you can’t affect me.

At ten o’clock in the evening, the final version was completed. Alex sent it to Kevin with a note: ”This is the story I want to tell.”

Thirty minutes later, Kevin called, his voice trembling with excitement. ”Alex... this is a hundred times better than I expected. This isn’t just an ad; it’s... art. We will definitely put all our effort into promoting this short film.”

”What about the release timing?” Alex asked.

”It was originally scheduled for three weeks from now, but after seeing this... I want to move it up. How about next Monday? We’ll use all our channels to launch it simultaneously online and offline.”

”That works,” Alex said. ”But I have one request.”

”What request?”

”On the release day, I want to hold a small premiere and exchange meeting at the school. Invite student creators and the media. Horizon can provide title sponsorship.”

There was silence on the other end for a few seconds before Kevin understood. ”You want to increase public exposure.”

”Yes.”

”Wise,” Kevin said immediately. ”We’ll arrange it. Venue, equipment, promotion—we’ll handle everything. You just need to be there to share your creative insights.”

Hanging up the phone, Alex looked out the window. Los Angeles at night was like a sleeping giant with countless blinking eyes on its body.

He summoned the system interface. The growth rate of his fame was accelerating again due to the upcoming release of the brand short film. His current reserves were enough to redeem that important milestone ability.

【Comprehensive Physical Enhancement (Primary)】—Comprehensively improves basic qualities of strength, endurance, agility, and recovery. Redemption requires 120,000 fame points.

This time, the feeling was stronger than any previous time.

A warm torrent gushed from his heart, quickly sweeping through his entire body. He could clearly feel his muscle fibers subtly reorganizing, becoming denser and more elastic; his bone density seemed to be increasing, and joint stability improved; the basic capacity of his cardiopulmonary function expanded, and the oxygen exchange efficiency of every breath increased; even the sensitivity of his skin and senses was enhanced.

This wasn’t turning into a superman, but rather improving the overall performance of the ”machine” that was his body by 30%—all parts were upgraded simultaneously to work in synergy.

He stood up and moved his body. His movements were lighter, his sense of power more solid, and his balance more outstanding. If he were to test it now, his hundred-meter sprint, vertical jump, and endurance limits would all show significant improvement.

But this improvement was gradual and holistic; it wouldn’t arouse suspicion like suddenly gaining immense power. He could attribute it to ”persistent disciplined training and a healthy lifestyle.”

More importantly, Comprehensive Physical Enhancement created a synergistic effect with the existing Primary Self-Healing. The basic speed of his self-healing ability increased, and recovery efficiency became higher. Now, the scratch left by the warehouse on his arm had completely disappeared, with not even the faintest mark to be found.

He walked to the mirror. There was no obvious change in his appearance—his muscle lines were slightly more defined, but still within a reasonable range; his skin condition was better, and his complexion was improved, but that could also be explained as ”sleeping well lately.”

Perfect.

---

On Wednesday, Alex went to the modification shop where Sarah’s boyfriend worked.

Sarah’s boyfriend was named Tom. He was in his thirties, sturdily built, with arms full of tattoos, but his gaze was gentle. He was currently changing the brake pads on an old-fashioned muscle car.

”Alex, right?” Tom put down his tools and wiped his hands. ”Sarah told me about your situation. What do you need?”

”I want to ask some safety questions,” Alex said. ”Regarding vehicles.”

Tom nodded and led Alex to the workshop in the back of the shop, closing the door. ”Go ahead.”

Alex described his situation: being stalked by a professional team, facing the threat of possible escalation, and needing to improve the safety of his daily commute.

Tom listened very seriously. ”What do you drive?”

”A used Honda Civic.”

”Good car, reliable, but not safe,” Tom said bluntly. ”The body is too light, and the crash structure is average. If someone really wants to manufacture a ’traffic accident,’ you’re in danger.”

He walked to a whiteboard and began drawing diagrams. ”I’ll give you a few suggestions. First, install a high-quality dashcam, front and rear dual cameras, with a parking monitoring function. If someone lingers near your car, it will automatically record.”

”Second, change the tires to run-flats. Expensive, but worth it—even if they’re punctured, you can still drive for 80 kilometers at 80 kilometers per hour, which is enough to get you to a safe place.”

”Third, and most importantly.” Tom turned around, his expression serious. ”Learn Defensive Driving. Not the regular driving school stuff, but driving techniques to actually deal with malicious threats: how to identify being followed, how to lose a tail, and how to create space to escape when being boxed in.”

He paused. ”I can teach you. I have experience teaching Defensive Driving to law enforcement.”

Alex didn’t hesitate. ”When can we start?”

”Saturday morning, I’ll take you to a closed course,” Tom said. ”But Alex, I have to be clear—these techniques are a last resort. The best defense is always avoiding danger. You need to change your lifestyle habits: irregular commuting times, frequently changing routes, and being aware of your surroundings.”

”I understand,” Alex said. ”Thank you.”

Tom waved his hand. ”No thanks needed. Sarah is very worried about you. And...” He smiled. ”I’ve seen your videos. The one teaching people how to make movies with a phone. My daughter wants to learn photography; I bought her a camera, but she just likes the way you teach. So, consider this a return favor.”

As he left the modification shop, Alex felt a bit more at ease. Crisis Prediction didn’t warn him about Tom—the man sincerely wanted to help.

This was another piece of the ally network puzzle: not just friends and business partners, but also these people with expertise in specific fields who were willing to offer help.

---

On Thursday, Alex went to the medical school’s mental health support group to share his story.

[part:gemini-3.1-flash-lite]

There were over twenty people sitting in the classroom, mostly medical students, along with a few students from other majors. The organizer was a gentle, middle-aged female professor who emphasized at the beginning: ”Today is not a grievance session, but a sharing of experience and learning. We will explore how to maintain psychological resilience in high-pressure environments.”

Alex’s sharing was very restrained. He didn’t name names but simply described several types of pressure that content creators might face: negative online reviews, accusations of plagiarism, and jealousy and harassment in reality. He focused on sharing coping strategies:

· Establish boundaries between work and life (”I have a rule: I don’t read comments after ten at night”)

· Cultivate a support system (”There are a few friends to whom I can say ’I’m having a really hard time today’ without any reservations”)

· Maintain the original intention of creation (”Whenever I feel pressured, I ask myself: Why did I start doing this in the first place?”)

· Seek professional help when necessary (”Psychologists are not for ’crazy people’; they are for people who need to cope with stress”)

After the sharing session ended, the Q&A session was very lively. A student asked: ”If harassment in reality has reached the level of stalking, what should one do?”

Alex replied: ”First, call the police. Second, increase public visibility—let more people know what you are going through. Third, never face it alone. The goal of harassers is to isolate you and make you feel helpless. Break this isolation, and their power is cut in half.”

Another student asked: ”Aren’t you afraid?”

”I am,” Alex said candidly. ”But there are two types of fear: one that paralyzes you, and one that makes you vigilant. I need the second one.”

When the sharing session ended, several students came to him to exchange contact information. The female professor who organized the event also walked over and whispered: ”If you need it, our school’s psychological counseling center can provide you with support. It’s completely confidential.”

”Thank you,” Alex said.

As he walked out of the medical school building, Crisis Prediction sent a faint warning. He scanned his surroundings and discovered a black Mercedes parked at the edge of the parking lot—it wasn’t a car he had seen before, but the model and color appeared too formal, looking out of place in the campus environment.

There was someone in the car, but they didn’t get out.

Alex did not avoid it. He took out his phone, pretended to take a selfie, but actually took a picture of the car and the license plate. Then he walked to his own car, started it, and slowly drove away.

In the rearview mirror, the Mercedes did not follow him.

But he knew the message had been delivered: I am talking about being stalked in public, I have supporters, and I am not afraid of you.

--- On Friday afternoon, the premiere event for the Horizon Outdoors brand short film was held in the school auditorium.

Horizon had rented out the entire small auditorium and set it up professionally: a large screen in the center of the stage, brand display areas on both sides, and a refreshment area in the back. Nearly a hundred people had come—students, media reporters, photography enthusiasts, and even a few industry insiders whom Alex had met at industry events.

Kevin greeted him at the door and whispered: ”A reporter from the culture section of the Los Angeles Times is here, and Creative People magazine has also sent someone. There are also two local TV stations. The attention is higher than we expected.”

Alex nodded and walked into the auditorium.

The event was hosted by Kevin, who gave an opening, briefly introduced Horizon’s new sub-brand strategy, and then turned the stage over to Alex.

”Hello everyone.” Alex stood in the center of the stage, under the spotlight, feeling a strange sense of calm. ”What I want to share today is not a success story, but a story about creating within limitations.”

He played the short film.

Eight minutes, the whole room was silent. When the final sunset shot appeared, accompanied by the line ”Limitations will always exist. But a true creator can turn limitations into a picture frame,” someone started clapping, and then the applause spread, turning into a continuous tide.

The screening ended, and the lights came on. Alex saw several students in the audience wiping away tears.

In the Q&A session, most questions revolved around the creation itself. But the reporter from the Los Angeles Times asked a deeper question: ”Some shots in the short film seem to imply the external pressure faced by the creator. Is this based on real experience?”

The question was sharp.

Alex paused for a moment, choosing to answer honestly but with restraint: ”All creation comes from real experience. As a creator in the public eye, you will face all kinds of voices—encouraging, critical, and sometimes overstepping boundaries. What matters is how to maintain the purity of creation in such an environment.”

He didn’t say more, but the reporter understood the subtext.

After the event, the media crowded around for interviews. Alex patiently answered every question, maintaining a professional and open attitude throughout. He specifically mentioned the upcoming exploration of an artistic collaboration with Taylor Swift (using very cautious wording, ”exploring mutually interesting creative directions”), which sparked even more interest.

When leaving the auditorium, Kevin excitedly patted his shoulder: ”The short film is already online, and the numbers are skyrocketing! Horizon’s social media account gained fifty thousand followers in one hour! The headquarters is thrilled and says they want to give you a special bonus!”

Alex smiled: ”Pleasure working with you.”

”It’s been a pleasure!” Kevin lowered his voice, ”And... did you see the reaction of the people in the audience? This is not the effect of an ordinary advertisement. You created something... more profound.”

On the way home, Alex opened his phone to check the data. Two hours after the short film went online, the total platform view count exceeded three million. Traffic to the Horizon Outdoors homepage was soaring, and the pre-sale page for the sub-brand already had thousands of people registered for interest.

In the system interface, his popularity was skyrocketing like a rocket. The efficiency boost from the 100-point Halo, combined with the multiplier effect of hit content, plus the extra attention brought by media exposure...

The numbers broke through one milestone after another.

He redeemed the next ability he had long planned: [Environmental Interaction Intuition (Primary)].

Description: Enhances subtle perception and prediction of the physical environment, enabling intuitive understanding of environmental factors such as spatial layout, object stability, and potentially dangerous areas. Redemption requires 40,000 Popularity points.

This would be of great help for Defensive Driving, outdoor shooting safety, and even potentially escaping conflicts. After the redemption was complete, he could more clearly predict the movements of other vehicles while driving, and instinctively notice uneven ground or potential falling objects overhead while walking.

This was a comprehensive upgrade in environmental awareness.

--- On Saturday morning, Alex arrived as promised at the closed training ground designated by Tom—an abandoned warehouse area, empty and deserted.

Tom was already there, with two cars parked next to him: Alex’s Honda Civic and a very ordinary-looking Toyota Camry.

”Use this one today.” Tom patted the Camry, ”It’s similar in performance to your car. Let’s start with the basics.”

The next three hours were driving training like nothing Alex had ever experienced before.

What Tom taught was not conventional driving, but ”survival driving” in the true sense:

· How to identify professional stalking through the rearview mirror (”Look at their following distance, frequency of lane changes, and whether they make the same pointless turns as you”)

· How to safely shake off a tail in city traffic (”Don’t speed, don’t break traffic rules, and use traffic lights and traffic flow to create natural separation”)

· How to find a breakthrough point when surrounded by multiple vehicles (”Pass next to large vehicles, utilizing the blind spots of buses or trucks”)

· Even how to create escape space with the car body in extreme situations (”It’s not crashing; it’s using the side of the car to gently push away obstacles”)

Alex learned quickly. Neural Reaction Enhancement and Dynamic Visual Enhancement made his driving reactions far superior to ordinary people, while Environmental Interaction Intuition gave him an almost instinctive grasp of vehicle dimensions, spatial distances, and road conditions.

”You’re fucking born to race cars.” Tom couldn’t help but say after the third practice, ”This learning speed... I’ve taught police, and none of them were this fast.”

Alex just smiled: ”Maybe I’m just more focused.”

When the training ended, Tom said seriously: ”Remember, these techniques are a last resort. The best defense is to avoid getting into situations where you need to use these techniques. Change your habits, increase your vigilance, but don’t live like a bird startled by the mere twang of a bowstring.”

”I understand,” Alex said. ”Thank you, Tom.”

”Don’t mention it.” Tom handed him a USB drive, ”This contains some tutorial videos on Defensive Driving for you to review yourself. And... if you really run into trouble, call anytime. A few friends and I can be there at any time.”

This was a promise, a promise heavier than any contract.

While driving home, Alex felt different. The car was the same, but the driver had been upgraded. He could simultaneously pay attention to vehicle dynamics in five directions—front, back, left, right, and center—could predict traffic light changes half a street away, and could plan three different routes in complex traffic.

This wasn’t driving; this was an environmental dance.

--- On Sunday night, Alex sat at his workbench, organizing the week’s progress.

The Horizon short film was a huge success, popularity skyrocketed, and he redeemed an important ability.

The medical school sharing session established the legitimacy of psychological support.

Driving training significantly improved mobility safety.

Established substantive security support with Tom.

The stalking in the shadows was still continuing, but the warning frequency of Crisis Prediction was decreasing—the other party might have realized he was on guard and had become more cautious.

At this moment, a new email notification popped up in his inbox.

Sender: Taylor Allison’s studio email.

Subject: Project Invitation (Official)

The content was concise:

”Alex, over the past few weeks, I have organized the ideas we discussed earlier and formed a preliminary project framework. Tentative title: genesis project: From Spark to Form》. Core concept: Tracking the complete process of a song, a painting, a story, or a dance from the initial ’spark of inspiration’ to its final form. Multimedia presentation: A mixture of music, visuals, text, and live performance. I invite you to be the co-creator for the visual part, to jointly explore the possibilities of ’visualizing inspiration.’ If you are interested, I suggest we begin the first phase of experimental work in Nashville next month. The schedule is flexible and can be arranged according to your availability. Attached is a more detailed project concept book. Looking forward to your reply. Taylor”

Alex opened the attachment. A twenty-page PDF detailed the project’s philosophical foundation, creative methods, and expected outcomes. This was not a business project proposal, but a true creative manifesto, filled with a passion for exploring the essence of creation.

After reading it, he leaned back in his chair.

It was time to make a choice.

Continue in Los Angeles, dealing with the threats in the shadows, and steadily developing his content career? Or fly to Nashville, dive into an uncertain art experiment, and explore the unknown with one of the top creators of this era?

He looked out the window. The night in Los Angeles, lights like a galaxy.

Then he opened the reply email and began to type:

”Taylor, I accept the invitation. The schedule next month can be arranged. Before then, I want to finish the Los Angeles chapter of city portraits》—as a personal warm-up before entering the project. Also, regarding the visual language of the project, I have some preliminary ideas, and I have attached sketches to this email. Looking forward to collaborating again. Alex”

Click send.

The email flew toward Nashville, toward a brand-new creative phase.

At the same time, his phone vibrated; it was a message from Detective Chen Zhiming: ”A former employee of Greystone Security is willing to provide information. He has something in his possession, records about certain ’overstepping operations.’ Do you want to hear it?”

Alex replied: ”Time? Location?”

”Tomorrow afternoon at three, my office. It’s safe.”

”I’ll be there.”

The puzzle pieces of the counterattack were coming together one by one.

And the stage for creation was unfolding toward a wider world.

Alex closed his computer and walked to the window.

The night was deep, but the lights in the distance, one by one, connected into a road.

He knew where he was going.
